Himachal's sex ratio records improvement, touches 964 in 2024

The Himachal Pradesh government said on Sunday that the state saw a significant improvement in the sex ratio -- a rise from 947 in 2023 to 964 in 2024.
It attributed the improvement in gender equality to a growing societal shift towards valuing the girl child, reinforced by various schemes launched to support their well-being.
The sex ratio is the measure of the number of females per 1,000 males in a given population.
It serves as a crucial yardstick to measure gender equality.
The state government said that the financial support for the marriage of girls from economically weaker sections continues to be a key focus area.
Under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana, Rs 1,989.31 lakh has been provided as to help 3,956 girls at the time of their marriage.
Likewise, the Mukhyamantri Shagun Yojana has extended support to 12,192 girls, with financial assistance of Rs 3,779.52 lakh as 'shagun'.
These initiatives reflect the state's commitment to ensuring dignity and support for young women as they enter a new phase of life, an official statement said.
Recognising the right of widows to remarry and lead a respectful life, the government has also extended financial assistance through the Widow Remarriage Scheme.
Under this scheme, 239 women have been supported with an assistance of Rs 291.15 lakh, encouraging their reintegration into society with dignity and support.
The welfare of orphan children has been given special attention under the Mukhyamantri Sukh Aashray Yojana, through which Rs 25.98 crore has been provided to support their overall well-being.
For educational support, 9,859 children have received Rs 302.18 lakh under the scheme, helping them to grow and learn in a secure and nurturing environment.
Besides, the state government took a historic step by passing the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill of 1972.
This step is helping promoting gender equality and empowering women.
It addresses long-standing inequalities in property rights and shows the commitment towards social justice for women, the state government said.
The initiative reflects the vision of the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and is a bold step towards giving women greater financial independence and social empowerment across the state.
Apart from this, the state government has also started the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojana, under which it will deposit Rs 25,000 with an insurance company for each of the first two daughters born in a below poverty line (BPL) family.
The parents of the girl will receive a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh each.
The deposited amount will be handed over to the girl when she turns 18 or any time before she reaches the age of 27.
To support working women, the state government plans to build 13 working women hostels across key locations like Solan, Baddi, Palampur and Gagret, and the Medical Device Park in Solan.
These hostels, to be constructed in this fiscal at a cost of Rs 132 crore, will provide safe, affordable and convenient accommodation for employed women, enabling their economic independence.

The Telangana government will hold a public function in Hyderabad to mark the transfer of about Rs 9,000 crore to farmers' accounts in just nine days under the 'Rythu Bharosa' investment support scheme, state Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said. The event, which will be attended by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his cabinet colleagues, will take place on Tuesday evening near the Rajiv Gandhi statue outside the Telangana Secretariat complex, Rao added. The minister, who reviewed the arrangements for the event with officials on Monday, said Rs 9,000 crore has been transferred to farmers' accounts ahead of the monsoon to ensure they have funds to carry out agricultural activities. Recalling the farm loan waiver of Rs 70,000 crore during the UPA regime led by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rao said the present Congress government has already spent Rs 21,000 crore on loan waivers. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy launched the disbursal of funds under the 'Rythu Bharosa' scheme on June 16. He had announced that the government would transfer Rs 9,000 crore in nine days under the scheme, despite economic challenges. The 'Rythu Bharosa' scheme will benefit 70,11,984 farmers, covering 1.49 lakh acres, Reddy had said.

‘Admin has failed in Karnataka': Congress MLA Raju Kage threatens to quit, backs BR Patil's allegations on housing graft

Karnataka Congress MLA Raju Kage threatened to resign Monday, complaining of a lack of funds for development works and backed his party colleague B R Patil's allegations that houses under government schemes were being allotted in exchange for bribes. The four-time Congress MLA from Kagwad constituency alleged that the 'administration has completely failed in Karnataka.' His primary grouse was the delay in the release of Rs 13 crore meant for community halls in his constituency. 'It has been two years since the chief minister's special grant of Rs 25 crore was allocated (for Kagwad). Rs 12 crore was spent on roads, while Rs 13 crore was for community halls. In two years, have they released the Rs 13 crore? When did we give the proposal? Works orders have not been issued till now,' he said, asking whether it took two years for the government to release funds and take up works. 'The administration has completely failed in Karnataka. I am hurt. I am inclined towards resigning (as MLA). If I meet the CM in two days and resign, it won't be a surprise,' the MLA said. He also defended allegations by MLA Patil, the deputy chairman of the Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission, on corruption in housing schemes. In a leaked call with Housing Minister Zameer Khan's personal assistant Sarfaraz Khan, Patil was heard saying that houses under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation were allotted in return for bribes in his Aland constituency. The names of beneficiaries recommended by him were not considered while allotting around 950 houses, Patil had said. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar later condemned Patil's remarks and said that he and the chief minister will take up the matter with Patil. 'Whatever BR Patil said is not a lie. It's the truth,' Kage said on Monday, adding that he faced the same situation in his constituency. The remarks come at a time when the Congress government has been cornered over corruption allegations in connection with the Valmiki corporation and the allocation of sites by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). Responding to the remarks, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he would talk to Kage about his concerns. To a question on the special grant not being released, the chief minister said, 'Is there anything called CM's special fund in the budget? Whatever grants we give are called special grants. There is nothing called CM's grant.' Karnataka BJP, meanwhile, took to X to highlight that a ruling party legislator has threatened to resign by saying that the Congress government was not releasing grants for the development of his constituency. 'The biggest challenge for the Siddaramaiah government now is to quell the anger of its own party MLAs,' the BJP said, accusing the government of failing to provide justice to its legislators. Kage, a five-time MLA, had joined the Congress after leaving the BJP in 2019. Having won his first election on a Janata Dal (United) ticket in 2000, he was subsequently elected as a BJP legislator thrice – in 2004, 2008 and 2013. He won on a Congress ticket in 2023.
