Is Father's Day getting more respect? Depends on who you ask
Is Father's Day starting to get a little more attention as a holiday?
Not if you check some social media. In an expletive-filled post on TikTok and X, rapper Plies, best known for his collaborations with T-Pain and DJ Khaled on hits 'Shawty' and 'I'm So Hood,' complains about how Father's Day on Sunday carries about as much clout as Groundhog Day, saying it might as well be removed from the calendar.
' The disrespect to Father's Day is real ' declares a separate Reddit post, which adds, 'We get it, fathers aren't important to corporations, but damn, can't I at least get some free donuts or chicken strips?'
Perhaps Shake Shack's buy one Double ShackBurger get a second one free in stores and on its app through Monday doesn't count? Or Wendy's buy one get one free deal on premium sandwiches through its app on Sunday? Or Burger King's buy one get one free deals on Whoppers through the app?
It's true the offers aren't quite as broad as on Mother's Day.
But the spending disparity with Mother's Day may be narrowing, according to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. The organizations forecast that a record-breaking $24 billion will be spent on Father's Day this year, surpassing the previous mark of $22.9 billion in 2023. They say consumers plan to spend an average of $199.38 on their dads and father figures this year.
Of course, that still pales in comparison to this year's $259.04 average planned for moms, which totals about $34.1 billion, or $10.1 billion more than Father's Day spending. That is a 21% smaller gap than the $12.8 billion difference there was between Mother's Day and Father's Day spending in 2023.
Other studies disagree, though. RetailMeNot forecasts a $25 drop in spending for dads this year, down to about $232 per shopper, while moms get an average of $360 per shopper, up $43 this year.

(KTVT via CNN Newsource) Coppell, Texas — A North Texas mom devised a plan to prank nearly every dad in their parish by getting all of them to wear the same shirt to Mass on Father's Day. The Sunday surprise, featuring 200 dads, went viral, spreading both joy and laughter to millions. 'I had this, what I like to call 'a Holy Spirit idea' to do this shirt thing,' Kristen Combo told CBS News Texas. She said it all started as a simple idea to prank a group of dads on Father's Day at their church, Saint Ann's Catholic Parish in Coppell. 'So, then everybody started telling everybody and it just got bigger and bigger and bigger,' Combo explained. Combo got all the moms to buy the shirt from the same online Catholic store, Sock Religious, and present the polos as a sweet Father's Day gift. As it turned out, about 200 dads all showed up in the same bright blue attire. Combo posted it to her Instagram, and in less than 24 hours, the reel was viewed millions of times across the world. 'I think that people just want wholesome content and then also seeing men be really amazing fathers – it just brought joy,' Kristen said. Jake Coffman was one of the duped dads and said the stunt made his Father's Day even more special. 'I was like, 'I think we all have the same shirt. We just got pranked by our wives,'' Coffman said with a laugh. 'Being able just to see like everybody joyful and laughing and just kind of brought that little bit of joy that we needed for Father's Day.' Combo said God was in on the prank, laughing from heaven. After an acting career that stretched back more than 40 years, Willis' family announced he was retiring following his diagnosis with aphasia in March 2022 . The following year, his loved ones revealed that he was suffering from a type of dementia known as frontotemporal dementia. 'FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone,' the Die Hard star's family wrote in a statement on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration website at the time. Speaking at the Women's Alzheimer's Movement Forum last month, Emma recounted how the future the two of them had dreamed of together 'vanished' when her husband's diagnosis was confirmed. 'On the day Bruce got his diagnosis, we left the doctor's office with a pamphlet and a hollow goodbye. No plan, no guidance, no hope, just shock,' she said, according to PEOPLE . 'The future we imagined simply vanished, and I was left trying to hold my family together, raise our two young daughters, and care for the man I love while navigating a disease I barely understood.' Sunshine, music and food at annual Taste of Little Italy festival
Thousands of people took advantage of good weather and delicious food at the Taste of Little Italy festival in Toronto on Saturday. The street festival began Friday night and runs until 10 p.m. on Father's Day Sunday. The annual event closes College Street to traffic — including TTC service — between Bathurst and Shaw streets.
