West Wickham library transformation to be unveiled with café and business lounge
A major library transformation is set to be unveiled following a multi-million-pound refurbishment.
West Wickham Library will reopen to the public on Friday, June 27, following extensive works that include a modern café, business lounge, and an expanded children's library with outdoor space.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Bromley Council's executive councillor for renewal, recreation and housing, said: "I'm sure residents passing by during the works have been curious about this landmark building as it has taken form in the heart of West Wickham and I encourage residents to soon explore the impressive new facilities firsthand.
"We use libraries throughout our lives and not just for books, which is why the council have long supported the borough's beloved library network.
"Recent improvements across our libraries continue to drive their popularity, while ensuring they have the resources needed to support residents long into the future."

A highlight of the new library is the first Makerspace in a Bromley library, offering 3D printers, a die cutter, and sewing machines to support innovation and entrepreneurship.
This facility was made possible by more than £1 million in funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The library also features new bookable areas, including a community space and business lounge, public toilets on each floor, and additional work and study zones.
The project has already attracted industry recognition, having been shortlisted for Best Retrofit Project in the Building London Planning Awards.

To mark the reopening, Bromley Council is inviting residents to join in a day of activities on June 27, from 11.30am to 5pm.
The celebrations will include craft workshops, art sessions, and a children's event with author Peter Bently.
The Mayor will officially open the library at 11am.
The library will be operated by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), the charitable social enterprise that runs all of Bromley's libraries.
Rebecca Gediking, head of libraries at GLL, said: "It has been a privilege to work with the London Borough of Bromley to renovate and refurbish West Wickham Library.
"GLL libraries are some of the highest performing across the UK with Bromley Libraries lending the highest number of books in London for the last two years.
"We cannot wait to open the new West Wickham Library which captures all of the magic of the old library whilst inspiring and supporting a new generation of readers."
The refurbishment was delivered alongside the construction of 26 new affordable homes on a nearby car park site, part of the council's Bromley homes for Bromley people programme.
The housing development, which supported the library project, is expected to be completed later this year.
Three alternative council car parks are available within a ten-minute walk of the library.
Bromley Council's wider library improvement programme continues, with refurbishments currently underway at Chislehurst, Mottingham, and Orpington libraries.
Plans are also progressing to relocate Bromley Central Library to a new high street location, with further details to be announced in due course.

Huge 17.5-metre phone mast could be installed next to Beckenham flats
A new 17.5-metre phone mast could be coming to Beckenham. The mast, which would support six antennas and two dish antennas, is proposed for land adjacent to Flat 1, Beckenham Court, The Avenue. A phone mast, or cell tower, is a tall structure equipped with antennas and technology that send and receive radio signals, enabling mobile phone communication. The application, submitted by Cornerstone, also includes plans for two equipment cabinets at ground level and associated development works. New partnership in Baltimore expands access to free, hands-on crafting classes
A new partnership in Baltimore is expanding free, hands-on education for those who want to learn new skills like sewing, laser cutting, vinyl design and 3D printing. The University of Maryland, Baltimore's Office of Community and Civic Engagement launched a new partnership with the makerspace nonprofit Open Works. Open Works serves as the operating partner of the Steve and Mim Dubin Makerspace at UMB's Community Engagement Center (CEC) at 16 S Poppleton Street. It will provide technical support, training, instructors and curriculum. "We want to make maker space tools, resources and education accessible to all Baltimore City residents," said Dionne McConkey, UMB Office of Community and Civic Engagement Program Specialist. Increasing access to design tools in Baltimore The partnership increases access to fabrication and design tools like the Glowforge laser cutter, Cricut vinyl cutting machines and sewing machines. A new partnership in Baltimore is expanding free, hands-on maker education for those who want to learn new skills like sewing, laser cutting, vinyl design and 3D printing. University of Maryland, Baltimore Whether you're an experienced crafter or not, you can visit the makerspace, learn and get access to the tools you may need, according to Open Works Education Program Manager Josh Russakis. "Making is such a powerful way to unlock your own creative energy, whether you're brimming with it or it's just a little bit more buried down and latent," Russakis said. Classes are free and open to adults and seniors in the community to learn different crafting skills. "You're able to take the safety classes and not only learn how to make a product, but also learn how to safely use it and troubleshoot," said McConkey. After completing the safety classes, you can attend Open Build, where you can work on your own projects using the CEC Makerspace equipment. There are also other programs, including Make & Take, where you learn to operate tools like sewing machines and vinyl cutters while crafting a project with materials provided to take home. University of Maryland, Baltimore's Community Engagement Center Terry Burr has been coming to programs at the Community Engagement Center for years, and has attended events like crochet and candle making. "The staff, I mean, I'm one of their biggest cheerleaders because I know that they really have a heart for the people," he said. All the programs at UMB's Community Engagement Center are free for all community members, students and staff. The center offers fitness programs like weekly yoga, line dancing, Pilates, Zumba and community walks. It also offers workforce development programs, including one-on-one guidance for job searches and job training.
