Renault Filante Record 2025 Aims to Set Efficiency Records This Year
The Renault Filante Record 2025 is a crazy-looking concept car that is also functional and will attempt to set efficiency and range records this year.
The thin body is fashioned from carbon fiber and designed to cut through the air with minimal drag.
The Filante features steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, extensive use of lightweight materials, and unique friction-reducing tires from Michelin.
French automakers are known for eccentric designs, and Renault has cooked up something particularly kooky for 2025. This torpedo-like vehicle is the Filante Record 2025, an electric concept car inspired by a series of record-setting vintage Renaults. But this isn't some static flight of fantasy. Not only is the Filante operational, but Renault plans to use it to set a new record for electric efficiency and range this year.
The Filante Record 2025 is rooted in history. Its purpose and its aerodynamic bodywork reference a trio of old Renaults that set records in their own day. The Filante's thin fuselage mimics that of the 1925 40 CV des Records and 1934 Nervasport des Records, while the name and curvy fenders draw upon the 1956 Etoile Filante. Renault partnered with Ligier Automotive—which builds endurance race cars and is loosely tied to the F1 team from the '70s and '80s—for the development of the Filante Record 2025.
The streamlined Ultraviolet Blue body stretches 201.6 inches long but just 46.9 inches tall, roughly 14 inches longer than a Lexus LC500 but six inches shorter. The lengthy hood curves rearwards to a glass bubble that recalls the cockpit of a fighter jet. The front and rear wheel fairings sit independently of the body for aerodynamic efficiency and are linked back to the main structure by a few black struts. Renault aims to conduct wind-tunnel tests this spring to further hone the bodywork.
Renault describes the Filante Record 2025 as a "laboratory on wheels," fitting the concept with a variety of futuristic technologies. Renault says the prototype weighs around 2205 pounds thanks to a lightweight chassis made from a combination of aluminum, carbon, and steel alloys. The body is fashioned from carbon fiber, and Renault also 3-D-printed certain parts using Scalmalloy, a high-strength aluminum alloy. Computer programs allowed Renault to reduce the amount of material used to only the most crucial sections needed to maintain rigidity.
Under the dramatic bodywork lies an 87.0-kWh battery, which Renault notes is the same capacity as the pack found in the road-going Scenic E-Tech SUV. Renault says the cells are integrated directly into the battery pack, eliminating intermediate modules and keeping the battery's weight to around 1323 pounds.
The cockpit is snug, holding just one seat. That seat is made from stretched canvas over a series of thin carbon blades, contributing to the low curb weight. Renault compares the setup to a hammock and says it adapts to the shape of the driver's body. An ultra-thin screen wrapped around a cylinder sits ahead of the driver to show important information and control various functions. Renault also touts an air-circulation system that will ventilate the cabin without adding parts and weight.
The party trick is the steering wheel, which is, in fact, not actually a wheel. Instead, the Filante features a yolk-like setup with two handles that control the acceleration, braking, and steering. The Filante has both steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems, relying on an electronic link between the driver's controls and the wheels and brakes. The Filante Record also features unique friction-reducing tires from Michelin that should help maximize the electric range.
Renault will show off the Filante Record 2025 at the Rétromobile show in Paris starting on February 5 before the car embarks on its attempt to set a new record for efficiency in the first half of 2025.

Renault's Deepening Romance With Geely Beats Marrying Nissan
Luca de Meo's imminent departure from Renault SA to fashion house Kering SA raises an important question: How should a profitable yet subscale French automaker ensure its long-term resilience in an era of cutthroat competition and rapid technological change? One plausible route open to Renault is to become more Chinese; it can do that by deepening an already flourishing partnership with billionaire Li Shufu's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., whose sprawling international stable of brands includes Lotus, Zeekr and Polestar. While there are risks in embracing a new Asian partner so soon after an alliance with Nissan Motor Co. imploded (that quarter-century union is now being partially unwound), Renault should consider an even more radical step: a merger with one of Geely's core assets, Swedish automaker Volvo Car AB.

