M-E's Klinger earns News 34 Sports' Athlete of the Week
ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Your winner of this week's News34 Sports Athlete of the Week is Cooper Klinger.
The Spartans' baseball standout would record an RBI in both sectional finals games against Owego, which allowed the team to win them both in nail-biting fashion, 2-1 and 4-3. Since then, he has also helped M-E reach a final four appearance as they chase back-to-back state championships, having topped Section VII's Peru 7-4 in a game where he had a hit, run, and RBI.

The summer for Texas A&M football has given Aggie fans plenty to be excited about, especially with how well the program has been recruiting for the 2026 class. Paired with a veteran team ranked in the top five for returning production, it's easy to see why some in the media are high on the Maroon & White next season. Over the last decade, Texas A&M has fallen into a frustrating cycle: a strong start to the season, finishing with eight wins, securing a solid recruiting class, raising fans' hopes, only to end with another eight-win campaign. A true live-action version of 'wash, rinse, repeat' that's left the fan base feeling apathetic. Although A&M is currently in the 'solid recruiting' phase of this cycle, the team under second-year head coach Mike Elko seems to carry a different vibe. That's been evident not only among current players but also among recruits the Aggie staff has connected with over the past season. Positive energy is great for recruiting and roster retention, but the ultimate question is whether that energy will translate to success on the field. For too long, Texas A&M has been on the outside looking in, despite boasting some of the best facilities in the country and consistent media hype from across the college football world. We're back in that familiar spot, but this year, something feels different. Does Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed need to carry the 2025 offense?
Texas A&M's 2025 season will depend on starting quarterback Marcel Reed significantly improving as a pocket passer. Still, for those who have been paying attention this offseason, the Aggies return all five starting offensive linemen, while adding 14 players from the transfer portal, led by former North Carolina State wide receiver KC Concepcion. Still, look past our coverage at Aggies Wire and other dedicated Texas A&M sites. You'll find narratives disregarding the rest of the offensive strengths, especially the O-line and the loaded running back room led by senior star Le'Veon Moss, placing all the pressure on Reed's shoulders, which doesn't make sense in OC Collin Klein's system. On Sunday, Michael Bratton and Cousin Shane of That SEC Podcast predicted Texas A&M's 2025 record, stating that the "best case scenario" would be for the Aggies to finish 10-2 or 9-3, which would likely place them in the College Football Playoff conversation. This, of course, resulted in rival fan bases responding to the positive A&M take, including Texas fan @ShinerRyan on X, feeling Bratton's prediction was "quite optimistic": "That is quite optimistic. With likely losses at ND and Texas, there is no room for error. I just don't see it unless Reed becomes a stud at the QB position. I think if they hit 8-4, Elko has done a solid job and can build on that. 9-3 and you extend the man." This appears to be a reference to Texas A&M extending former head coach Jimbo Fisher after the 2020 season. However, I'm referring to this comment because of his emphatic stance that Marcel Reed needs to be essentially the best player on the field for the Aggies to have a chance. Bratton quickly responded, pointing out Texas A&M's strength in the trenches, and accurately noting that while Reed must imrpove as a passer, he doesn't need to be perfect given the Aggies' running back room and deep wide receiver rotations with the additions of Concepcion, Mario Craver, and 2025 five-star signee Jerome Myles. "I'm not sure why Marcel Reed has to carry Texas A&M given the Aggies bring back the SEC's most experienced O-Line and top 4 leading rushers A&M's defense has to get better — defense cost them Carolina, Auburn & Southern Cal games" Bratton is also correct in pointing out that Texas A&M's offense wasn't the primary reason for the 1-4 finish las season, as the secondary, which also should improve with Mike Elko calling defensive plays, and new defensive assistant Lyle Hemphill, who was brought in to fix several coverage issues that plagued the team down the stretch. Again, Reed must improve, but he was never the primary cause of the Aggies' skid, and has put in the work this offseason to work on his release, touch, and accuracy, which are essential for running Klein's passing attack that relies on hitting tight windows, thereby opening up the run game. 2026 4-star safety out of Mississippi has announce his commitment date
After landing 2026 four-star safety Chace Collins, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko is looking to add at least one more safety in the 2026 cycle. Elko is now wholly focused on landing four-star safety Tylan Wilson, who is coming off his official visit to Texas A&M on July 13 and has already received multiple predictions to land with Texas A&M over the past week. On Sunday, it was revealed that Wilson will announce his commitment on July 18 and will choose between Arkansas, Clemson, and Texas A&M. His commitment will reportedly be streamed, hosted by @Bingomediallc, along with special coverage by WXXV News 25. Wilson had been a longtime Clemson target, but after his Texas A&M OV, Elko and his defensive back staff, especially Jordan Peterson, likely sealed the deal with the Mississippi standout. Wilson's versatility in coverage and ability to play in the box as a hybrid linebacker are key to his development as a productive starter in the SEC. As I've stated throughout the offseason, in the new college football landscape, solid safety play is in high demand. Still, Texas A&M's 2026 safety rotation will lose one starter in senior free safety Bryce Anderson to graduation, while sophomore Myles Davis and freshman Rashad Johnson represent the future starting rotation, which will include Collins and, possibly, Wilson. Standing at 6-2 and 185 pounds, Wilson is currently positioned as 247Sports' 221st-ranked prospect in the 2026 cycle, the 17th-ranked safety, and the 10th-ranked prospect in Mississippi.
