McIlroy chasing big prize money despite slipping down Travelers leaderboard

Rory McIlroy remains on course to take home a big chunk of prize money despite slipping down the leaderboard at the Travelers Championship.
The world number two is nine shots off leader Tommy Fleetwood in a tie for eighth at TPC River Highlands after a two-under par 68 on Saturday. However, with the top 11 pocketing $500,000 or more, McIlroy could earn another big cheque even if he doesn't reel in the leaders.
Fleetwood surged ahead with a three-stroke lead at the Travelers Championship, igniting hopes for his first-ever PGA Tour win.
The Brit delivered an impeccable round of 63, complete with five birdies and an eagle on the 13th, catapulting him to 16 under par. This places him ahead of American duo Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley as they gear up for Sunday's finale at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.
This dynamic performance marks Fleetwood's best PGA Tour round this year – surpassing his 65 at last month's Truist Championship in Philadelphia by two strokes and coming tantalisingly close to beating his personal best ever.
Speaking to CBS Sports, Fleetwood acknowledged the multiple factors that winning hinges on and said, "It (winning) will come down to a bunch of things.
"I haven't been in contention much at all this year, I've been on the outskirts if you like.
"My best finishes have been just outside of being in contention, but like really close. So to put myself there and be in the last group (on Sunday), I'm really happy with that.
"I've been here plenty of times, I'm looking forward to it. I'm happy with the work I've done and happy I've bounced back for the first few days of this tournament from last week (US Open).
"It's just an amazing opportunity for me to go out and enjoy it, and hopefully it's our time."
Should he triumph, Fleetwood's victory would be well-received since he currently holds the most top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without securing a title.
The elusive victory came into view on a peculiar day when overnight leaders Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas fell behind, despite Fleetwood's total of 41 - seven more than the second man, Brett Quigley, on that list.
World number one Scheffler had a rough start with a triple bogey seven at the first hole and seemed off his game for most of the day.
Scheffler ended up with a double bogey at the eighth and further losses at the fourth and 16th, finishing with a 72, nine shots behind Fleetwood at nine under par.
Thomas completed the round in 73, his scorecard marred by a quadruple bogey nine at the 13th, leaving him 10 shots adrift at six under.
American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley surged into contention with a 63, joining Henley, who shot 61, on 13 under par. Jason Day is two shots further back.
Rory McIlroy made a strong start, covering the outward nine in 31 to move to nine under par and secure a high position on the leaderboard.
However, the Masters champion stumbled with a six at the par-four 12th, and although he managed a birdie at the 15th, it was quickly negated by a dropped shot at the next hole.

Tommy Fleetwood eyes end to PGA Tour drought at Travelers Championship

While he's won seven times on the DP World Tour, the Englishman (34) is seeking his first PGA Tour win in his 159th start. After racking up 41 top-10 finishes and winning $29.3 million on the US circuit — the most of any player without a win on the tour since 1983 — he has a chance to end the drought today after he shot a bogey-free, seven-under 63 to lead by three shots from Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley on 16-under. 'I'm on top of a lot of stat lines for people that haven't won on the PGA Tour, so to always to be a No. 1 at something is always nice,' Fleetwood joked at TPC River Highlands. 'Yeah, of course, I would love to win on the PGA Tour. I think it's an element of your career that everybody wants, and I, of course, want it. 'I've given myself like a back-end chance a couple of times this year, but I've not been in contention. 'This is my first real chance, so I'm really excited about that and looking forward to it. 'Again, it's easy to put pressure on yourself, and the longer things go on, the more people talk about it, of course they do. 'But there are also things that I'm very proud about as well, like my consistency, where I stand FedEx Cups and World Rankings and things like that. So there's a lot to be happy about. 'But of course, I'm not going to be silly and say I don't care about it. Of course, I want to win, and hopefully, it will happen sooner rather than later.' Approaching storms mean that tee times have been adjusted, and Fleetwood will tee off at 5:56pm Irish time with Henley and local favourite Bradley, who shot respective rounds of 61 and 63 yesterday. Tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler goes into the final round nine shots behind after he made a triple bogey at the first on his 29th birthday and a double bogey on the eighth en route to a 72. He's in a six-way tie for eighth that includes Rory McIlroy, who birdied four of his first eight holes to surge into contention before he double-bogeyed the 12th and signed for a 68. Shane Lowry showed signs of life following his US Open disappointment as he bounced back from rounds of 72 and 73 with a five-birdie 66 that moved him up to joint 51st on one-over.

K2 Promotions chief Krassyuk confirmed the pair's split in an emotional Instgram post. It read: "It's been a tremendous journey -- 12 years of unbelievable success. But the official controversially urged the unified champ to take more time to recover after the fan favourite said he was ready to fight. Tommy Fleetwood leads by three to boost maiden PGA Tour win hopes in Connecticut

Tommy Fleetwood opened up a three-shot lead at the Travelers Championship to raise hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory. The Englishman fired a flawless 63, including five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 13th, to reach 16 under par, three clear of American pair Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley going into Sunday's final round at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. It was Fleetwood's lowest round on the PGA Tour this year – two shots better than his 65 on the final day of the Truist Championship in Philadelphia last month – and just one stroke away from his best ever. I've been here plenty of times, I'm looking forward to it Fleetwood would be a popular winner as the 34-year-old had the most top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without a win. That number totals 41 – seven more than the second man, Brett Quigley, on that list – but the elusive victory hovered into sight on a curious day when overnight leaders Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas went backwards. World number one Scheffler made a triple bogey seven at the first hole and was strangely out of sorts for most of the day. Scheffler signed for a double bogey at the eighth and dropped more shots at the fourth and 16th saw him finish with a 72, nine shots adrift of Fleetwood at nine under par. Thomas went round in 73 with his card wrecked by a quadruple bogey nine at the 13th as he sat 10 shots back at six under. American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley roared into contention with a 63 to join Henley, who shot 61, on 13 under par. Jason Day is two shots further back. McIlroy starts the final day tied for eighth among a group which includes Scheffler.
