Catford man sentenced to indefinite hospital order for 'unprovoked' fatal stabbing
A man from Catford has been sentenced to an indefinite term in a secure hospital after fatally stabbing a man in an 'unprovoked attack' outside the victim's home.
Caudel Haughton, 21, of Conisborough Crescent, Catford, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday, February 7, for the manslaughter of 20-year-old Filipe Oliveira by diminished responsibility.
The attack took place on April 15, 2023, outside Filipe's home in Norwood Road.
Haughton approached him on his doorstep and stabbed him five times with a flick knife before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6pm, where officers administered CPR.
Filipe died later that evening.
Investigators built a case using CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and anonymous tip-offs via Crimestoppers.
Detectives were able to track Haughton's movements from his home in Catford to the scene of the attack, mapping his journey on foot, by bus, and across two train services over the course of 90 minutes.
Five days after the killing, firearms officers from British Transport Police arrested Haughton at Waterloo Station on Tuesday, April 21, as part of a joint manhunt operation involving the Met Police, Dorset Police, and British Transport Police.
It later emerged that Haughton had bragged about the killing in the aftermath of the attack.
He has now been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order, where he will remain under secure conditions for as long as deemed necessary.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: 'My thoughts today are with Filipe's family and friends, who have had to wait almost two years for justice.
'This was an unprovoked attack, which saw Filipe fatally stabbed outside his own home.
'Our investigation utilised extensive CCTV evidence and witness testimonies.
'Haughton will be detained indefinitely in hospital – and may spend the rest of his life there, meaning he will no longer be a risk to the public.'

Cops identify victim in deadly east-end stabbing
The victim of Toronto's 16th homicide has been identified as Ashkan Pournasir-Roudbane, 36, of Toronto. Cops investigated a stabbing call in the area of Danforth and Hillingdon Aves. — east of Coxwell Ave. — on Tuesday around 11 p.m. Police said an altercation occurred between two males behind a plaza and they located the victim.
