Aaron Judge looks like Superman again as he busts out of his Yankees slump

It was Aaron Judge's first home run in a week, and it came amid a three-hit resurgence — on his Superman bobblehead night — despite the Yankees falling 5-3 to the Orioles at the Stadium. Judge again showed signs of snapping what had been a 3-for-27 skid with three hits and an intentional walk — including his 27th home run of the season — in his first four plate appearances before striking out in the ninth. 'I liked his at-bats tonight,' Aaron Boone said after the game. 'I thought he made a little adjustment with his hands. 'Sometimes you are just a little late, get into a spot and get into that really strong position to where now you're getting your good swing off, where you're through the zone a lot. So it looked to me like a little adjustment with his hands. And I thought he put a lot of good swings tonight.' No. 99 always has served as kryptonite for the Orioles. His 48 homers in 111 career games against Baltimore represent the most by any MLB player against any opponent since Judge's 2016 debut. 'I'm making adjustments every day. There's so many that I can't really narrow one,' said Judge, who claimed he still hadn't seen the Superman bobblehead. 'They have a great pitching staff, so it's about being ready, especially in that at-bat. I took a couple of heaters that I could've done some damage on. … So I was really trying to lock it in and trying to make something happen there.' It marked the first time Judge has gone deep since his ninth-inning blast against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet last Friday at Fenway Park. 'He runs it up to 100 miles an hour with that splitter combo. It's not a fun at-bat, but that's who you want to face when the game's on the line. You want to go up against the best…. He got us tonight, but I think we'll definitely see him again [this weekend].'

After moving back to his original position, the Yankees star is among the top right fielders in the American League nearly halfway through the 2025 season, setting him up for a shot to win the first Gold Glove of his illustrious big league career. Through Wednesday's play, Judge led all American League right fielders with at least 200 innings played at the position with a plus-4 Fielding Run Value, according to MLB's Statcast, suggesting he's much more comfortable manning the green grass in front of the Bleacher Creatures. In the top of the fifth inning of a scoreless game, Logan O'Hoppe hit a slicing fly ball to the right field corner of Yankee Stadium. Like a wide receiver on a fade route, Judge sprinted toward the foul pole, covering 100 feet of outfield grass to make the running catch just in front of the right field wall. The play was Judge's first 'five-star' catch since 2021, per Statcast, and had a catch probability of just 20 percent. He's also in the Gold Glove conversation thanks to one of the best outfield arms in the league. Judge has prevented two extra runs from baserunners, which is the third-most among all AL outfielders, behind only the Guardians' Steven Kwan and Nolan Jones. In 105 games in center in 2024, Judge had minus-6 OAA — and that doesn't capture his catastrophic center field gaffe in the fifth inning of Game 5 of the World Series in October. AP After finishing with minus-11 OAA in 2024, the seventh-worst in baseball, the Yankees outfield is now solidly above average at plus-2 OAA. Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, two more natural center fielders, have slid into the position nicely, combining for plus-4 OAA. If Judge keeps his current pace, he'll have his best shot at a Gold Glove since the late 2010s, when he was a two-time finalist (2017 and 2018), when the slick-fielding Royals right fielder Alex Gordon beat him out in back-to-back seasons. With a Hall of Fame-worthy resume already, Judge's defense has him on the cusp of adding yet another accolade.

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani are the leading vote-getters in the first round of MLB All-Star Game voting released on Monday. Judge has received 1,568,527 votes thus far through Phase 1 of voting, according to MLB. If that lead holds, he would be the first player to finish as the top All-Star vote-getter since Alex Rodriguez in 2007-08. Ohtani has 1,398,771 votes and could certainly overtake Judge between now and when this phase of voting concludes on June 26.
