Can Texas A&M Football finally break the eight-win cycle in 2025?
The summer for Texas A&M football has given Aggie fans plenty to be excited about, especially with how well the program has been recruiting for the 2026 class. Paired with a veteran team ranked in the top five for returning production, it's easy to see why some in the media are high on the Maroon & White next season.
Over the last decade, Texas A&M has fallen into a frustrating cycle: a strong start to the season, finishing with eight wins, securing a solid recruiting class, raising fans' hopes, only to end with another eight-win campaign. A true live-action version of 'wash, rinse, repeat' that's left the fan base feeling apathetic.
Although A&M is currently in the 'solid recruiting' phase of this cycle, the team under second-year head coach Mike Elko seems to carry a different vibe. That's been evident not only among current players but also among recruits the Aggie staff has connected with over the past season.
Positive energy is great for recruiting and roster retention, but the ultimate question is whether that energy will translate to success on the field. For too long, Texas A&M has been on the outside looking in, despite boasting some of the best facilities in the country and consistent media hype from across the college football world.
We're back in that familiar spot, but this year, something feels different. That SEC Football Podcast recently previewed the Aggies' upcoming season and shared slightly differing opinions on what lies ahead.

Four-star WR Devin Carter stands firm in commitment to Auburn football
Recruiting noise surrounding the Auburn Tigers has been at a minimum lately as the program has landed just one commitment since April, and recently lost a four-star linebacker that caused their ranking to plummet. However, Auburn fans received good news this weekend as one of its top pledges to its 2026 class reaffirmed his commitment to the program following his recent official visit. Devin Carter, a four-star wide receiver from Douglasville, Georgia, and an Auburn pledge since January, took his official visit to the Plains over the weekend, where he told reporters such as Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live that he remains locked in with Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. Carter visited Georgia, Florida State, and North Carolina officially, but says that he saved his "best visit for last" and that he remains as committed as he was when he announced his pledge in January. 'I feel the same, I'm locked in. Same as I was months ago when I committed. This was just reassurance that it's home. I had a great time here and I love it here. Coach (Marcus) Davis and his belief in me. Coach (Hugh) Freeze and his belief in me also. Just the whole coaching staff and the way they pour into me and express the way that they feel about me. They're going to use me well here and I'm going to make plays here in Jordan-Hare Stadium. We're going to be special here. And Deuce Knight, I got to workout with him last night. We went to the field and ran some routes. That's my guy. He's one of them ones. We're going to be special.' Advertisement Carter says that Knight having one year of development before he gets to campus will be vital, and it is a process that he is happy to be a part of. Carter also says that he is joining the Tigers' coaching staff as well as several top 2026 commits in recruiting four-star quarterback Landon Duckworth, who was also on the Plains for a weekend visit. Carter is the No. 15 wide receiver of the 2026 class and is the No. 13 player from Georgia according to 247Sports. He is the second-highest rated commit to Auburn's 2026 haul, trailing four-star EDGE Hezekiah Harris. Four-star wide receiver Devin Carter backs off Auburn pledge, commits to Florida State
At the beginning of his Auburn tenure, head coach Hugh Freeze was known for "flipping" recruits from other programs. Entering year three, it appears that several programs are out for revenge. Monday, Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported that four-star wide receiver Devin Carter has de-committed from Auburn and, in turn, has committed to Florida State. Carter decommitted from Mike Norvell and the Seminoles in January 2024 and announced his commitment to Auburn nearly one year later on Jan. 11 of this year. Still, Florida State kept recruiting Carter, and their persistence paid off. Advertisement The move from Auburn to Florida State comes one week after Carter took his official visit to Auburn, where he told reporters that he was "locked in" with Auburn. Trade proposal lands Lakers game-changing two-way guard from Celtics
Other than a starting-caliber center, the Los Angeles Lakers need one or two viable two-way players at the wing or guard positions. With the NBA Finals now over and the draft just a couple of days away, they can now truly get down to business and upgrade their roster. One concern is the lack of defense and athleticism that their starting backcourt of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves has. Some have suggested trading Reaves for a more athletic two-way guard or wing, while others may feel the Lakers could win the championship with Reaves simply reassigned to a sixth-man role. One proposed trade that appeared in a Fadeaway World article has the Lakers acquiring Derrick White from the Boston Celtics for forward Rui Hachimura, wing Dalton Knecht and a 2031 first-round draft pick. Via Fadeaway World: "By acquiring Derrick White, the Lakers would vault their backcourt defense into elite territory," wrote Eddie Bitar. "In 2024-25, White averaged 1.1 blocks and 0.9 steals per game, showcasing his two-way prowess. His physicality and length make him a perfect fit with LeBron [James] and Luka's offense, offering reliable off-ball screening, switchability, and the ability to guard multiple positions. "White's 16.4 PPG on 38.4% from three, coupled with 4.8 APG, offers the Lakers a proven secondary creator. His elevated March, where he logged consecutive 35+ point games and earned Eastern Player of the Month honors, signals his ability to carry offensive weight when necessary "White's postseason resume includes averaging over 20 minutes with a consistent defensive impact. He's been a key piece in Boston's deep playoff runs, bringing championship-tested toughness. With LeBron aging into later playoff years, pairing him with a guard like White, who's accustomed to ferocious playoff intensity, could tip the scales in grueling Western Conference battles." White is the type of gritty, multi-faceted player the Lakers could dearly use. He could perhaps be seen as a souped-up, much more offensive-minded version of Alex Caruso, the super sub and cult hero who contributed to their 2020 championship team and has now earned a second ring with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The problem with this proposal is that it would leave the Lakers with little trade capital to use on addressing their hole at the 5. White is also about to turn 31 years of age and has a contract extension that will kick in for next season and pay him $28.1 million during the 2025-26 campaign. But he certainly looks like the type of player who could bring L.A. significantly closer to its 18th world title.
