UAE: Does your travel insurance cover war and conflict? What travellers need to know

Recent upheavals in the
Middle East
, including missile exchanges between Israel and Iran, have led to significant travel disruptions. For UAE travellers, this has sparked a growing interest in travel insurance, as many seek protection against unexpected events like flight cancellations and delays.
Yet, understanding what travel insurance actually covers, especially in cases of war or geopolitical conflict, is crucial before booking that next trip.
Travel Disruptions and Shifting Plans
Following the escalation of armed conflict in the region, UAE airlines have extended flight cancellations to key destinations including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, and Israel. Many travellers from the UAE have had to make last-minute changes to their itineraries, either switching destinations or opting for countries where air travel remains unaffected to avoid delays on their return trips.
Despite these challenges, summer travel plans are still in motion for many Emiratis and expatriates. For them, travel isn't just leisure, it's a family tradition and a vital part of their lifestyle. However, it is important to note that most standard travel insurance policies do not cover claims arising directly from geopolitical unrest or military conflict.
What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
Speaking to a local news agency, Khaleej Times, Toshita Chauhan, Chief Business Officer- General Insurance at Policybazaar.ae, explained that 'Claims arising directly from geo-political unrest or military conflict remain excluded under typical policy terms.'

She further clarified, 'A standard travel policy offers financial protection against baggage loss, medical emergencies, trip delays, and cancellations but does not provide compensation for in-flight events or operational airline failures unless linked to broader delays or trip curtailment.'
Chauhan emphasized that travel insurance still plays a critical role in addressing other common travel issues: 'For problems like missed connections, baggage delays, or last-minute cancellations due to operational failures, travel insurance is proving to be an important safeguard.'
She noted a rising trend, stating, 'Recent travel disruptions across the Gulf, especially flight delays, cancellations, and temporary airspace closures, have contributed to a perceptible uptick in demand for travel insurance, with trip cancellation and flight delay coverage becoming some of the most searched-for features.'
The Impact of Recent Events on Travel Insurance Demand
Another factor contributing to increased interest in travel insurance was the tragic
Air India
plane crash.
According to Chauhan, 'The Air India incident has undoubtedly triggered a rise in consumer interest but with an important distinction. What many travellers are looking for is flight protection or airline coverage, which differs from traditional travel insurance.'
She added, 'We've seen a spike in queries related to coverage scope, indicating that travellers are more discerning now—they are asking the right questions and seeking clearer coverage terms before purchasing.'
Travel Insurance: Increasingly Important and Often Mandatory
While not every country mandates travel insurance, there is a clear global shift toward stricter health and financial safeguards for visitors, especially since the pandemic.
Chauhan pointed out, 'Countries within the Schengen zone, for instance, require travellers to have a minimum coverage of €30,000 (Dh126,387) for medical emergencies. Similarly, destinations like Thailand, Turkey, and certain Gulf nations have introduced mandatory travel insurance policies for specific visa categories.'
She stressed, 'The global trend is clearly shifting toward stricter health and financial safeguards for visitors, and travel insurance plays a critical role in this framework.'
For many UAE travellers, purchasing insurance is more than just a precaution, it's a smart financial decision. 'With rising international medical costs, a single hospitalisation abroad can run into thousands of dollars,' Chauhan said.
'Travel insurance offers comprehensive protection against such expenses, including emergency medical treatment, trip cancellations, baggage loss, flight delays, and even Covid-19-related disruptions.
'
Additionally, several foreign embassies across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia now require proof of travel insurance as part of the visa application process. UAE expats visiting their home countries increasingly include travel insurance as a necessary part of their travel checklist, mindful of the risks posed by unexpected medical emergencies or travel mishaps even during short visits.
Rising Costs of Travel Insurance in the UAE
Even before the recent escalation in Middle East tensions, travel insurance premiums in the UAE were already rising sharply. According to data from Policybazaar UAE, premiums have increased by 12 to 18 percent year-on-year. This surge translates to an added cost of between Dh15 and Dh70 per policy, depending on factors such as trip duration, destination, and the traveller's age.
Hitesh Motwani, Deputy CEO at Insurancemarket.ae, told
Khaleej Times
, 'There are tailored policies that allow travellers to choose coverage that fits their specific needs and financial plans.'
Despite these increases, Motwani reassured travellers: 'Travel insurance remains relatively affordable on a per-trip basis.'
Summary for UAE Travellers:
War and conflict-related claims are generally excluded from standard travel insurance policies.
Travel insurance covers medical emergencies, baggage loss, trip delays, cancellations, and some operational airline failures.
Demand for travel insurance is rising due to regional instability and high-profile incidents like the Air India crash.
Many countries require travel insurance as part of visa entry rules, particularly in the Schengen zone and some Gulf countries.
Travel insurance is a smart financial safeguard against rising medical and travel-related costs abroad.
Premiums have increased by up to 18% in the UAE, but affordable tailored options remain available.
Travellers are encouraged to carefully review the terms of their insurance policies, understanding exactly what is covered, especially in uncertain times, and to plan their travel with these considerations in mind.

