Epic Universe opens to thrill crowds, with hopes of boosting economy in Central Florida

Yahoo23-05-2025

The Brief
Epic Universe opened in Orlando after six years in development, debuting with short wait times and high fanfare.
The park is expected to drive major economic growth across Central Florida's $92.5 billion tourism industry.
With its scale and ambition, Epic Universe reinforces Orlando's status as the theme park capital of the world.
ORLANDO, Fla. - After six years in development, Universal's long-anticipated Epic Universe theme park officially opened its gates Thursday, marking the first major new park to launch in Orlando in more than two decades.
What we know
Universal Orlando officially opened its new Epic Universe theme park on Thursday, marking the first major theme park addition to the region in more than 25 years.
The park includes five immersive lands themed around popular franchises such as Super Nintendo and Harry Potter. Despite high anticipation, wait times for most rides remained under 25 minutes, and crowds were surprisingly manageable — suggesting a controlled, soft-launch strategy by Universal.
The backstory
Universal's newly opened Epic Universe is doing more than attracting crowds — it's transforming Orlando's landscape and supercharging the local economy, particularly in the once-overlooked International Drive corridor.
Epic Universe has been in development for six years, representing one of Universal's most ambitious projects. The park's announcement stirred global interest, with pre-sale tickets selling out as early as October.
The last major park debut in Orlando was in the 1990s, making Thursday's opening not just an event, but a generational milestone for Florida's tourism industry.
Dig deeper
Located on 160 acres in Orange County, Epic Universe is now a vibrant draw for tourists and businesses alike, sitting on what was once vacant and contaminated land formerly owned by defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The transformation has turned what some called "wasteland" into a global attraction.
Before Epic Universe broke ground, the area served a far different purpose. Documents show Lockheed Martin conducted missile and fire control testing on the property from 1958 to 1996, leaving behind contaminants like benzene, cadmium and vinyl chloride.
After Universal acquired the site in 1998, cleanup efforts began. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency commended both Lockheed and Universal for collaborating on the remediation, which cleared the way for development.
Timeline
The launch of Epic Universe isn't just a milestone for Universal — it's a shot in the arm for Central Florida's $92.5 billion tourism sector.
Local business leaders are already reporting increased foot traffic and renewed interest in surrounding areas. Analysts expect the park to drive substantial growth in jobs, tourism revenue, and regional development. It also raises the bar for theme park competition, potentially influencing the future direction of entertainment attractions nationwide. Below is a timeline of significant dates leading up to Epic Universe's grand opening:
1998: Universal acquires the site from Lockheed Martin, cleanup efforts begin.
2004: EPA clears path for redevelopment of the land.
2019: Universal announces plans for Epic Universe.
2020–2022: Development faces delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Late 2024: Tickets go on sale, and final preparations begin.
May 2025: Epic Universe officially opens to the public.
What we don't know
Universal has not disclosed exact attendance numbers or confirmed whether opening day capacity was intentionally limited. There's also uncertainty around how long the lower wait times and controlled entry will last.
What they're saying
The park's opening has created a wave of prosperity for surrounding businesses, hotels, and infrastructure projects. The Hilton Grand Vacations Hotel, overlooking Epic Universe, has seen an influx of international guests.
Experts say the entire corridor is booming, with new developments including the expansion of the Orange County Convention Center and the planned Sunshine Corridor rail project.
"When the economists do the projections for 2025, the total economic impact is going to be somewhere north of that $92.5 billion," said Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

Will '28 Years Later' take a bite out of ‘Elio'? Will ‘Dragon' continue to soar? Here's our box-office prediction

