The woman, referred to as Joanna* for legal reasons, reported that the incident began when a man she had briefly spoken to at a bus stop weeks earlier arrived unannounced at her home on Tong Yin Street. Believing it to be a friend, she opened the door and was allegedly attacked and forced inside.

After nearly two days, Joanna said she escaped after discovering the man asleep in another room. She fled to a neighbor's house and contacted police. Officers, including the armed offenders squad, entered the property and arrested the alleged offender at the scene.
She was hospitalized for several weeks, undergoing facial surgeries and treatment for head trauma. Joanna says she is now partially blind in one eye and suffers from a concussion and post-traumatic stress disorder. Photographic evidence taken in hospital reportedly supports her claims.
A man has been remanded in custody and has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including rape, kidnapping, and strangulation. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.

Joanna also alleges that since the man's incarceration, she has received letters and phone calls indirectly linked to him. She believes the letters were sent by another inmate on the accused's behalf, violating court-imposed no-contact orders.

Jo Harrex, general manager of Christchurch Men's Prison, acknowledged that a systems failure allowed the correspondence to occur. 'I acknowledge how distressing this unwanted contact would have been for the victim, and we have taken immediate steps to prevent it from happening again,' Harrex said in a statement.
Corrections confirmed the inmate had a no-contact order and admitted the oversight in screening outgoing mail. Measures have now been reinforced to prevent similar breaches, with staff reminded to monitor mail activity more closely.
Kāinga Ora relocation request faces delays despite support from advocates
Joanna has requested to be moved from her current Kāinga Ora property due to safety concerns. With the support of hospital staff and a social worker, she claims to have contacted her housing manager weeks ago but says she received no response until media inquiries were made.
Liz Krause, Canterbury regional director of Kāinga Ora, stated that tenants seeking relocation for safety reasons must apply through the Ministry of Social Development. She added that no contact was logged from Joanna until recently, though Joanna disputes this and says her advocates have reached out on her behalf.
Krause confirmed the timeline for rehousing depends on the availability of other properties. Joanna says the delay is unacceptable and is exacerbating her trauma. 'I hate that house. I hate it,' she said.

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against Huzurnagar municipal commissioner Kankati Srinivas Reddy and two other officials for allegedly misappropriating Rs 7.2 lakh of govt funds during their earlier tenure in Tandur municipality under 'Pattana Pragathi' scheme. The ACB action followed a vigilance inquiry after a complaint by Ward 13 councillor of Tandur municipality, Varala Srinivas Reddy, accusing the commissioner and two engineers of creating bills for fictitious development work using benami contractors by falsifying records. The ACB FIR, issued on May 5, said that Srinivas Reddy, Mohd Younus (deputy executive engineer), and Gopala Mahesh (assistant engineer) colluded to siphon off govt funds in the name fake development work. The FIR said that in one instance the complainant personally undertook silt removal in Chilakavagu, a drain flowing through his ward, using his own resources. However, officials sanctioned Rs 3 lakh in the name of another individual, R Santosh Kumar, for the same work. In another case, officials exaggerated the usage of an excavator during the second phase of the scheme. Their seemingly ordinary life by day turned sinister under the cover of night. Originally from Alappuzha, Kerala, Thrijin had rented apartment Orchid B104, where two other Uzbek women, Holida and Nilofar, also resided. 'All the occupants of the apartment are allegedly involved in a sex racket, whose kingpin is a plastic surgeon practicing in Lucknow for over 11 years. All these women were then forced into prostitution,' added the source. In the FIR, Holida and Nilofar claimed their passports and visas were stolen two years ago. They have further informed police that over the years, several other foreign nationals also entered India with Lola Kayumova's help, and many of them had visited Dr Vivek Gupta's clinic for plastic surgery. 'Their apartment became a hub of nocturnal activity, with frequent visits from foreign women. Cloaked in secrecy, these women were ferried around the city in local cabs, disappearing into the night. Thrijin was running much more than a news desk,' said a local resident of Omaxe R1. Police have recovered Thrijin's Aadhaar card, bank documents, journalist ID card, his father Rajan's Aadhaar, and both the passport and Aadhaar card of Lola Kayumova. Interestingly, Thrijin's Aadhaar lists the address as Baldev Vihar, Telibagh — about 13 km from Omaxe R1. 'The role of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Omaxe R1 must also be investigated — how was such a flat rented to this group despite glaring irregularities?' the resident added. Further legal sections are expected to be invoked as the investigation progresses, according to official sources.
