'Pride is a blessing': Plattsburgh fest focuses on acceptance, unity
PLATTSBURGH — The Strand Center front lawn echoed with applause and cheers during this year's Pride Fest flag raising that celebrated community, acceptance and identity.
Friday's Pride event brought together attendees from all over, including families and local organizations that promoted healthy self-expression and LGBTQ+ acceptance in the North Country.
Emily Arriaga, a Plattsburgh local attending her first Pride in the city, described the event as "really great," and expressed a deep appreciation for the chance to celebrate openly in her hometown.
"Pride is being able to be who you are without any backlash," Arriaga said, a sentiment shared by many throughout the day.
Christopher T. Hathaway, a parent, attended to support his child.
"My daughter is gay and I am here to show my support for her and her girlfriend," he said.
Hathaway emphasized the importance of treating one another with respect as a family.
"We are all God's children and we should live like everyone is our brother and sister," he said. 'I am glad there aren't any anti-Pride people hanging out."
Jennifer Titus-Malone, who moved to the North Country from South Georgia, described Plattsburgh's Pride as a welcoming and supportive space with "a real sense of community."
"Pride means I am free to be myself in public," she said.
Titus-Malone reflected Friday on the culture shock here compared to her experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the South.
"Pride is an honor of everyone who has come before us," said Mario Chicas Chanduvi, who attended his first hometown Pride.
He emphasized how meaningful it was to see what the event has grown into.
"It is an honor to see," he said. "Growing up here, we didn't have these outlets. Pride is a blessing. Pride is an honor of everyone who has come before us. It means to be true to oneself, to be who you are without worrying."
Andrew Vernon, attending his first Pride event, liked seeing the support of the community in full effect.
"I have never been to a Pride event before, but I am really liking it so far," he said. "The vibes are great."
Crystal Collette, CEO of Planned Parenthood of North Country NY, said downtown was "filled with excitement, raw energy, and positivity" during the celebration.
Collette describes Pride as "a time to celebrate family, be yourself and come together," noting its importance during a time of national challenges for LGBTQ+ people.
She also expressed disappointment and shame for the federal government, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and community.
"Pride is especially important this year," Collette said. "Transgender people's entire existence is being invalidated by the actions of our federal government."
Alyssa O'Brien, co-owner of Whistle Stop Fusion Barbecue & Craft Mocktails, praised the event's strong turnout.
"This is our first Pride participating as a business," she said.
To O'Brien, Pride is about being able to be yourself.
'It isn't rocket science," she said. "Some people just want to be themselves, and be free to express themselves with the support of a community behind them."
She recalled attending her first Pride event in Plattsburgh more than 20 years ago, acknowledging that it can be intimidating at first, but encouraged anyone interested to just get out and be with people.
'Come out here, be around other people who think like you and act like you and look like you," O'Brien said.
A running theme throughout the event was acceptance, community and the power of standing together to celebrate Pride and to honor the original Stonewall protest that started it all.
Before raising the rainbow flag or Pride flag, which is a symbol of LGBTQ pride and LGBTQ social movements, on Friday, Collette introduced speakers Connie Mandeville, drag king of Haus of Starr, and Ali Webbinaro, North Country Regional Representative for Gov. Kathy Hochul.
This year's Pride event was hosted by The Strand Center for the Arts, in collaboration with Planned Parenthood of the North Country NY, the city of Plattsburgh, the Plattsburgh Queer Collective, Haus of Starr and the Alliance for Positive Health.

Lena Dunham: I Used ‘Too Much' to Take Stand on Abortion Rights During ‘Pivotal Moment'
Lena Dunham and husband Luis Felber's new Netflix series 'Too Much,' starring Megan Stalter, is set to drop July 10, and while the series' trailer promised laughs, Dunham said she also felt a responsibility to use the show to make a stand on women's rights. Speaking at a preview event (via The Hollywood Reporter), Dunham sported a Planned Parenthood pin and teased a 'Too Much' storyline that involves abortion. 'As an artist, I'm proud … that we get to be part of showing people all over the world a healthy woman making a super self actualized choice to get reproductive care [from] a really true, loving abortion provider, because those people are heroes,' Dunham said. 'So to be able to represent that was really, really important to me.' More from IndieWire 'Golden Girls' Writers Felt the Need to Stay in the Closet, Despite Show's Massive Gay Following 'Abbott Elementary' Star William Stanford Davis Wants More Actors to Say 'No' | 'What No One Tells You' The 'Girls' creator/star also told THR prior to the preview that she felt it necessary to shine a light on Planned Parenthood during 'this really pivotal moment.' 'While we know that television may not always change the dial on politics, what we can do is normalize very normal health procedures like abortion for our audience and especially let young people who may be watching and want to get care at Planned Parenthood know what a loving, safe place it is,' she said. Dunham has partnered with and advocated for Planned Parenthood in the past, including in 2017 when she released a star-studded animated tribute to the organization with participants like Meryl Streep, Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Lawrence, and America Ferrera. 'We've been working on the film for over a year in an attempt to shed light on Planned Parenthood's remarkable history and ongoing battle to keep serving the people who show up to their health centers every day of the year,' Dunham told THR at the time. 'I really think it's the best cartoon about the history of reproductive freedom ever made, but it may also be the only cartoon about the history of reproductive freedom ever made.' 'Too Much' finds Stalter played a workaholic that, in the wake of a failed relationship, moves to London to 'live a life of solitude like a Brontë sister.' Of course, things change when she meets a man (Will Sharpe) that challenges her new life plan. The stacked cast also stars Andrew Rannells and Rita Wilson, and features appearances from Andrew Scott, Naomi Watts, and Rhea Pearlman. Pride Fest in Irwin Park: ‘Homewood has my back'
Homewood's Amy Crump wore a blue T-shirt with a humorous message on the front. It said, 'I don't mind straight people as long as they act gay in public.' For the record, Crump is not gay and has been married for 38 years. However, she does have three gay children and that's one of the reasons she has attended all three of the Homewood-Flossmoor Pride Fests, including this year's version, which took place Friday at Irwin Park in Homewood. 'I'm all about supporting the people who are not the same as us,' she said. Crump said such pride events are a step in the right direction, even through there is still a lot of resistance when it comes to accepting gays and their lifestyles. 'We haven't come far enough but we are a lot farther than we were,' she said. 'But love is love is love.' Her daughter, 25-year-old Mica Crump, attended Friday's celebration and said she is proudly gay. She appreciates being able to come out to an event such as Pride Fest and feel comfortable. 'I love that this suburb is doing this,' she said. 'A lot of suburbs don't have this. It's something you see in the city. But Homewood has my back. I like it here.' Mica was active in Homewood-Flossmoor High School's Gay-Straight Alliance and said she found acceptance there. She liked Pride Fest is able to draw different types of people, including families. 'It makes me so happy to see the little kid wearing the pride merch,' Mica said. The fest featured food, drinks, vendors offering various services and music from The Divas and the Bel Canto Choir. Organizers said the first two Pride Fests drew between 1,200 and 1,400 patrons. There were a few speeches regarding the importance of the fest, inclusion and continuing the fight for acceptance. U.S. Robin Kelly, the 2nd District representative who announced in May that she is running for the U.S. Senate, spoke about not giving up the fight. 'Despite what looks like an ugly climate and despite what is an ugly climate, those of us out here and beyond are saying they are not taking this,' she said. 'Do me a favor. Do not get weary. That's what they want you to do. 'We have to fight the good fight and we have allies in congress. Many allies,' Kelly said. She said that everyone needs to stay together and respect each other. 'At the end of the day, we are all human beings,' she said. 'We all have something to contribute to this society. 'I want you to know I am fighting the good fight for you in Washington and I will continue to fight that fight,' she said. Park District Recreation Supervisor Zac Kerby urged patrons at the fest to have fun but to reflect on the struggles that gay and trans people have to go through. 'It's more than a celebration,' he said. 'It's a reminder of how far we've come and how much further we still have to go. 'Today, we honor the courage, the resilience and the joy of the LGBTQIA-plus community. Here in this space, everyone is seen and everyone is heard. Everyone is valued.' Homewood-Flossmoor Park Board member Angie Coderre wore a shirt that said 'Gay Mom' and although her two young children were not interested in addressing the crowd, she had good things to say about the success of Pride Fest. 'Today is always a special day for me personally,' she said. 'I came back here to raise my family with my wife and two kids. This always touches my heart in a way that is impossible without this community.' Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld gave a brief welcome and Flossmoor Mayor Michelle Nelson led crowd in a chant. 'Thank you for coming out to support individuals in their journey to find love, acceptance and resiliency,' Nelson said. 'That journey is so much better when you are not doing it alone. It's important to have the support of friends, family and neighbors.' The fest is a collaboration of the Park District and the two villages. Oralethea Davenport, who manages special events for the Park District, said the first two years were successful. 'It's one of our largest attended events,' she said. 'And this is an event for anyone and everyone. Families. Individuals. Supporters, Everyone. 'Anyone who wants to come out is more than welcome.'