Despite two high-profile film releases this weekend, How to Train Your Dragon won't be slayed at the box office. Universal's live-action adventure will remain on top of the June 20-22 box office, adding over $40 million to its $113 million domestic gross so far. How to Train Your Dragon has earned $227 million worldwide since it debuted last week. More from GoldDerby 'Jaws' turns 50: Steven Spielberg's caught-on-camera Oscar snub still smarts - and shows need for Best Director reform All the 'Abbott Elementary' Season 4 Emmy predictions, including those 'Sunny' guest stars Ryan Murphy and the JFK Jr.-Carolyn Bessette controversy, explained: Why 'American Love Story' Instagram post got so much hate Sony's highly anticipated 28 Years Later, directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire), and Disney/Pixar's Elio will face off in a close battle for second place — both are projected to earn around $30 million. 28 Years Later will easily become the franchise's biggest debut, surpassing 2002's 28 Days Later ($10 million) and 2007's 28 Weeks Later ($9.8 million). Beyond its promising start, it won't take much for 28 Years Later to become the highest-grossing installment in the trilogy, a title currently held by 28 Days Later, which earned $75 million worldwide. With strong anticipation and a legacy behind it, the film is set to breathe new life into the acclaimed zombie franchise. Set nearly three decades after the contagious rage virus devastated the world, 28 Years Later follows a group of isolated survivors who journey to the mainland, only to discover that a dangerous mutation threatens to decimate the remaining population. This latest installment will launch a new trilogy from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. The film was shot back-to-back with its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, slated for release in 2026. Meanwhile, a third entry — and the fifth installment in the franchise — is already in development, ensuring that the iconic series continues to expand its terrifying legacy. Directed by Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian, and Domee Shi, Elio tells the story of an 11-year-old who unexpectedly forms a unique bond with eccentric aliens after being mistakenly identified as Earth's official intergalactic ambassador. With a production budget of $150 million, the stakes are high for Pixar, which has faced challenges in recent years. Three of its recent original movies — Turning Red, Luca, and the Oscar-winning Soul — were released directly to Disney+ instead of full theatrical runs, raising questions about the studio's box office strategy and its ability to deliver theatrical hits in a competitive marketplace. Last year, Inside Out 2 delivered a record-breaking $1.69 billion worldwide for Pixar, reaffirming the studio's success with sequels, which have consistently proven to be more profitable than original concepts. Early projections suggest Elio could earn the unfortunate distinction of being the studio's worst theatrical debut ever — a title currently held by 2023's Elemental, which opened to a modest $29.6 million in North America. All eyes will be on the weekend numbers to see if Pixar can defy predictions and turn things around. Also debuting this weekend is Magenta Light Studios' Bride Wars, a universally panned action-comedy starring Rebel Wilson as a secret agent who will stop at nothing to save her best friend's wedding. Gold Derby readers predict that How to Train Your Dragon will win the June 20-22 weekend with between $25 million and $50 million domestically. 28 Years Later is the runner-up selection of our oddsmakers. NEW RELEASES Director: Danny Boyle Distributor: Sony Pictures A group of survivors of the rage virus live on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors. The horror sequel, starring Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, has a running time of one hour, 55 minutes, and is rated R. 28 Years Later is certified "fresh" with a 92 percent score per the aggregated critic reviews at Rotten Tomatoes; "generally favorbale" reviews compiled by Metacritic resulted in an overall score of 76 percent. Director: Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian, and Domee Shi Distributor: Walt Disney Studios Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination, finds himself on a cosmic misadventure where he must form new bonds with alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be. The animated adventure, featuring the voices of Zoe Saldaña, Yonas Kibreab, Remy Edgerly, and Brad Garrett, has a running time of one hour, 39 minutes, and is rated PG. Elio is certified "fresh" with a 86 percent score per the aggregated critic reviews at Rotten Tomatoes; "generally favorable" reviews compiled by Metacritic resulted in an overall score of 66 percent. Director: Simon West Distributor: Magenta Light Studios When a mercenary group takes a lavish wedding hostage, they have no idea what they are in for as the maid of honor is actually a secret agent ready to rain hellfire upon anyone who would ruin her best friend's wedding. The action-comedy, starring Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Anna Chlumsky, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, has a running time of one hour, 45 minutes, and is rated R. Bride Hard is certified "rotten" with a 27 percent score per the aggregated critic reviews at Rotten Tomatoes; "overwhelmingly negative" reviews compiled by Metacritic resulted in an overall score of 15 percent. BOX-OFFICE PREDICTIONS How to Train Your Dragon shows no signs of slowing down, expected to stoke the box-office flames with $40 million in its second weekend. In the highly competitive battle for second place, projections suggest 28 Years Later will narrowly edge out Elio, with the latter facing stiff competition for the younger audience still captivated by Dragon. Each are expected to earn around $30 million. Speaking of younger audiences, Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake is likely to secure fourth place this weekend, bringing in another $8 million domestically. The film has already proven to be a massive success, grossing $864 million worldwide to date. Rounding out the top five will likely be A24's Materialists, a rom-com from Celine Song starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. However, it faces fierce competition from Tom Cruise's action-packed Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Paramount's blockbuster continues to draw audiences, amassing $509 million globally so far. It wouldn't be surprising if Cruise manages to overtake Materialists in the final rankings. Here are Gold Derby's predictions box-office rankings for the top five: 1. How to Train Your Dragon 2. 28 Years Later 3. Elio 4. Lilo & Stitch 5. 'Wall-E With a Gun': Midjourney Generates Videos of Disney Characters Amid Massive Copyright Lawsuit

