H5N1 Bird Flu Threat: Experts Sound Alarm Over Potential Pandemic As Infections Spread To All 50 US States

There is a possibility for virus adaptation and widespread infections among humans, they warned
The latest data also revealed that there are "ongoing mutations" across the circulating avian influenza viruses
The warning comes as the HHS pursues an overhaul of the US public health system
Virology experts from across 40 countries have sounded the alarm over the rising threat of H5N1 avian flu, a subtype of the influenza A virus that causes respiratory disease in birds (avian influenza or bird flu), and has now affected humans too.
In a commentary published this week in the medical journal The Lancet Regional Health – Americas, top virologists warned of the recent emergence of "highly pathogenic" H5N1 infections not only in dairy cows, but also in humans in the U.S.
Dozens of individuals affected: Virologists
According to the virologists, there have been over 995 dairy cows and at least 70 humans affected by the virus infections, including a severe case that became the "first reported H5N1-related death in the U.S."
The infections were recorded from 2024 through April 2025, "with the epizootic now present in all 50 states and human cases in 13 states and Canada."
They also cited a February report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that highlighted increased evidence of the virus's transmission to people.
"While the H5N1 outbreak in dairy cows and associated farm workers has not resulted in sustained human-to-human transmission, the possibility of virus adaptation and widespread infections requires proactive and vigilant measures," they pointed out.
They also urged leaders not just in the United States, but across the world, to improve preventive measures by utilizing all the knowledge painfully learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Evidence shows the virus is mutating
Aside from a growing number of people getting infected with the virus, sequencing data from circulating avian influenza viruses suggest "ongoing mutations and reassortment/mixing of genomic segments."
The widespread viral circulation has apparently affected not only dairy cows, but also other mammal species, including suspected cases in sea lions and minks.
"In mammals, these viruses may acquire mutations that increase their ability to transmit and replicate efficiently in mammals, eventually including humans," they warned, though they noted that such cases have yet to be demonstrated.
How worried should Americans be?
The virologists explained that in the past human H5N1 infections were primarily from bird-to-human transmission. However, recent data indicated that the situation had changed.
Furthermore, the proportion of undiagnosed human infections is currently unknown, which further raises the risk of exposure and eventual infection.
According to the experts, the following can play a role in the transmission of H5N1 to humans: Contaminated poultry products
Improper pasteurization and improper cooking of poultry and dairy products
Handling of infected poultry or cows
Direct contact with products from infected cows or poultry
Domestic pets that consume infected birds
The experts have urged leaders to improve various measures to prevent the bird flu's spread, including for biosecurity and biocontainment in farms, as well as awareness campaigns to keep the public informed about the avian influenza.
Warning comes at critical time in federal government
The virology warning comes at a time when concerns are rife over the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which recently saw staff reductions across a wide range of professionals, including researchers and medical experts.
The layoffs reportedly included some staff members of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who worked on the agency's response to the bird flu.
Despite the potential for a bird flu pandemic, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. seems committed to his initiative of overhauling the public health system and dismantling institutions he deems are not critical.

