Although Robert De Niro was passed over for The Godfather, his starring role in the sequel turned out to be the offer he couldn't refuse.
While paying tribute to director Francis Ford Coppola with the AFI Life Achievement Award, he and co-star Al Pacino reminisced about their time with the filmmaker on his seminal mafia film franchise.

'Francis, thank you for not casting me in The Godfather,' said De Niro during Saturday's gala at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. 'It was the best job I ever, never got. And it meant I was available for The Godfather Part II. Francis, you changed my career, you changed my life. We're all here tonight because of you. We love you.'
Following Pacino's breakout performance as Michael Corleone in 1972's adaptation of Mario Puzo's book, the 1974 sequel followed the parallel paths of father and son with De Niro as a young immigrant Vito Corleone (portrayed in the first film by Marlon Brando). The performance won the actor his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Pacino prefaced his tribute with a quote from Coppola himself. ''The things you do when you're young that you get fired for, are the same things that years later, they give you lifetime achievement awards for,'' he said.
'You know, none of us were fired from The Godfather, but some of us got pretty close,' added Pacino as the audience laughed at his self-deprecating nod. 'I got the closest. And Francis just fought for us all the time. He fought for his film and his vision, which he always does. Yet, it could have gotten him fired. Everything was a firing threat. It could have had all of us fired, but it didn't. Now, years later, here we all are to celebrate him for it. So, thank you Francis. Thank for believing in me even more than I believed in myself. I am eternally grateful in kind to be part of your Godfather family.'
Filmmaking peers like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Spike Lee and more were also on hand to celebrate Coppola, as well as collaborators like Adam Driver, Elle Fanning and Diane Lane.
The Life Achievement Award is AFI's highest esteem for a career in film. Coppola's predecessors include Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Diane Keaton and John Williams.
Coppola's The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and Apocalypse Now are ranked among history's greatest films in AFI's 100 Years…100 Movies list. A six-time Academy Award winner, his other iconic feature credits, as writer, director and/or producer, include Patton, American Graffiti, The Conversation, The Outsiders and Bram Stoker's Dracula, to name just a few.
The evening earned a record $2.5 million for AFI and will be broadcast on TNT on June 18 at 10pm ET/PT with an encore on TCM July 31 at 8pm ET/PT.

Tributes paid to healthcare worker and Kate Nash 'superfan' who has died at 22

A mother has paid tribute to her beloved daughter and Kate Nash "superfan", who has died at the age of 22. "Fun-loving" Laura Lily-Anne Ray, of Bitterne Park, was a healthcare assistant in Marchwood whose death has left friends and family devastated. Mum Janina said Laura would be missed by everyone who knew her - with singer Kate Nash, best known for her track Foundations, penning a letter of condolence to the family. The singer's track Ray, released in 2024 as part of 9 Sad Symphonies, was created for Laura's 18th birthday and takes its name from Laura. "She loved getting tattoos, loved EastEnders. She was just a very special individual. "We are devastated, it isn't easy. We have two young boys, so we are having to keep going for them." Laura, a former pupil at Bitterne Park School, was also a member of Westfield Productions and loved performing in pantos, dancing and singing. Janina says Laura had suffered with her mental health, but wanted to use her experience to try and help others, adding: "She excelled at her work and she absolutely loved it. "Laura and I were inspired by Kate Nash at the first gig we saw her at Brighton on her Mental tour. "She spoke so openly about mental health, how it was ok to have feelings and to talk." The family were touched to receive a card and flowers from Kate Nash - who Laura first saw in around 2017 - and condolences from fellow fans as far away as America. In the card, Kate Nash called Laura a "shining light", adding: "I was so proud to call her a fan. "I remember the first time I saw her, she showed me so much love and support. "She will be so missed, and I will never forget her." Janina adds that Laura had two sphinx cats, Ronnie and Rocko, who are up for rehoming as the family cannot care for them. A card and flowers from Kate Nash, lots from work and individual messages," added Janina. "We were supposed to be going to Portugal next Saturday together as a family. She was really looking forward to it." The last time Laura's mum saw her in person was at a family outing at Victoria Country Park on the Thursday before she died. The family spent time enjoying ice creams and making TikTok videos on the beach. Staff at Marchwood Priory, where she worked, have said she was passionate, and "brilliant with the patients and a real team player". She had been living with her grandfather in Bassett, where she sadly took her own life on May 26, her family said. Donations in memory of Laura can be made to MIND. An event is planned to raise money and pay tribute to Laura at the Hop Inn, Woodmill Lane, from 6pm today. Call Samaritans on 116 123 for support.

Love Island USA Season 7 Claims Over 1 Billion Minutes Streamed

is taking over our lives yet another summer, and we can't be mad about it. Season 7 is riding the high of last year's fan-favorite group of Islanders, and they had big shoes to fill. Thankfully, the singles came to Fiji with a mission — make connections and stir up a little drama. From Huda Mustafa and Jeremiah Brown's whirlwind relationship to Ace Greene and Amaya Espinal's frenemy-ship, there's been a lot to take in so far. Apparently, fans are so obsessed with Love Island that we're watching a record-breaking amount of episodes. In a span of less than a week, Love Island USA had 1.2 billion minutes streamed across the nine episodes available, Deadline reports. Luminate looked at streaming minutes from June 6 to 12 to determine the total. It's the second most-watched streaming show on TV. So, fans are obsessing over tuning in to see what tricks Ariana Madix has up her sleeves next. That definitely makes us feel better about our TV watching habits. It's hard to believe that fans have already watched a billion minutes, and the season hasn't even been on for three weeks yet. That means thousands of people have witnessed antics like Taylor Williams bursting out of his straps after being seduced by Olandria Carthen. It's also a whole lot of people who have seen Huda crash out. Yikes. It took Season 6 nearly a month to crack a billion minutes viewed, so Season 7 is off to a strong start. Surely, with the way things are going in the villa these days, it won't take us long to rack up another billion minutes on this season alone. Love Island USA Season 7 is available to stream on Peacock. TELL US – ARE YOU SURPRISED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE TUNING INTO LOVE ISLAND SEASON 7? DO YOU PREFER SEASON 6 OR 7 OF THE SHOW SO FAR?
