Karnataka has unveiled an ambitious legislative proposal aimed at curbing the proliferation of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms. The Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, seeks to introduce stringent penalties, including up to seven years in prison and fines as high as Rs 10 lakh, for individuals found guilty of disseminating fake news. The proposed law also targets those spreading misinformation, prescribing jail terms ranging from two to five years, alongside monetary penalties.advertisement
Notably, these offences are classified as cognisable and non-bailable, underscoring the government's intent to treat such violations with utmost seriousness.A central feature of the bill is the establishment of a six-member social-media regulatory authority. This body would be empowered to ban the promotion and spread of fake news, prohibit content deemed insulting to women, and restrict the publication of material that disrespects Sanatana Dharma, its symbols, beliefs, or that promotes superstition. The authority will also ensure that content related to science, history, religion, philosophy, and literature posted on social media is grounded in authentic research. To expedite accountability and enforcement, the bill proposes the creation of special courts, with the concurrence of the Karnataka High Court. These courts, presided over by sessions judges, would have jurisdiction over one or more districts and would be responsible for issuing directives to intermediaries, publishers, broadcasters, and any entity controlling communication mediums that disseminate misinformation within Karnataka.advertisementIf such directions are ignored, the courts would have the authority to impose simple imprisonment of up to two years and levy fines of Rs 25,000 per day, up to a maximum of Rs 25 lakh. The draft legislation also outlines a process for aggrieved parties, granting them 30 days to respond to official notices. In cases involving companies, the bill stipulates that action can be taken not only against the organization but also against directors and employees who were present during the violation, thereby extending liability to individuals within corporate structures. This proposed crackdown reflects the state government's heightened concern over the societal impact of misinformation and the challenges posed by rapidly evolving digital platforms.By introducing a dedicated regulatory authority and special courts, Karnataka aims to set a precedent for robust legal frameworks designed to safeguard public discourse and uphold the integrity of information shared online.Tune InTrending Reel

Himachal's sex ratio records improvement, touches 964 in 2024

The Himachal Pradesh government said on Sunday that the state saw a significant improvement in the sex ratio -- a rise from 947 in 2023 to 964 in 2024. It attributed the improvement in gender equality to a growing societal shift towards valuing the girl child, reinforced by various schemes launched to support their well-being. The sex ratio is the measure of the number of females per 1,000 males in a given population. It serves as a crucial yardstick to measure gender equality. The state government said that the financial support for the marriage of girls from economically weaker sections continues to be a key focus area. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana, Rs 1,989.31 lakh has been provided as to help 3,956 girls at the time of their marriage. Likewise, the Mukhyamantri Shagun Yojana has extended support to 12,192 girls, with financial assistance of Rs 3,779.52 lakh as 'shagun'. These initiatives reflect the state's commitment to ensuring dignity and support for young women as they enter a new phase of life, an official statement said. Recognising the right of widows to remarry and lead a respectful life, the government has also extended financial assistance through the Widow Remarriage Scheme. Under this scheme, 239 women have been supported with an assistance of Rs 291.15 lakh, encouraging their reintegration into society with dignity and support. The welfare of orphan children has been given special attention under the Mukhyamantri Sukh Aashray Yojana, through which Rs 25.98 crore has been provided to support their overall well-being. For educational support, 9,859 children have received Rs 302.18 lakh under the scheme, helping them to grow and learn in a secure and nurturing environment. Besides, the state government took a historic step by passing the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill of 1972. This step is helping promoting gender equality and empowering women. It addresses long-standing inequalities in property rights and shows the commitment towards social justice for women, the state government said. The initiative reflects the vision of the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and is a bold step towards giving women greater financial independence and social empowerment across the state. Apart from this, the state government has also started the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojana, under which it will deposit Rs 25,000 with an insurance company for each of the first two daughters born in a below poverty line (BPL) family. The parents of the girl will receive a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh each. The deposited amount will be handed over to the girl when she turns 18 or any time before she reaches the age of 27. To support working women, the state government plans to build 13 working women hostels across key locations like Solan, Baddi, Palampur and Gagret, and the Medical Device Park in Solan. These hostels, to be constructed in this fiscal at a cost of Rs 132 crore, will provide safe, affordable and convenient accommodation for employed women, enabling their economic independence.

Also present were Minister of State Shivendra Raje Bhosale, other public representatives, and senior government officials. Highway Approvals And Centre's Support "We had requested the central government - I had personally requested the Prime Minister - that the road network required for the Kumbh should be taken up by the Centre. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari held a meeting on that issue," Mr Fadnavis said. He added eight major roads, including those from Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Gujarat, Mumbai, Dhule, and Palghar, which will be used heavily during the Kumbh, have been approved. "Some internal roads that fall under the Centre's purview were also discussed. Nitin Gadkari has approved almost all of these roads. 'Will Not Let Maoists Sleep Even During Monsoon': Amit Shah

Raipur: Delivering a firm message in Nava Raipur of Chhattisgarh on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to ending Maoism in India by March 31, 2026. "This time," he declared, "we will not let them sleep through the monsoon-there will be no further dialogue." In his address, HM Shah once again appealed to Maoist cadres to surrender and return to the mainstream, assuring them that the government would uphold all commitments under the state's surrender policy. "Many have already chosen peace," he said. "We will extend more than what was promised-but only if violence is forsaken and you join in shaping a new Chhattisgarh." He also urged the youth of Chhattisgarh to embrace the growing opportunities in forensic science, describing it as a 'sunrise industry' with immense potential for purposeful careers. His remarks came during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Naya Raipur. The Rs 268 crore initiative-Rs 145 crore for NFSU and Rs 123 crore for CFSL-is part of a national strategy to modernise the criminal justice system through evidence-based policing and forensic-led investigations. Calling it a landmark day for Chhattisgarh's justice infrastructure, the Home Minister said the new institutions would serve not only the state but all of central India. The NFSU transit campus will offer graduate and postgraduate courses from 2025-26 in various forensic disciplines, with HM Shah asserting that "an NFSU degree means a guaranteed job." The Centre aims to produce 32,000 forensic professionals annually through 26 campuses nationwide; seven have already been established, 10 are proposed, and nine are sanctioned. He highlighted the economic promise of the forensic sector, noting that the global forensic technology market-currently valued at $20 billion-is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 13 per cent and is projected to reach $55 billion by 2036, with India contributing 9 per cent to that growth. HM Shah further emphasised the importance of youth-led entrepreneurship in Chhattisgarh's development. Following the inauguration of the state's Innovation Hub (i-Hub), he pointed to the signing of a Rs 5,000 crore Memorandum of Understanding at an investment summit hosted by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. While welcoming industrial interest, the Home Minister stressed that true transformation would come only when young people become entrepreneurs and foster an industrial mindset. He described the i-Hub as a launchpad for innovation, offering technical and financial support to aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly in the MSME sector. "Industries are arriving, but Chhattisgarh will only witness real development when its youth lead the way," he said. The event also marked the 25th anniversary of Chhattisgarh's formation, which the state is observing as Atal Nirman Varsh. "Atal ji created Chhattisgarh, and under Narendra Modi ji, we will take it to new heights," HM Shah declared. He also praised the state government for its swift implementation of the newly enacted criminal laws-Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)-noting that these reforms aim to ensure justice is delivered within three years of filing an FIR. The Union Home Minister is on a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh.
