Stockholm Diamond League: Adeleke sixth in 400m, hometown hero Duplantis sets new pole vault record

RHASIDAT ADELEKE SETTLED for sixth place in the women's 400m at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting on Sunday evening.
Adeleke crossed in 50.48 to take sixth in what was just her second race 400m outdoor race of the season. She began the season in Oslo on Thursday, where she was 0.06 seconds quicker than today.
The race was won by American Isabella Whittaker in a very fast 49.78, just eight hundredths of a second off the meeting record, which was set by Allyson Felix in 2007. It marks back-to-back wins for Whittaker, who was fastest at the Oslo meet on Thursday.
Norway's Henriette Jaeger was second in 50.07, with Britain's Amber Anning running a season's best of 50.17 for third place.

Lieke Klaver of Netherlands was fourth with Chile's Martina Weil in fifth.
Elsewhere, Swedish double Olympic pole vault champion Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his existing world record by a centimetre on Sunday as he cleared 6.28 metres at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting.
With victory already guaranteed, Duplantis broke the world record for the 12th time as he soared over the bar at the first attempt to improve on his 6.27m effort in February.

Should he triumph, Fleetwood's victory would be well-received since he currently holds the most top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without securing a title. The elusive victory came into view on a peculiar day when overnight leaders Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas fell behind, despite Fleetwood's total of 41 - seven more than the second man, Brett Quigley, on that list. World number one Scheffler had a rough start with a triple bogey seven at the first hole and seemed off his game for most of the day. Scheffler ended up with a double bogey at the eighth and further losses at the fourth and 16th, finishing with a 72, nine shots behind Fleetwood at nine under par. Thomas completed the round in 73, his scorecard marred by a quadruple bogey nine at the 13th, leaving him 10 shots adrift at six under. American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley surged into contention with a 63, joining Henley, who shot 61, on 13 under par. Jason Day is two shots further back. Rory McIlroy inside top ten as Tommy Fleetwood leads Travelers

Rory McIlroy remains inside the top ten, however, he sits nine shots off the lead ahead of the final day at the Travelers Championship. McIlroy actually moved up the leaderboard following his third round 68, now into a share of eighth place, but is unlikely to challenge for the title on Sunday as Tommy Fleetwood heads the field on 16-under-par. The five-time major winner enjoyed the perfect start on Saturday as he played a flawless front nine in four under par following birdies on the second, fourth, sixth and eighth holes, however, his round began to unravel on the 12th hole as he made double bogey. McIlroy got one shot back on the 15th but handed it right back on the following hole before finishing with a couple of pars to sign for a two-under round and sit on seven under for the tournament. Shane Lowry also moved up the leaderboard, following an impressive four-under 66 to end the day on one-over-par. Five birdies and just the solitary bogey for the former Open champion who ended the day in a share of 51st place. Fleetwood, who is still searching for his maiden PGA Tour victory, put himself in prime position for Sunday's final round by posting a seven-under 63 to lead by three shots from American duo Russell Henley and Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

Gavin Tiernan beaten in epic Amateur Championship final

LOUTH'S GAVIN TIERNAN was beaten in a thrilling 36-hole battle with America's Ethan Fang in the Amateur Championship final at Royal St George's. Tiernan was an unexpected finalist, ranked outside the 1000 male amateur golfers in the world, at 1340th. Advertisement But the 19-year-old more than held his own against the world number seven. Tiernan found himself one-up after 18 holes, having never trailed in the opening round, before Fang fought back to take a two-up lead as Tiernan registered bogeys across three of his first five holes. Yet Tiernan battled back and excellent putts on the 16th and 17th put the pair level again moving toward the 36th hole. A superb approach shot from Fang then set up the American to birdie the hole and claim the title. Fang's reward includes an invitation to play at next month's Open in Royal Portrush, along with the 2026 Master and US Open.