Jun 20, 2025 4:28 PM A week after Disney and Universal filed a landmark lawsuit against Midjourney, the generative AI startup's new V1 video tool will make clips of Shrek, Deadpool, and other famous creations. Photograph: Anadolu/Getty Images Midjourney's new AI-generated video tool will produce animated clips featuring copyrighted characters from Disney and Universal, WIRED has found—including video of the beloved Pixar character Wall-E holding a gun. It's been a busy month for Midjourney. This week, the generative AI startup released its sophisticated new video tool, V1, which lets users make short animated clips from images they generate or upload. The current version of Midjourney's AI video tool requires an image as a starting point; generating videos using text-only prompts is not supported. The release of V1 comes on the heels of a very different kind of announcement earlier in June: Hollywood behemoths Disney and Universal filed a blockbuster lawsuit against Midjourney, alleging that it violates copyright law by generating images with the studios' intellectual property. Midjourney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Disney and Universal reiterated statements made by its executives about the lawsuit, including Disney's legal head Horacio Gutierrez alleging that Midjourney's output amounts to 'piracy.' It appears that Midjourney may have attempted to put up some video-specific guardrails for V1. In our testing, it blocked animations from prompts based on Frozen's Elsa, Boss Baby, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse, although it would still generate images of these characters. When WIRED asked V1 to animate images of Elsa, an 'AI moderator' blocked the prompt from generating videos. 'Al Moderation is cautious with realistic videos, especially of people,' read the pop-up message. These limitations, which appear to be guardrails, are incomplete. WIRED testing shows that V1 will generate animated clips of a wide variety of Universal and Disney characters, including Homer Simpson, Shrek, Minions, Deadpool, Star Wars ' C-3PO, and Darth Vader. For example, when asked for an image of Minions eating a banana, Midjourney generated four outputs with recognizable versions of the cute, yellow characters. Then, when WIRED clicked the 'Animate' button on one of the outputs, Midjourney generated a follow-up video with the characters eating a banana—peel and all. Although Midjourney seems to have blocked some Disney and Universal-related prompts for videos, WIRED could sometimes circumvent the potential guardrails during tests by using spelling variations or repeating the prompt. Midjourney also lets users provide a prompt to inform the animation; using that feature, WIRED was able to to generate clips of copyrighted characters behaving in adult ways, like Wall-E brandishing a firearm and Yoda smoking a joint. The Disney and Universal lawsuit poses a major threat to Midjourney, which also faces additional legal challenges from visual artists who allege copyright infringement as well. Although it focused largely on providing examples from Midjourney's image-generation tools, the complaint alleges that video would 'only enhance Midjourney ability to distribute infringing copies, reproductions, and derivatives of Plaintiffs' Copyrighted Works.' The complaint includes dozens of alleged Midjourney images showing Universal and Disney characters. The set was initially produced as part of a report on Midjourney's so-called 'visual plagiarism problem' from AI critic and cognitive scientist Gary Marcus and visual artist Reid Southen. 'Reid and I pointed out this problem 18 months ago, and there's been very little progress and very little change,' says Marcus. 'We still have the same situation of unlicensed materials being used, and guardrails that work a little bit, but not very well. For all the talk about exponential progress in AI, what we're getting is better graphics, not a fundamental principle solution to this problem.'

Paramount Declares Comedies Are Back With New ‘Naked Gun' Footage; Trots Out Extended ‘Running Man' Look

With his usual flair, Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution, Mark Viane, kicked off the studio's CineEurope presentation today with a hysterical video that reimagined him as the head of 'The Paramount Squad,' a reference to the upcoming Naked Gun reboot. Sporting a white wig, Viane was joined by other Par execs including the EMEA team while the mini film also nodded to upcoming studio titles including Smurfs and the latest Spongebob movie, among others. After the video and as he took the stage here, replete in boxers and skirt à la Liam Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr in The Naked Gun, Viane exclaimed, 'Comedies are back!' More from Deadline 'Meet The Parents 4': Paramount To Co-Produce With Universal & Distribute Internationally - CineEurope 'Superman' Flies Into Barcelona With 30 Minutes Of Footage During Warner Bros' CineEurope Presentation Universal Swoops Into CineEurope With Fresh 'Jurassic World Rebirth' & 'Wicked: For Good' Clips; Touts Steven Spielberg & Christopher Nolan Projects The Naked Gun starts global rollout on July 30, getting to domestic theaters on August 1. Neeson introduced an exclusive look at the movie via a video message and cheekily said to exhibitors, 'remember to book my movie — or I am coming for you.' During the presentation, Viane also announced that Paramount will co-produce with Universal Meet the Parents 4, and will handle international distribution. There was also extended Smurfs footage, including the opening sequence, that was introduced by Rihanna who voices Smurfette. The movie kicks off July 16 internationally and goes domestic on July 18. Moving away from comedy and targeting the underserved female audience, a first look at Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You was introduced via video by the cast including Allison Williams, Dave Franco, Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames. The story is set against a tragic event that unlocks a series of secrets, lies and regrets. A fall 2025 release is on deck. Also showing up for the first time for exhibitors was Primate, a horror movie about a domesticated chimp gone bonkers. That's swinging into cinemas in 2026. Viane closed out the Par presentation with new extended footage from The Running Man. Glenn Powell, Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo star in the Stephen King chase thriller adaptation from director Edgar Wright. Set in a dystopian America (in the year 2025), the story centers on Ben Richards (Powell), a desperate man who participates in violent reality show in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. Powell, Brolin and Domingo sent a video to Barcelona to talk up the film and introduce the footage. Release is on November 7 this year.
