Club World Cup set to decide future of six Real Madrid stars under Xabi Alonso

According to a recent report from SPORT, several Real Madrid players are facing uncertain futures as incoming manager Xabi Alonso prepares to take charge of his first matches.
With no major silverware to show for the season, Real Madrid are now focusing on the upcoming Club World Cup, a rare opportunity to end a disappointing campaign with a trophy, and more importantly, a critical proving ground for fringe players.

This new edition of the Club World Cup will serve as a litmus test for several members of the current squad.
While certain names like Jesus Vallejo and Lucas Vazquez are expected to depart regardless of performance, others still have a chance to convince Alonso they deserve to stay.
Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos, Endrick, David Alaba, Rodrygo, and Fran Garcia are all players whose futures are not yet secure.

Alaba's situation is particularly delicate. The recovery of Eder Militao and Antonio Rüdiger, combined with the likely integration of young defender Dean Huijsen, means Alaba could start the season as Real Madrid's fourth-choice centre-back.

To add to the challenge, Alonso is said to be keen on giving youth academy talent Joan Martinez a shot in the first team.
On the left flank, Garcia is under equally intense scrutiny. With Ferland Mendy recovering from injury and Alvaro Carreras heavily linked with a return to Madrid, the left-back position is facing an overload.
Garcia will be the only natural left-back available for the Club World Cup and is expected to use the tournament as a final audition. If he fails to impress, he could be the one sacrificed when Mendy regains fitness and Carreras potentially arrives.
Rodrygo and Endrick face different paths

Rodrygo's case is more complex. While the Brazilian has contributed in flashes, the arrival of Kylian Mbappe and the rise of Arda Guler may limit his minutes. If Madrid decide to cash in, Rodrygo's exit would come in the form of a permanent transfer, not a loan.

Endrick, on the other hand, is still seen as one for the future. While there is excitement about his potential, the plan may involve loaning him out to gain consistent playing time, especially if the attacking positions are crowded.
Lastly, in midfield, Ceballos and Modric are also entering uncertain territory. The Croatian's time at Madrid may be drawing to a close unless he can prove to Alonso that he still has the legs and vision to contribute at the highest level.
Meanwhile, Ceballos has struggled to consistently break into the starting XI and could be seen as expendable unless he shines at the Club World Cup.

Pep Guardiola reaction — Man City boss praises Ait-Nouri, Echeverri, Gundogan

Manchester City clobbered UAE side Al Ain at the Club World Cup on Sunday, scoring three goals in each half to seal passage to the knockout rounds via a 6-0 win. RECAP — Man City 6-0 Al Ain City will try to beat Juventus on Thursday to win Group G, but Guardiola's started 22 different players over two games including several new faces and he'll consider this tournament a success outside of the additional minutes it's asked of his squad. Advertisement Ilkay Gundogan scored twice in the win, while Claudio Echeverri spun home a wonderful free kick and Rayan Ait-Nouri was terrific at left back. No, the opposition was not Premier League level. Yes, City looked very sharp. Pep Guardiola reaction on Ait-Nouri, Echeverri, Gundogan Here's Pep on ex-Wolves man Ait-Nouri, via Manchester Evening News: "We knew it. A talent, within the final third a lot of talent. Defensively, he can play outside, he can play inside, and in the final third he's so clever. Really good." On Gundogan: "Gundo's an exceptional player! Exceptional in all senses. He's really, really good and made a fantastic goal, he reads what we have to do every game. I'm really pleased." On Echeverri: "[Exiting at halftime] was a pity. It was a problem at half-time. ... I want to tell you a secret. Last season, when he arrived, after every training session he practiced free kicks alone. So work pays off. If he scored a goal, it's because he practiced. When other guys don't practice, they don't score."