Brendan Gaughran of Liver Medic Calls for a More Holistic View of Health

Brendan Gaughran, molecular biologist and founder of the nutraceutical company Liver Medic, has a simple message for Americans trying to improve their health: "Keep going to your doctor, but don't stop there." "Doctors are essential. Everyone should go to their doctor, listen to their advice, and take medications as prescribed," Gaughran says. "But people should also understand that health is multifaceted. A growing body of research supports the idea that looking at your health holistically, whether it is nutrition, environment, lifestyle, or supplementation, can have a powerful effect." Gaughran isn't a medical doctor. He makes that point clear at the beginning of every lecture and podcast episode he delivers. He's a molecular cell biologist, researcher, and the founder of Liver Medic, a science-based supplement company focused on digestive, liver, and metabolic health. His role, he emphasizes, isn't to replace medical professionals, but to add context, insight, and education in areas where the traditional healthcare system often doesn't go deep enough. "In most medical schools, future doctors get less than 20 hours of nutrition training. Some get as little as two," he says. "So when patients ask about diet or lifestyle changes, many doctors just aren't equipped to answer thoroughly. That's not their fault. But it means people might not hear everything they need to make informed choices." Gaughran's perspective is rooted in science. He believes that a patient's recovery and resilience don't rely solely on prescriptions, but on understanding the bigger picture, especially how environmental and dietary inputs influence the body's systems. " Around 24% of Americans have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease," says Gaughran. "This, of course, goes up when we include those with alcohol-induced fatty liver disease. What some people may not realize is the connection between liver disease and other chronic ailments." For example, one issue he raises frequently is the mineral content of the modern American diet. "The most deficient nutrient in the average American is potassium. Magnesium is a close second," he says. "Magnesium is vital for heart health, cognitive function, and stress regulation. If we improved magnesium intake across the board, we could reduce a lot of chronic issues." Even when people eat a clean, whole-food diet, they may still be nutrient-deficient, he explains. That's because industrial farming has depleted the soil of essential minerals. "We've lost so many small farms, and what's left is often operated at industrial scale," Gaughran says. "To compensate for high-volume production and low margins, there's heavy reliance on antibiotics, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers. The result? Food that looks the same but contains fewer nutrients than it did 50 or 60 years ago." Gaughran is careful not to promote sweeping lifestyle changes without professional input. "Everything we recommend should be done with your doctor, not in place of them," he emphasizes. But for those searching for small, science-backed habits that may support their health, he offers a few starting points. Grow a garden, if possible. He says, "Even a few vegetables can make a difference. It reconnects you with what real food tastes like." Moreover, avoid seed oils. They're in nearly everything processed and are a major driver of inflammation. Reduce sugar and processed foods. "It's well-known advice, but still under-practiced. These things wreak havoc on metabolic health," Gaughran states. Source produce locally and look for food grown in mineral-rich soil. It makes a difference in nutrient content. Lastly, consider smart supplementation. "In cases where critical minerals like potassium or magnesium are missing, even from a healthy diet, supplements may help. Just make sure they're ethically produced and tested. And again, always consult your healthcare provider," Gaughran emphasizes. Liver Medic has built a reputation for delivering evidence-based supplements focused on liver function, gut health, and adrenal support. These are core components of what Gaughran refers to as the body's 'detoxification engine.' While many people think of the liver only in the context of alcohol or disease, Gaughran says it plays a much broader role in maintaining energy, metabolism, and overall well-being. His company is part of a growing segment of the health industry focused on nutraceuticals, products that fall somewhere between nutrition and pharmaceuticals. Liver Medic's approach, he says, is to offer high-quality, research-driven options that support the body's natural systems, often in collaboration with traditional care. Beyond Liver Medic, Gaughran even launched a podcast with co-host Dr. Jason DuBois, a clinical immunologist and transplant therapy specialist. Titled UnconventionalMedicine , the show features interviews with thought leaders across pediatric care, metabolic health, agriculture, and beyond. Its aim is simple: provide an accessible, patient-friendly space for exploring root causes of illness and actionable alternatives. "Most of our listeners are people who've done everything they thought they could, gone to the doctor, taken the meds, and they're still sick. They're just looking for something else," Gaughran says. "That's not a rejection of medicine. It's a search for context, understanding, and sometimes answers that haven't been obvious." He further states, "It's okay to ask more questions. It's okay to explore nutrition, environment, stress, and supplementation, especially when done thoughtfully and with professional guidance." For anyone frustrated with their health, curious about alternative approaches, or simply looking to deepen their understanding, Gaughran and Liver Medic offer one clear message: "You're not alone, and there's more to explore."

UK MPs Eye Decriminalising Abortion For Women In All Cases

UK MPs are expected to vote Tuesday on an overhaul of abortion laws in England and Wales which would end contentious prosecutions of women for terminating a pregnancy. Currently, a woman can face criminal charges for choosing to end a pregnancy after 24 weeks or without the approval of two doctors, under laws which technically still carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The issue has gained attention in the UK due to recent court cases. In one a woman was cleared by a jury at trial, while another was released from prison on appeal. A proposal put forward by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi seeks to change the law to ensure that no woman would be committing an offence by terminating her own pregnancy at any time. "Women are currently being arrested from hospital bed to police cell and facing criminal investigations on suspicion of ending their own pregnancy," Antoniazzi told AFP. "My amendment would put a stop to this," she said, adding it was "the right amendment at the right time". Abortion in England and Wales is a criminal offence under the Offences Against the Person Act, passed in 1861 during the Victorian age and which carries carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The Abortion Act 1967 made terminations legal in certain circumstances, including by permitting it up to 23 weeks and six days of gestation if done by an authorised provider. Abortions are allowed in limited circumstances after this time, such as if the mother's life is in danger or there is a "substantial risk" the child could be born with a serious disability. An update to the law introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic allows women to take abortion pills at home up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy. In May, Nicola Packer was acquitted after taking prescribed abortion medicine when she was around 26 weeks pregnant, beyond the legal limit of 10 weeks for taking such medication at home. The 45-year-old told jurors during her trial, which came after a four-year police investigation, that she did not realise she had been pregnant for so long. "It was horrendous giving evidence, absolutely awful," she told The Guardian newspaper last month. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has however called the proposed amendment "the greatest threat to unborn babies in decades". Antoniazzi's amendment would not change any of the laws regarding the provision of abortion services, including the time limits. And anyone assisting a woman in getting an abortion outside the remits of the law, such as medical practitioners, would still be liable for prosecution. Some 50 organisations, including abortion providers, medical colleges, and women's rights groups, have backed the amendment. They say six women have appeared in court in England charged with ending or attempting to end their own pregnancy outside abortion law in the last three years. Carla Foster was jailed in 2023 for illegally obtaining abortion tablets to end her pregnancy when she was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant. The Court of Appeal eventually suspended her sentence. Some 140 MPs in the 650-seat parliament have publicly backed the change. It "has widespread support from MPs across the political spectrum and I am optimistic the Commons will support it," said Antoniazzi. Lawmakers will have a free vote, meaning they can decide based on their views, not what their party tells them. Northern Ireland decriminalised abortion for women in 2019. Scotland is currently reviewing its abortion laws.

RFK Jr. Fact-Checked for Spouting 'Dangerous Falsehoods' About Vaccines on Fox News: 'I Have Receipts'

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a series of inaccurate claims about vaccines during a Fox News appearance Thursday. Kennedy claimed that "97% of the people on the [CDC vaccine advisory] committee had conflicts of interest," that children receive "between 69 and 92" mandatory vaccines, and that "none of them have been safety tested" — aside from the COVID-19 vaccine. He also asserted that vaccines are designed to "deregulate" the immune system, linking them to an "epidemic of chronic disease." Dr. Jake Scott, a doctor specializing in infectious disease and associate professor at Stanford Medical School, issued a detailed rebuttal on social media, accusing Kennedy of spreading "egregious, dangerous falsehoods" and backing up his criticism with data from peer-reviewed studies and CDC records. "Fox News might not fact-check him, but I will," Scott wrote. "I've reviewed the trials. I've catalogued them. I have receipts." Scott went claim by claim. Kennedy said 97% of CDC vaccine committee members had conflicts of interest, but didn't cite where he obtained that figure. Scott refuted the claim, sharing findings from a Reuter's investigation which found that while 41% of members received a form of industry payment, it was mostly in small sums for travel or meals. Furthermore, the CDC has stringent guidelines in place requiring recusals for any conflicts. Even the Fox anchor commented that Kennedy's claim that children now receive between 69 and 92 mandatory vaccines sounded quite high. It was disputed by Scott as well, who noted that vaccine mandates are set by states, and most states mandate slightly over 30 immunizations. Regarding Kennedy's claim that no vaccines other than the Covid vaccine have gone through placebo-controlled trials, Scott said, "One of the most misleading claims I've ever seen a government official make on national television." He went on to link to a database that contains 164 placebo-controlled vaccine trials, and specified at least one example for every routine childhood vaccine. Kennedy said, "Nobody has any idea what the risk profiles are on these products," which Scott countered, noting that 90% of vaccine studies include safety outcome reports, and listing four methods of post-licensure safety monitoring. He cited three instances where safety issues with vaccines were discovered and acted upon. Finally, Scott dismissed Kennedy's claim that "vaccines deregulate the immune system." "This isn't science; it's a scary-sounding buzzword," Scott wrote. "Vaccines don't 'deregulate' anything. They educate the immune system through targeted antigen exposure so it can defend against real pathogens later." Scott emphasized that while no medical intervention is risk-free, the evidence overwhelmingly supports the safety and public health benefits of routine childhood immunizations. "As a father of two, I'm extremely grateful," he added, citing dramatic drops in child deaths and disease since the introduction of vaccines like Hib, hepatitis B, and rotavirus. Kennedy's comments have drawn condemnation from health experts and lawmakers alike, with many warning that misinformation of this nature could further erode trust in lifesaving vaccines.