1-hr travel to Omkareshwar & Mahakaleshwar by mid-2026
Indore: In a major boost for religious tourism and regional connectivity, Indore, strategically located between the Omkareshwar and Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlingas, is set to offer an unprecedented one-hour travel time to both revered destinations by the next year. This significant reduction in travel duration is largely due to the nearing completion of Madhya Pradesh's first two road tunnels on the Indore-Khandwa road and the upgrade of the Indore-Ujjain four-lane highway to a six-lane expressway. According to Sumesh Banjhal, NHAI Indore project director, approximately 80% of the work on the state's pioneering road tunnels in Choral, part of the Indore-Icchapur highway, was completed. "We are confident to open the tunnel for traffic by June 2026, while the Mortakka bridge over the Narmada River is also expected to be completed by December 2025," Banjhal stated. He added that the Public Works Department (PWD) is simultaneously working to complete a 12 km-long four-lane road connecting the Mortakka Bridge directly to Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir. Indore-Ujjain four-lane highway is being upgraded to a six-lane expressway by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPMRDC), with completion also anticipated within the next year, senior officials confirmed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Currently, the 60 km journey from Indore airport to Ujjain's Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir takes between 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Traveling the approximately 90 km to Khandwa's Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir via the existing route takes around 3 hours. "As both major roads leading to Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir and Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir, situated to the left and right of Indore, are expected to be completed in the next year, the journey time to either major religious destination from MP's commercial city will be drastically reduced to one hour," Banjhal explainedwhile talking to TOI. He provided an illustrative example, saying, "People arriving at Indore airport from Delhi or Mumbai will soon be able to reach Ujjain's Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir, return to Indore, then go to Khandwa's Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir, and still return to Indore airport to catch a flight for their respective city, all within the same day." Indore collector Asheesh Singh, who also holds the charge of 'Ujjain Kumbh Mela Kshetra,' emphasised the critical role these upgraded highways will play, especially in view of Ujjain's Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028, which is expected to attract millions of devotees. He affirmed that efforts are underway to complete these two highways, along with other major road projects, within their stipulated deadlines.

Experts roped in for busy trafffic crossings
Jaipur: To address growing traffic congestion, the Jaipur Commissionerate's traffic department plans to engage a traffic institution for expert solutions at two major city junctions—the MI Road–Tonk Road Junction near the Yadgar traffic headquarters and the Govt Hostel Crossing near the Commissionerate headquarters. Officials said the rapid increase in vehicular traffic has turned these crossings into daily bottlenecks. The situation is expected to worsen with the upcoming construction of Jaipur Metro Line 2 by the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC). The main line will pass through the Govt Hostel Crossing, while a spur from Chandpole Gate will link Line 1 and Line 2 at the same point. JMRC also has plans for metro connectivity to Ajmeri Gate. DCP (traffic) Shaheen C confirmed that preliminary surveys and measures have been implemented. "We are now seeking expert technical input and will appoint a third-party agency to suggest solutions. Institutions like MNIT and others are under consideration," she said. Meanwhile, the traffic department installed sensor-enabled signals at these two crossings. Such signals are installed at a few other crossings in the city, like the Rambagh Circle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "The time limits (for green or red) at these signals are not pre-set. These signals determine the volume of traffic on each flank and glow red or green according to the requirement. Recently, we installed these signals at these two crossings. Traffic movements at both crossings improved to some extent following the installations," said a senior traffic official. The traffic department also decided to install signals with illuminated poles at all the traffic signals across the city. This technology enables the lighting on the entire pole to be synchronized with the signal, which helps motorists to have a view of the signal, even if they are stranded behind a bigger vehicle.

Hoteliers urge state govt to address issues to boost tourism sector
Bhubaneswar: Members of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO) on Saturday urged the govt to address challenges facing the tourism sector, including lack of land and infrastructure, to help the state become the 7th most popular destination for tourists by 2027. "The lack of proper infrastructure and land availability is severely hampering tourism development in Odisha. We are ready to invest, but there's a visible gap in demand and supply," said Milind Gupta, secretary general of HRAO, ahead of the 6th Odisha Tourism Conclave scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar on June 25. He added that the Tourism Policy 2022 did not yield results, and fresh proposals, such as simplifying approval processes and categorising tourism under the special economic zone (SEZ) framework, single-window clearance, and providing capital and interest subsidies for investors, have been submitted to the govt. HRAO members stated that Odisha remains among the states with the least number of hotel rooms, with just 16 classified hotels and 1,055 rooms available till 2023. However, a total of 97.25 lakh domestic and 0.45 lakh international tourists visited the state in 2023, as per the India Tourism Statistics Report 2024. "There was growth in the tourism sector, though the pace is slow. To increase the pace, there is a need for a policy overhaul. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo We have high hopes from the govt that they will consider our proposals and include them in the new tourism policy," said Debashis Patnaik, another HRAO member. "The govt identified land banks in 15 places across the state," he added. The conclave will bring together travel experts, investors, and industry leaders to discuss ways to boost infrastructure, attract investment and promote international tourism. According to HRAO, despite its rich cultural and natural heritage, including Asia's largest lagoon, Chilika, and a 480-km coastline, Odisha has been losing over Rs 9,000 crore annually in foreign exchange due to outbound Indian tourism. HRAO emphasised the need to capitalise on the momentum by investing in manpower training and integrating tourism-focused education from the school level.
