MACC seizes RM85.6mil in assets in highway funds probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized and frozen assets and bank accounts worth an estimated RM85.6mil as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project.
The probe centres on a concessionaire with a "Tan Sri" title suspected of diverting the project's funds for personal use.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said seizures include 14 individual bank accounts with RM4.5mill and eight company accounts with RM33mil.
Also confiscated were luxury vehicles (RM7.65mil), designer handbags (RM3mil), jewellery (RM6mil), high-end watches (RM7mil) and properties valued at RM24.5mil.
"We believe hundreds of millions in sukuk funds were channelled to the contractor's company owned by the Tan Sri and later misused for personal interests rather than the intended highway project," Azam said.
The funds were allegedly transferred to multiple entities, including proxy companies and the personal account of the Tan Sri's wife, and used to acquire assets such as real estate, luxury vehicles and goods and to fund gambling activities.
Azam added that the money could also have been used to finance local and overseas property purchases and investments, which were concealed through layered transactions designed to obscure their origin.
As of now, investigators have not yet recorded a statement from the Tan Sri as he is in hospital.
"We are reviewing the acquisition trail of these assets and obtaining relevant bank documents, including those tied to the suspect, to support our analysis," he said.
To date, 45 individuals have had their statements recorded, with another 30 to 50 witnesses expected to be called in. Family members of the Tan Sri may also be summoned.
Earlier reports noted that MACC had seized various luxury items, including handbags, jewellery, watches, vehicles, cash, and high-end residences, worth around RM32mil, believed to be linked to the same individual.
During a Thursday operation, officers also discovered a storage room stocked with luxury alcoholic beverages valued at about RM3mil, suspected to be tied to money laundering activities.
All assets were seized under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 for further investigation. – Bernama

Police On Manhunt For Three Suspects In Teluk Intan Armed Robbery

IPOH, June 21 (Bernama) -- Police have mounted a manhunt for three male suspects involved in an armed robbery at an entertainment outlet along Jalan Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan, on June 15. Hilir Perak police chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said one of the suspects has been identified as a 37-year-old local man with a prior criminal record. 'This suspect has also been placed on the wanted list, and efforts to track down all three individuals are being intensified,' he said in a statement today. He added that the Forensic Unit from the Perak contingent police headquarters (IPK) visited the scene and collected several pieces of evidence, including bloodstains, two fingerprints, broken glass fragments, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. Earlier, a 30-second video went viral on social media, showing three masked men exiting a Honda car and brandishing machetes at individuals at an entertainment outlet. Bakri said a police report on the incident was lodged at 1.02 am on June 15 at the Hilir Perak district police headquarters by a 42-year-old security guard employed at the premises. He said that the three suspects had stormed into the premises, damaged property, and fled with an iPhone 14 Pro belonging to an employee, along with RM2,000 in cash taken from the counter. He added that the suspects also injured two customers with the machetes and smashed the windows of four vehicles parked near the premises. Police have opened an investigation paper under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief involving damage to public property.

Police nab man who drove off with special needs girl in Penaga

KEPALA BATAS: Police have arrested a man who fled in a vehicle with a 12-year-old special needs girl in Penaga on Friday (June 20). Seberang Perai Utara OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred around 5.30pm when the girl's mother had gone to her husband's workshop to deliver engine oil, leaving her daughter in the car with the engine still running. "However, when the woman, who is in her 40s, returned to the vehicle, she discovered that both the car and her daughter were missing. She then used a location tracking app to locate her phone, which was with her daughter, and found it was in the Bagan Lalang area of Butterworth," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). He added that based on this information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Seberang Perai Utara district police headquarters, together with personnel from the Butterworth police station, managed to arrest a suspect and recover both the victim and the vehicle. He said checks revealed that the suspect, who is in his 60s, has a criminal record with seven cases and 11 drug-related cases. "The victim is in good condition and did not sustain any injuries. She was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital for a medical examination," he added. Anuar said that further investigations are ongoing. The case is being investigated under Sections 379A and 363 of the Penal Code.
