Kim Cattrall Turned Down ‘Sex And The City' 4 Times Until 1 Thought Changed Her Mind
In a city of millions of stories, one of the boldest ones almost didn't get told — because Kim Cattrall nearly said no to her role in 'Sex and the City.'
Cattrall portrayed Samantha Jones — the sex-positive, PR powerhouse with a Rolodex of lovers and even quicker wit — in the hit TV series 'Sex and the City' and its cinematic spin-offs. But this force of nature almost never made it to our screens. While chatting with The Times of London on June 12, Cattrall revealed she initially passed on the part 'four times,' citing what she called 'self-inflicted ageism.'
But she said that shifted when '40 became sexy.'
'[Samantha] wasn't a nymphomaniac — well, some people might have thought she was — but she was just enjoying the main course,' she added. 'Everyone else was nibbling on the appetizers when she was going for the steak. And it was always on her terms — that I always insisted on.'
But in her real life? Cattrall told the Times that she saw a lot of herself in her character.
'I'm the antithesis of her [Samantha] in many ways,' she said. 'I'm a serial monogamist, and then some.'
When HBO Max revived the series in 2021 with 'And Just Like That…,' Cattrall stood firm as the lone original lead who didn't return full-time, though she did offer fans a fleeting cameo in the Season 2 finale. Her absence was felt, but her stance was clear, as she told 'Today' in 2023, 'This is as far as I'm going to go.'

My favorite Max medical drama with 95% on Rotten Tomatoes is getting a second season – and my heart is racing over a 2026 release window for The Pitt season 2

The Pitt is my very favorite show of 2025, and HBO has confirmed that production has now started on season 2 of the hit medical drama. The HBO Max Original has been a huge success, gaining a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and sitting comfortably in Max's top three most-watched streaming shows worldwide. The press release hasn't shared any more information, but a few days ago it was revealed that the second season would stream in January 2026 and would bring a host of new faces into the ER – including Skinny Pete from Breaking Bad, aka the actor Charles Baker. Baker will be joined by Irene Choie, Laëtitia Hollard, and Lucas Iverson. As Hello magazine reports, Baker will be playing an unhoused man called Troy; Iren Choie will be Joy, a medical student "with strong boundaries"; Laëtitia Hollard plays a recent nursing school graduate; and Lucas Iverson will play James, a fourth year medical student. Noah Wyle, the man with the saddest eyes on any streamer, will of course return as Dr Robbie, and he previously told Deadline that the second season will take place over the Fourth of July weekend. Dr King, Dr Abbot, Dr Langdon and charge nurse Dana Evans are confirmed to be returning too. I genuinely loved every episode of season 1 of one of the best Max shows, and cried quite a lot in every single one of them: it's a show with a huge heart and the cast are exceptional. In a time when there are many horrible things happening it reminds me of Fred Rogers' famous line: "look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." She then tweeted a photo of them defiantly walking together, captioned with the state slogan 'Excelsior' — Latin for 'ever upward.' In Hochul-ese, it translates to 'empty political posturing.' After his publicity stunt, Lander was greeted like a conquering hero by lefty loonies including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and absentee Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, who posted a photo of himself hugging the candidate and touting his 'courage.' Do these people know that we can't even buy toothpaste in this city without buzzing a worker to unlock it? But hey, they got their photo op. 6 As he was facing questions about his use of the phrase 'Globalize the Intifada,' mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani cried while telling reporters about the Islamophobia he's faced. Bernadette Hogan/NY1 Our pols are severely misguided. They regularly pledge to fight against Trump rather than fighting for everyday New Yorkers to have order and an affordable city. The rotten cherry on top was Mamdani — a political novice but a seasoned performer. He tried to blunt a blossoming new antisemitic scandal, fueled by his use of the phrase 'globalize the intifada' … by pivoting into his own victimhood. 'I get messages that say the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. I get threats on my life,' he said, choking back tears. Even the mere threat of political violence is an abomination, full stop. Just ask Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who had his house burned in an attack police said was driven by antisemitism. Or the families of the young couple killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum in DC, allegedly by a man who said, 'I did it for Gaza.' But if Mamdani is going to cry every time he hears or sees some nasty words, perhaps being mayor of New York — which requires a firm hand and a thick hide — is not the job for him. The Big Apple has enough actors and clowns. Let's get some serious adults in here to run things.