Netflix analysts turn heads with stock price target updates
Bonjour tout le monde, comment aimez-vous Netflix maintenant? Okay, enough with the high school French. We're going bilingual because the world's largest streaming service recently unveiled a deal under which it will offer live broadcasts and on-demand content from the French broadcaster TF1 starting in summer 2026. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter "This is a first-of-its-kind partnership that plays to our strengths of giving audiences the best entertainment alongside the best discovery experience," Greg Peters, Netflix's co-CEO, said in a statement. "By teaming up with France's leading broadcaster we will provide French consumers with even more reasons to come to Netflix every day and to stay with us for all their entertainment." Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images TF1 reaches 58 million monthly viewers through its broadcast channels and serves 35 million users on its TF1+ streaming service. The company's CEO, Rodolphe Belmer, who sat on Netflix's board from 2018 until 2022 before taking the helm at TF1, said the alliance would "enable our premium content to reach unparalleled audiences and unlock new reach for advertisers within an ecosystem that perfectly complements our TF1+ platform." Last year, Netflix partnered with France's Newen Studios and TF1 to co-produce the streamer's first-ever daily drama series for France, "Tout Pour La Lumière" ("All for Light"), which is set in the world of music and dance, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "This is a very innovative deal" with "nothing of the sort elsewhere," Enders Analysis analyst François Godard said. "It pivots Netflix into aggregation." More Streaming: Walt Disney offers new perks for Disney+ membersBank of America sends strong message on NetflixNetflix has a genius plan to find its next hit show Scott Galloway, a New York University professor and a podcaster, noted recently that by expanding production globally, taking advantage of broadband technology, and capitalizing on inexpensive funding, Netflix was able to make large-scale investments similar to Amazon's (AMZN) strategy, leaving competitors unable to keep pace. Craig Hallum analyst Jason Kreyer said that Magnite (MGNI) , the world's largest independent sell-side advertising company, struck an agreement with TF1 just nine months ago to bolster programmatic demand, according to The Fly. Programmatic advertising uses software and algorithms to buy ad inventory in real time, often through auctions, rather than through manual negotiations between advertisers and publishers. Craig Hallum said that this relationship represented a ramp in its monetization potential with Netflix by bringing an influx of live content to the Netflix ecosystem, where Magnite remains the exclusive supply-side platform. The firm said that it expected a seamless transition to monetizing this inventory on Netflix. Craig-Hallum said its checks from Cannes in France have noted a material increase in interest and active discussions between these broadcasters and both publishers like Netflix and tech partners like Magnite. The firm sees this trend adding yet another set of tailwinds to the Magnite story. Craig-Hallum has a buy rating and a $14 price target on Magnite's shares. Netflix shares are up 38% this year and up nearly 82% from this time in 2024. Pivotal Research raised its price target on Netflix to a Wall-Street-high $1,600 from $1,350 and affirmed a buy rating on the shares. Related: Veteran trader turns heads with Netflix comments The investment firm said it moved from a year-end 2025 to a year-end 2026 target price and increased its multiple based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, citing increasing confidence in the company's "dominant market positioning." Netflix remains underpenetrated globally, Pivotal said. The Los Gatos, Calif., company offers an "extremely compelling" price-to-entertainment value, boosted by its advertising-supported offering, which should enable it to continue to generate solid growth in subscribers and average revenue per user, Pivotal said. The firm continues to view management's aspirational goal of a $1 trillion valuation by 2030 as reasonable. It's currently a bit more than half that at $520 billion. Wells Fargo raised its price target on Netflix to $1,500 from $1,222 given its opportunity path, while affirming an overweight rating on the shares. High-value short-form content could be Netflix's next big move with exclusive creator deals, WFC said. Wells Fargo estimates incremental engagement at an attractive return on investment. It's a third pillar of growth after sports and ads, the firm said. Netflix, scheduled to report quarterly results on July 17, said in May that it was testing a short-form-video feature. In 2021 the platform rolled out a TikTok-inspired feature called "Fast Laughs," which focused on funny clips, Tech Crunch reported. This new test aims to reach a broader audience beyond just comedy fans and will be more personalized. The new mobile-only vertical feed enables users to easily scroll through clips of its original titles. Within this feed, users can tap on buttons to watch the entire show or movie immediately, save it to their "My List," or share it with friends. 1982 BMW 528i on Bring a Trailer Is the Nicest We've Seen
Here's a fine-looking early BMW 5-series that checks a lot of boxes. It's not an M5, but it does feature an inline-six, a five-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive. It also boasts exceptionally low mileage and condition to match. The E28 BMW 5-series is mostly known as the debut of the BMW M5. That car is by now a legend, noted for its mighty 3.5-liter inline-six. If it's a racehorse, here's a car from the same bloodline that's a bit more domesticated, but still loves to trot. Bring a Trailer This 528i is the underlying sports sedan that made the first M5 so good, and this 1982 model up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) looks to be an exceptional example of the breed. Sold new in France, it's got an M30 2.8-liter inline-six with higher compression than what we received in the U.S.—mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It also sports the crisply elegant European bumpers rather than the overlarge U.S. units. And its 15K kilometers on the odometer translates to a freakishly low U.S. equivalent of less than 10,000 miles. Ooh, and those French selective yellow headlights, that's a nice touch. Courtesy: Bring a Trailer This car was bought last year on Bring a Trailer by the sort of owner who seems particularly fastidious. They've gone through the engine bay and cabin and removed any aftermarket parts, for instance replacing the Kenwood door speakers with factory BMW units. There is no A/C, but the seller is throwing in a factory A/C system from another car, which the new owner could have installed. Courtesy: Bring a Trailer The 5-series of this generation is such a overlooked machine, one that puts the spirit of the original 2002tii into a discreet business suit. The 2.8-liter inline-six produces a plentiful 170 horsepower, and it loves to rev. An E28 is tiny next to a modern 5-series, and the experience of hurrying it down a two-lane road while looking out through that expansive greenhouse is a wonderful one. Courtesy: Bring a Trailer The very low mileage does mean that this car is something to be reserved for special occasions, but it should be faithful even if it sits around a bit. These are far simpler and more durable cars than electronics-heavy later Bimmers, and that inline-six doesn't have the valve adjustment schedule of the M5's motor. This is the best of Bavaria, and with no reserve, it's going home with a new owner. The auction ends on June 25.
