On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees began a three-game weekend series at Dodger Stadium, and it has been billed as a rematch of last fall's World Series.

The Dodgers bludgeoned the Yankees last year to win the world championship, and while the series was initially expected to be a classic and be very competitive, Los Angeles prevailed in just five games.
Friday's game was a historic one, as reigning league MVPs Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge each hit home runs in the first inning. It was the first time in Major League Baseball history that the reigning MVPs from both leagues homered in the first inning of the same game.
Judge struck first in the top of that inning with a dinger into center field that opened up the scoring.
Judge won his second American League MVP in three years last season with 144 RBIs and 58 home runs, both of which led all of MLB.

Ohtani, meanwhile, had a National League-high 130 RBIs and 54 homers, and he became the first player in MLB history to have at least 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in the same season. He came into Friday with 20 home runs this season, which was more than anyone else in the majors.
New York came into this game in first place in the AL East with a sizable cushion over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are also in first place in their division, but they're trying to hold off the San Diego Padres, who are just 1.5 games behind in second place.

Giants reliever Sean Hjelle accused of abuse by wife, MLB investigating

San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle, foreground, reacts after a home run by Boston Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela, bottom, during the sixth inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Friday, June 20, 2025. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu) San Francisco Giants reliever Sean Hjelle has been accused of abuse by his wife, and MLB is now investigating the allegations, according to a statement the Giants put out Saturday. According to The Mercury News, Hjelle said Saturday that he doesn't have an official comment at the moment but that he'll eventually make a statement after speaking with his agent and lawyer. Advertisement Hjelle's wife, Caroline Hjelle, posted a TikTok on Friday of her with the couple's two children. The video's caption read, "When my MLB husband abandons us on Mother's Day a week after this [video was taken] once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I've been raising two boys alone." The Giants said in their statement Saturday that they are 'aware of these serious allegations' and have been in contact with MLB, which is looking into the situation. 'Obviously we're aware of it,' Giants manager Bob Melvin said before the Giants' 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox Saturday, via The Associated Press. 'He told me about it last night. We talked to MLB. At this point, it's in their jurisdiction right now so I really can't comment on it further." Advertisement Melvin also said before the game Saturday that Hjelle would be available to pitch. He didn't make an appearance, however. Hjelle, a 28-year-old righty, made his debut with the Giants in 2022. The organization drafted him in the second round in 2018. This season, Hjelle is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in six outings, the most recent of which took place Friday night in a 7-5 loss to the Red Sox. Hjelle was responsible for the defeat after allowing a tie-breaking home run to center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela in the sixth inning.

Devers homers against his former team as Giants beat Red Sox 3-2

Rafael Devers hit his first home run for San Francisco against his former team on Saturday, and the Giants beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 just six days after the big trade between the teams. Devers was acquired from Boston on Sunday. He delivered his first long ball for the Giants in the third inning on Saturday after he went hitless in his first six at-bats in the series. Devers sent an opposite-field drive off Brayan Bello (3-2) over the left-field fence for a two-run shot that happened to be caught by a fan in a Red Sox T-shirt. Devers got loud cheers from the big crowd in San Francisco as he rounded the bases for his 216th career home run that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Devers was traded by Boston less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension that he signed in 2023. Heliot Ramos also homered for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Landen Roupp (5-5) bounced back from a rough start last Saturday against the Dodgers, throwing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Camilo Doval allowed two runs in the ninth before getting his 12th save in 15 chances. Boston had won seven of the last eight games. Key moment Boston scored twice in the ninth against Doval and had the tying run on second base with one out. But Doval got Marcelo Mayer and pinch-hitter Romy Gonzalez on groundouts to end the game. Key stat Devers became the 10th player to homer for and against the same team in a seven-day span, according to Sportradar. The last player to do it was Abraham Toro, who homered for Houston against Seattle on July 26, 2021, and then for the Mariners against the Astros the next day. Up next RHP Luis Giolito (3-1, 3.74 ERA) will start for Boston against LHP Robbie Ray (8-2, 2.68 ERA).
