Alleged assault and captivity in Kāinga Ora home sparks urgent rehousing plea
A Christchurch woman has alleged she was held captive and repeatedly assaulted over two days in May, 2025, inside her Kāinga Ora residence. She has since requested emergency relocation, citing continued threats to her safety and emotional trauma from remaining in the property where the events took place.
The woman, referred to as Joanna* for legal reasons, reported that the incident began when a man she had briefly spoken to at a bus stop weeks earlier arrived unannounced at her home on Tong Yin Street. Believing it to be a friend, she opened the door and was allegedly attacked and forced inside.

Joanna claims she was strangled, punched, kicked, and sexually assaulted multiple times during the ordeal. She said she was held in her upstairs bedroom without access to medication, was not allowed near windows, and was kept under constant threat.

Emergency services respond, accused detained at scene
After nearly two days, Joanna said she escaped after discovering the man asleep in another room. She fled to a neighbor's house and contacted police. Officers, including the armed offenders squad, entered the property and arrested the alleged offender at the scene.
She was hospitalized for several weeks, undergoing facial surgeries and treatment for head trauma. Joanna says she is now partially blind in one eye and suffers from a concussion and post-traumatic stress disorder. Photographic evidence taken in hospital reportedly supports her claims.
A man has been remanded in custody and has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including rape, kidnapping, and strangulation. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.
Joanna reports unwanted contact from prison, corrections admits oversight
Joanna also alleges that since the man's incarceration, she has received letters and phone calls indirectly linked to him. She believes the letters were sent by another inmate on the accused's behalf, violating court-imposed no-contact orders.

Jo Harrex, general manager of Christchurch Men's Prison, acknowledged that a systems failure allowed the correspondence to occur. 'I acknowledge how distressing this unwanted contact would have been for the victim, and we have taken immediate steps to prevent it from happening again,' Harrex said in a statement.
Corrections confirmed the inmate had a no-contact order and admitted the oversight in screening outgoing mail. Measures have now been reinforced to prevent similar breaches, with staff reminded to monitor mail activity more closely.
Kāinga Ora relocation request faces delays despite support from advocates
Joanna has requested to be moved from her current Kāinga Ora property due to safety concerns. With the support of hospital staff and a social worker, she claims to have contacted her housing manager weeks ago but says she received no response until media inquiries were made.
Liz Krause, Canterbury regional director of Kāinga Ora, stated that tenants seeking relocation for safety reasons must apply through the Ministry of Social Development. She added that no contact was logged from Joanna until recently, though Joanna disputes this and says her advocates have reached out on her behalf.
Krause confirmed the timeline for rehousing depends on the availability of other properties. Joanna says the delay is unacceptable and is exacerbating her trauma. 'I hate that house. I hate it,' she said.

Ahmedabad crash: DGCA orders Air India to remove 3 officials; roles related to crew scheduling

NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Saturday directed Air India to remove its three senior officials from all roles related to crew scheduling and rostering, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. As per the report, one of those named is a divisional vice president at the airline. On 12 June, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, tragically crashed into a hostel at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar, shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Of the 242 people aboard, 241 died, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, along with dozens more on the ground. In its order dated 20 June, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed Tata Group-owned Air India to promptly initiate internal disciplinary action against three officials. A week later, significant progress has been made in identifying victims. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said: 'As of 5.45 pm, 231 DNA samples of the deceased have matched with their family members. Out of those 231 matched samples, 210 bodies have been handed over to their families.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรดทองCFDs กับโบรกเกอร์ที่เชื่อถือได้ | เรียนรู้เพิ่มเติม IC Markets สมัคร Undo He added, 'From the rest of 21 bodies, 8 families are waiting for the DNA match of another member… we are in contact with the families of 10 deceased… Remaining 3 bodies are in the postmortem room. Out of this 210, bodies of 16 were transferred by air, and 194 by road.' Air India's CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson, reassured the public that the fleet, especially Boeing 787s, remains safe. In a statement, he confirmed: 'Have our aircraft been deemed safe? Yes. We have completed the additional precautionary checks…' He emphasised the airline's commitment to caution: 'Where there is any doubt, we will not release aircraft …for service.' Wilson pledged ongoing support for affected families and staff: 'We continue to mourn… Around 500 colleagues from Air India and 17 other Tata companies remain in Ahmedabad to help the families… 200 have received some degree of solace and closure.' He added: 'The counselling services… continue to be available to everyone and I encourage you to avail of it.'