Competition should stiffen for unproven Americans in CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Matt Freese's gaffe that cost the U.S. the lead in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group play finale drew a reaction from coach Mauricio Pochettino that Americans can apply to the rest of their last competitive test before next year's World Cup. 'Move on,' Pochettino said of the goalkeeper's botched clearing attempt before Patrick Agyemang's tiebreaking 75th-minute goal in a 2-1 victory over Haiti on Sunday night. 'Remember, the most important action is the next one,' Pochettino said. 'If you think in the last one like that, you're going to do another mistake. This type of accident happened, and it will happen it the future.' The immediate future for the U.S. after a 3-0 run through Group D is a quarterfinal against Costa Rica or Mexico next weekend. Either way, the opponent will be ranked higher than any of th group opponents. The U.S. ended a four-match losing streak by beating No. 100 Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in its Gold Cup opener, followed by a 1-0 victory over 58th-ranked Saudi Arabia . Haiti is No. 83. 'The confidence level is super high,' said Brenden Aaronson, who assisted on Malik Tillman's goal that opened the scoring in the 10th minute. 'I mean, nine points from three games. We've had two shutouts and another win today against a good Haiti team. I think we're really flying at the moment. Now we have a week to prepare, which we haven't had for any team.' Still, the play has been uneven from what amounts to a B team of mostly young and unproven players and A team backups. Several of the usual stars and starters sat out for personal reasons, injuries or playing in the Club World Cup. Missing the tournament for the U.S. are regulars Christian Pulisic , Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest . 'We were not a clinic with the chances that we had,' Pochettino said of the Haiti win. 'I think we should have scored more.' Freese blundered when took a back pass from Tim Ream and tried to play the ball to John Tolkin with his left foot. The ball went straight to Louicius Don Deedson, who took a touch and scored inside the far post for a 1-1 tie in the 19th minute. The unsightly moment did nothing to dissuade Pochettino, who suggested his decision to go with Freese over Matt Turner will continue in this Gold Cup. The coach thought Freese followed orders by moving on. 'Continues to build me up,' Freese said of Pochettino. 'That's something I really appreciate. Very grateful for the opportunity. I just want to help the team win as much as I can.' The U.S. won its group for the 17th time in 18 Gold Cups. The Americans have 43 wins, one loss and five draws in group play, going 3-0 for the seventh time. Still, a four-match losing streak punctuated by a Switzerland's 4-0 blowout in the final Gold Cup tune-up is a not-very-distant memory. 'To be the best, you've got to beat the best,' Freese said. 'I think always continuing to push ourselves and play against harder teams and show what we can do and learn from it and continue to grow as a group ahead of a big summer next summer is an opportunity we're all looking forward to. We want to continue to move on.' ___ AP soccer:

Gündogan has two goals, Haaland scores as Man City routs Al Ain 6-0 at the Club World Cup

Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Ilkay Gundogan had a pair of goals, Erling Haaland scored on a penalty and Manchester City locked up its spot in the knockout round of the Club World Cup with a 6-0 rout of Al Ain on Sunday night. Claudio Echeverri, Oscar Bobb and Rayan Cherki also scored for City, which is trying to put an encouraging capper on a disappointing season. The English powerhouse finished third in the Premier League after four straight championships and went down to Real Madrid in the knockout playoff of the UEFA Champions League. With an entirely new lineup after a 2-0 win over Morocco's Wydad in the opening group game, Man City produced a dominating performance in Atlanta against an overmatched club from the United Arab Emirates. The time of possession was a staggering 74% in favor of the English side, which outshot Al Ain 21-5. Haaland buried the penalty for his 32nd goal of the season across all competitions after a video review found that Rami Rabia took down City's Manuel Akanji in the area on a corner kick. Cherki, one of City's high-profile signings, scored his first goal for his new club in the waning minutes. The expected result sent Man City and Italian club Juventus (both 2-0-0) to the Round of 16 from Group G. Al Ain has been blown out twice, losing 5-0 to Juventus in its opener. Manchester City is the reigning club champion, winning the title in 2023 under the former seven-team format. Key moment After Gündogan flicked in an early goal over the head of keeper Khalid Eisa, Echeverri assured this would be an easy night for City in the 27th minute. With a free kick from just outside the area, he curled a shot over the wall that left Eisa frozen on one knee while the ball ripped the back of the net. Takeaways Man City will face Juventus on Thursday in Orlando to determine which team claims the top spot in the group. Then the real work begins for both clubs. ___ AP soccer:
