
Telesat and Intellian develop ka-band terminals for Lightspeed LEO
Intellian has expanded its portfolio to include advanced Ka-band active electronically scanning arrays (AESA) technology.
Telesat and Intellian have signed a contract for the development and production of Ka-band flat panel User Terminals designed for the Telesat Lightspeed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network. These terminals will provide high-speed connectivity across various sectors, including enterprise applications, wireless backhaul, government, land mobility and maritime communications.
Intellian, known for its reliability and advanced satellite technology, is leveraging its expertise in Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (AESA) to design next-generation Ka-band flat panel terminals. These lightweight, energy-efficient terminals will be manufactured at Intellians cutting-edge facility, ensuring seamless integration with the Telesat Lightspeed network.

Orange expands satellite connectivity with Eutelsat OneWeb deal
The new multi-year agreement builds on long-standing relationship between the two companies. Eutelsat Group and global telecom leader Orange have signed a new agreement that will see Orange enhance its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications capabilities through access to Eutelsats OneWeb constellation. The move marks a strategic step by Orange to expand its satellite solutions portfolio, offering high-throughput, low-latency, and resilient connectivity for enterprise and government clients worldwide. This investment allows Orange to combine OneWebs extensive satellite coverage with its existing terrestrial networks, enabling seamless, secure and uninterrupted service even in remote or underserved areas. Orange is the exclusive reseller of Konnect VHTS capacity for consumer broadband in France under an agreement dating back to 2020, while earlier this year Orange Middle East and Africa inked an agreement for capacity on the Eutelsat Konnect satellite to deliver satellite internet over its footprint.

The agreement makes Alghanim an official global channel partner for the satellite internet provider. Starlink, known as the world's most advanced satellite internet network, uses a low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellation. This technology delivers high-speed, low-latency internet to remote areas. The goal is to eliminate connectivity gaps in cities, deserts, and at sea. Through this agreement, Alghanim revealed the launch of a new tech venture called Sama X. This platform will serve as an authorized Starlink global reseller. It aims to provide Starlink services across the Middle East, North Africa, India, Turkey, Pakistan, and beyond. Kutayba Y. Alghanim, Executive Chairman of Alghanim Industries, reported that the agreement marks a key step toward a borderless digital future. He stated that the company is committed to delivering 'internet from space' to create opportunities on Earth. Starlink operates a constellation of over 7,000 LEO satellites. Since 2020, SpaceX has launched more satellites than all competitors combined. The network supports over 5 million users in more than 118 countries. Unlike traditional systems, Starlink satellites orbit closer to Earth, which reduces latency and allows real-time online experiences. The service supports many industries, including: Healthcare: Enables telemedicine in rural clinics Education & Jobs: Connects students and workers in remote areas Maritime: Powers internet access on vessels worldwide In addition, it helps manufacturers with real-time data and assists telecom firms in expanding networks. Sama X was created to support this vision. Mahmoud Samara, CEO of Alghanim Industries, announced that Sama X would offer a full-service solution. This includes customer onboarding, installation, activation, and local support. Samara added that the company is building a more connected and inclusive future. He noted that Starlink's technology can support remote learning, cloud-based businesses, and telehealth services. The new service is already taking shape in the region. Starlink has received approvals in Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Yemen. In Saudi Arabia, the service is approved for aviation and maritime use. This marks a new era of satellite internet in the MENA region and South Asia.

Astrolight Secures €2.8M to Propel Laser Communication Breakthroughs
Lithuania's Astrolight has secured €2.8 million in seed funding to advance its laser-based communication systems, aiming to establish a high-speed, secure optical data highway between satellites and Earth. This investment underscores the growing confidence in optical communication technologies as a superior alternative to traditional radio frequency systems. Astrolight's flagship product, the ATLAS terminal, is engineered to facilitate data transmission from low Earth orbit satellites to ground stations at speeds up to ten times faster than conventional methods. This technology not only enhances data throughput but also offers increased resistance to jamming and interception, addressing critical concerns in both commercial and defence sectors. The company's collaboration with NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic has positioned it among the top ten innovators selected from 44 participants. This partnership provides Astrolight with access to up to €300,000 in additional funding, specialised training, and a network of investors, facilitating the adaptation of its technologies for defence applications. ADVERTISEMENT Astrolight's POLARIS system, designed for ship-to-ship communication, exemplifies its dual-use approach. Developed in collaboration with the Lithuanian Navy and the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology, POLARIS aims to replace traditional signal lamps with laser-based communication, enhancing operational stealth and resilience in contested environments. In a significant stride towards international collaboration, Astrolight has been selected to supply its ATLAS-1 optical terminal for the PeakSat mission, a CubeSat project led by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, PeakSat will demonstrate laser communication capabilities from LEO to ground stations in Greece, marking a pivotal step in validating next-generation optical communication technologies. Astrolight's recent operational test of a mobile optical ground station achieved gigabit-per-second data rates over a 10-kilometre distance, demonstrating the viability of cost-effective, scalable ground stations built from commercial off-the-shelf components. This development is crucial in addressing the limitations of radio frequency spectrum and meeting the increasing demand for high-speed data transmission from LEO satellites. The global satellite laser communications market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 40% between 2024 and 2032, reaching an estimated $15 billion. Astrolight's advancements in laser communication technologies position it as a key player in this burgeoning market, offering solutions that cater to both commercial and defence needs. Founded in 2019 by Laurynas Mačiulis, a former CTO of Kongsberg NanoAvionics, Astrolight has rapidly evolved from a research initiative into a company at the forefront of optical communication innovation. Its strategic partnerships and technological breakthroughs reflect a commitment to enhancing global communication infrastructure through laser technology.