Telangana municipal officials booked for Rs 7.2 lakh fraud: Fake bills raised under 'Pattana Pragathi' scheme; ACB names Huzurnagar commissioner, 2 engineers

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against Huzurnagar municipal commissioner Kankati Srinivas Reddy and two other officials for allegedly misappropriating Rs 7.2 lakh of govt funds during their earlier tenure in Tandur municipality under 'Pattana Pragathi' scheme. The ACB action followed a vigilance inquiry after a complaint by Ward 13 councillor of Tandur municipality, Varala Srinivas Reddy, accusing the commissioner and two engineers of creating bills for fictitious development work using benami contractors by falsifying records. The ACB FIR, issued on May 5, said that Srinivas Reddy, Mohd Younus (deputy executive engineer), and Gopala Mahesh (assistant engineer) colluded to siphon off govt funds in the name fake development work. The FIR said that in one instance the complainant personally undertook silt removal in Chilakavagu, a drain flowing through his ward, using his own resources. However, officials sanctioned Rs 3 lakh in the name of another individual, R Santosh Kumar, for the same work. In another case, officials exaggerated the usage of an excavator during the second phase of the scheme. While the machine was deployed for 20 hours, the records falsely showed 144 hours of work, and bills worth Rs 5 lakh were raised. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 4BHK+Family Lounge+Utility room at 4.49Cr (All Incl)* ATS Triumph, Gurgaon Book Now Undo The ACB's internal investigation by inspector Akula Srinivas revealed that the trio submitted fake bills using three measurement books for Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2.46 lakh and Rs 1.73 lakh - totalling Rs 7.20 lakh. These works were neither executed nor verified on the ground. The inquiry concluded that all three officials abused their official positions and committed offences under Section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), and IPC Sections 409 and 420.

Human trafficking & sex racket busted near UP Police HQ in Lucknow; here's how a tip-off blew the lid

LUCKNOW: Just half a kilometre away from the Signature Building — the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Lucknow — whispers of scandal swirled around a flat in Omaxe R1, where Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana (33), posing as a journalist with GTS News, lived with his Uzbek live-in partner, Lola Kayumova (48). Their seemingly ordinary life by day turned sinister under the cover of night. Originally from Alappuzha, Kerala, Thrijin had rented apartment Orchid B104, where two other Uzbek women, Holida and Nilofar, also resided. 'All the occupants of the apartment are allegedly involved in a sex racket, whose kingpin is a plastic surgeon practicing in Lucknow for over 11 years. He has been identified as Dr Vivek Gupta,' said an official source. Dr Vivek Gupta The case came to light following a tip-off to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Lucknow. The FRRO team first developed ground intelligence on the accused and later roped in the Sushant Golf City police of the Lucknow Commissionerate to investigate further. An FIR has been registered against Dr Vivek Gupta, who operates three clinics — in Ahmamau, Bangla Bazar, and Viram Khand-5, Gomti Nagar. According to his clinic's website, Dr Gupta is trained at King George's Medical University and KEM Hospital, Mumbai. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo He specialises in aesthetic surgeries, hair transplants, and reconstructive procedures, offering what the site describes as 'precision and compassion.' Another person named in the FIR is Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana. Police have booked him under multiple sections — Section 318(4) (cheating) and Section 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita; Section 5 of the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939; Sections 14A and 7(1) of the Foreigners Act, 1946; and Sections 8, 10, and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigner Act, 2025. Uzbek nationals Holida and Nilofar have been detained for questioning. Meanwhile, Thrijin Raj, Lola Kayumova, and Dr Vivek Gupta are currently absconding. Sources said Lola Kayumova, who has been living in India illegally for the past seven years, is on the radar of the Uzbekistan government, which had earlier issued a lookout notice for her via Interpol. 'On the pretext of offering jobs in India, Lola brought poor Uzbek women through her network. Once they arrived, their passports and visas were confiscated. Thrijin Raj arranged fake Indian IDs for the trafficked women — including voter ID cards, Aadhaar, and others. Dr Vivek Gupta played a key role by using his plastic surgery skills to alter facial features, making the Uzbek women resemble Indian nationals. All these women were then forced into prostitution,' added the source. In the FIR, Holida and Nilofar claimed their passports and visas were stolen two years ago. They have further informed police that over the years, several other foreign nationals also entered India with Lola Kayumova's help, and many of them had visited Dr Vivek Gupta's clinic for plastic surgery. 'Their apartment became a hub of nocturnal activity, with frequent visits from foreign women. Cloaked in secrecy, these women were ferried around the city in local cabs, disappearing into the night. Thrijin was running much more than a news desk,' said a local resident of Omaxe R1. Police have recovered Thrijin's Aadhaar card, bank documents, journalist ID card, his father Rajan's Aadhaar, and both the passport and Aadhaar card of Lola Kayumova. Interestingly, Thrijin's Aadhaar lists the address as Baldev Vihar, Telibagh — about 13 km from Omaxe R1. 'The role of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Omaxe R1 must also be investigated — how was such a flat rented to this group despite glaring irregularities?' the resident added. Further legal sections are expected to be invoked as the investigation progresses, according to official sources.
