Greenville mayor talks 10-story ‘Honor Tower' construction in Unity Park
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – Construction continues on a 10-story tower Greenville city leaders said will honor those who serve while bringing the community together.
Greenville mayor Knox White told 7NEWS he envisions the Honor Tower in Unity Park as a gathering place for ceremonies honoring veterans and first responders.
'After Hurricane Helene and everything else we've all been through, I think we understand even better than ever before how important our first responders are, and it's a great way to honor them,' White said.
White said the 10-story Thomas and Vivian Wong Honor Tower not only pays homage to men and women in uniform, but also highlights the unique history of the surrounding neighborhood.
'Unity Park has a very compelling story behind it. It was the site of a segregated park system, a black park and a white park,' White also said.
The base of the tower features a plaza city leaders said can hold 200 people. White added visitors will be able to walk or take an elevator to the 10th floor for a small fee.
'It'll be one of the iconic features of our city. Just like the Liberty Bridge, we used a world renown architect and designer for the honor tower, Paul Endres, he's done great work,' White explained.
White said the tower is a result of around $10 million in private and public partnerships. The aim is to boost appreciation for the communities and cultures that call Greenville home, according to White.
'It's really meant to be experienced on the outside as well as on top. A beautiful view on top, but it's a beautiful piece of art, and architecture that'll be a real crowning achievement for Unity Park,' White went on to say.
White said the Honor Tower will also include sound systems and be illuminated in the evenings. It is expected to open to the public this fall.

That total includes more than $12 million in rental assistance to more than 4,960 Georgia families, and housing arrangements—temporary and long-term—have been secured for nearly 365 displaced households. Federal aid has also extended to Georgia's public infrastructure. FEMA has authorized more than $629 million in Public Assistance to help communities with debris removal and emergency management costs. Clean Your White Sneakers So They Look Brand-New With These 7 Easy Steps
I'm known for being quite a sneakerhead and for wearing a colorful array of Adidas Gazelles and Nike Air Force 1 shoes. But that doesn't mean I don't also appreciate my trusty white sneakers. In fact, I wear my all-white Pumas almost every day. Why? Well, they're comfortable and supportive and they work with just about any outfit, making them my go-to travel shoes. In the past year alone, I've taken my white sneakers to bustling London, rainy Scotland, chilly San Francisco, peaceful Savannah, Georgia, and eight states in the southeast of the US. Although my shoes have gotten me around the world comfortably, my once pristine white kicks are now a gross dishwater gray. Although I'm one of those people who will wear sneakers until they're literally falling apart, sporting dirty white sneakers isn't always the bold fashion statement I want to make. Instead of throwing my shoes away and buying another $60 pair, I can clean them for much less so they look as close to brand new as possible. I can't permanently remove crease lines, but I can get rid of dirt, scuffs and other signs of wear and tear. Here are the steps I use to clean dirty white shoes and make them look new again. These items are probably all lying around your home: Water Bleach Three bowls Toothpaste (optional) Clean cloth or sponge White vinegar or baking soda Mild detergent or shoe cleaner Soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush Magic Eraser or a similar cleaning sponge How to clean your white shoes You can use several methods. Following these steps should help to refresh your white shoes and make them look new again. Step 1: Remove accessories and bleach laces Start by removing shoelaces and any inserts from the shoes. Set shoes aside because you'll start with bleaching laces. To prepare the solution, mix 1/4 cup of bleach per gallon of water in a large bowl. I recommend you use oxygen-based bleach, which is safe for white and colored laces. Place the laces in the bowl with the mixture and let sit for up to an hour. You can finish the following steps in the meantime. Step 2: Remove loose particles Back to the shoes. Use a dry soft-bristled brush or toothbrush to gently brush off any loose dirt or debris from the sides and bottom of the shoes. I recommend doing this step over a trash can for easy cleanup. Step 3: Spot clean exterior For tough stains, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water or baking soda and water in the other bowl. Either mixture works just as well and which one you pick really depends on what you have more readily available. Apply this solution to the outside of the shoes and gently scrub with a clean brush or cloth. Step 4: Wash the shoes Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water in another bowl. You could also use a store-bought shoe cleaner for this step. Dip a clean cloth or sponge in the solution and gently scrub the entire shoe surface, working from the top to the sides, then the bottom. Bonus tip for fabric shoes: If the shoes are still discolored, you can try using toothpaste on the fabric parts. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the stains, scrub gently with a brush and then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Step 5: Rinse and dry Use a clean, soft cloth to remove any mixture residue. Let the shoes air dry, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. While they dry, remove the laces from the bleach solution. Rinse the laces in cold water, then wash them by hand or in the washing machine. Step 6: Brighten the soles For rubber soles, you can use a Magic Eraser to brighten them up and remove any remaining scuffs. Step 7: Replace accessories Once the shoes and laces are completely dry, reinsert the clean shoelaces and any other accessories removed from the shoes. Voila. Now your shoes look new (or at least as close to new as possible). How often you should clean your white shoes The frequency with which you clean your shoes will depend on how often you wear them and the conditions in which they are worn, but here are some general guidelines to follow: Always wipe down your white shoes with a water-dampened cloth after wearing them in the rain or as soon as you notice any discoloration marks. Store your shoes inside in a dry place to prevent discoloration or molding. Do a light cleaning every two weeks or so. Deep clean every six weeks or so. All of these tips will ensure that stains don't set in over time, which can make cleaning them more difficult, and keep your shoes wearable for longer. Can you clean white shoes in a washing machine? Hand-washing shoes is usually the best practice but some white sneakers and shoes are safe in the washing machine. To check, find the care label usually located on the underside of the tongue. It should tell you if you can machine-wash or not. Shoes made of leather, suede, rubber and vinyl should never be put in the washing machine. Cotton, nylon and polyester shoes are normally safe in the machine, but if you're unsure, definitely err on the side of caution and hand-wash. Neighbor Calls Stay-at-Home Mom ‘Selfish' for Refusing to Watch Her Kids for Free
A woman is defending herself after being called 'selfish' for not wanting to babysit her neighbor's kids for free The other mom assumed she would watch her kids because she's a 'stay-at-home mom' The woman stood up for herself and declined to babysit the other mom's kids because she wanted to spend time with her own childA new mom took to the internet looking for advice after a neighbor asked if she would watch their kids every day without compensation. In a Reddit post, the woman explained that she's new to her area and has made friends through her local Mommy-and-Me group. The stay-at-home mom noted that she has only been in the group for "a little over a month," as her baby is only 9 weeks old. Recently, one of her neighbors asked if she could watch their 3-year-old and 5-year-old due to an "emergency." "She looked desperate so I agreed. I was like well its just once," the poster explained, noting that she enjoys having one-on-one time with her newborn. "That day I watched her children was hectic as hell, my daughter was fussy and they children were very rambunctious to say the least," she added. "I was happy when she came and got them 6 hours later." However, the neighbor then asked if she could watch both her kids "in the afternoons," to which she politely declined. "I told her no. I'm not a full-time babysitter and have no desire to take that much time away from my own child and navigating life with my child and husband," the poster explained. The neighbor responded by saying, 'Well, it's not like I'm asking a lot, it's just the afternoons.' When the new mom tried to explain that her husband works from home and that she is "not interested in taking on any other responsibilities," the neighbor told her she was being 'selfish.' "I told her she was entitled to think that I SHOULD help her just because I'm at home with my little one," the new mom replied. In an update to the post, she revealed the neighbor later went onto the Mommy-and-Me group "to disparage" her, once again saying she was "selfish." Thankfully, other moms came to the poster's rescue, asking the neighbor why she thought it was okay to force childcare onto another mom. "Then another mom confessed and reminded her in the group chat that she tried that with her and was told that the SAHM moms in the group are not her babysitters and she needs to make arrangements for childcare independent of the group," the poster wrote. "She attempted to double down, then the moderator/ creator of the group told her it would [sic] might be best if she found another mom group to socialize with. Then she back-tracked and apologized."
