Alan Cumming hints at fight scene with Pedro Pascal in 'Avengers: Doomsday'
It's been over two decades since Alan Cumming last played the teleporting Marvel mutant Nightcrawler. Now he's back for Avengers: Doomsday and facing even more formidable foes, like —Mister Fantastic?
"I'm playing Nightcrawler again now. I was learning stunts yesterday for the fight, some fight scene, and I just think, 'I'm 60 years old!'" Cumming recently told BuzzFeed UK. "Twenty-three years ago I played that superhero, I was kind of old for a superhero even then, and now I'm back doing it. That to me is hilarious, so learning these fights, I'm like, 'What? Who am I fighting with?' They said, 'You're hitting Pedro Pascal against the head,' or something."
Cumming explained that he "can't quite believe" he's back in blue in the MCU, "especially because it was such a long time ago."
"But that is quite a nice thing, I think, about life as you get older," The Traitors' Emmy-winning reality TV host reflected, "is that things come back, they always do. And people do. It's a really nice thing about getting older."
Other X-Men actors returning include Patrick Stewart, who plays X-Men leader Dr. Charles Xavier; Ian McKellen, who plays Xavier's former friend turned formidable adversary, Magneto; James Marsden, who plays the laser-eyed Cyclops; and Rebecca Romijn, who plays shapeshifter Mystique. All of these characters appeared in 2003's X2: X-Men United, the film that marked the only appearance of Cummings' Nightcrawler (a.k.a. Kurt Wagner).Pascal, meanwhile, remains on the rarefied list of Hollywood stars who haven't appeared in the MCU. Only for a limited time, however, as he's slated to appear in new MCU film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, releasing July 25, 2025. Avengers: Doomsday, the first new Avengers film since the blockbuster 2019 release of Avengers: Endgame, is set to follow on May 1, 2026.
The Last of Us actor is no stranger to high-budget, high-visibility projects, having the lead role in Star Wars series The Mandalorian and as a major plot-driving character in Game of Thrones. He got his start, however, in guest roles on series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Law & Order.
He told Entertainment Weekly in April that being cast at the head of Marvel's super-powered new family was "a big ,strange thing that I hadn't planned on happening. It changed the course of my life in a very sudden way, so I really had to process."
Cumming, meanwhile, is more granular in his appraisal of entering back into the MCU machine.
Discussing the laborious makeup procedure that transforms him into Nightcrawler in April, Cumming enthused, "Actually, what's great about it — it was four-and-a-half to five hours before, and now it's 90 minutes... before, all the tattoos were done by hand, because they hadn't decided on them before we started filming. And now, they're on these little things and they stick on. It's a game-changer."

The Gold shows downside to life on-the-run for Brink's-Mat robbers
The Gold showed that life in hiding abroad may not have been quite so glamorous for the Brink's-Mat robbers. Jack Lowden's portrayal of criminal Kenneth Noye showed him as paranoid and anxious in the latest episode of the BBC true-crime drama, which aired on Monday, 16 June. Things began to unravel for the gold robbers living in hiding in luxurious foreign locations. Noye found the Canary Islands was not the most comfortable place to be after he was recognised in a bar by a fellow British ex-pat. Noye chose to go on the run yet again, while money launderer John Palmer stayed put. But later in the episode things began to fall apart for both Palmer and fellow money launderer Logan Campbell, as the police closed in on them. The Gold examines one of the most infamous crimes in British history, the Brink's-Mat robbery, which led to £26m worth of gold, jewellery and cash being stolen — the equivalent of £111m today. A number of people were involved in the robbery from the raid itself to helping melt down the gold, launder the money, and recirculate it back into legitimate channels. The first series featured the robbery and the immediate aftermath, while the current series follows the police investigation to hunt down and catch the criminals after they fled abroad. The hunt is led by detective Brian Boyce, played by Hugh Bonneville. In episode four of series two Noye has been released from prison after serving eight years of his sentence for being found guilty of conspiracy to handle the gold stolen in the Brink's-Mat robbery in 1983. He arrives in Tenerife to visit Palmer, played by Tom Cullen, who has set up a timeshare business on the island to launder the money from the robbery. Looking around Palmer's luxurious home Noye tells him: "This is nice, John. Your house, your plane, your life. Could have been a lot worse though, couldn't it? For you anyway. I did my time." Later, Noye is out drinking in a bar when he is recognised by an old friend of a friend who he played golf with. He asks him: "You on holiday then? Fair enough, hey, you deserve one, don't you, after a stretch like that." Noye threatens the man not to tell anyone where he is, saying: "You won't tell no-one nothing. Because if I find out that you told Barry or your missus, or your f***ing dog, you saw me here, and that ain't gonna work out well for you, Dave. That ain't gonna work out well at all." Noye then returns to see Palmer and asks for his help to disappear. Noye tells him: "Don't matter what I'm running from, what matters is staying ahead of it. And that ain't happening there. Too many English on this island, I may as well be in bloody Kent. I need to go somewhere quiet. And I need enough dough to stay there. "You don't want me coming back here, do you? Every time I need a little bit more of what you got from the gold." As he leaves he tells Palmer: "You know the difference between us, John. We're both on the run. But only I know it." Campbell is a fictional character, who has been created for the purposes of the series and he actually is based on multiple real-life people. In the episode fellow money launderer Douglas Baxter turned and became a police informant he agreed to wear a wire and talk to Campbell about his involvement in the Brink's-Mat robbery. Campbell, played by Tom Hughes, guesses something is up and invites Baxter into the swimming pool with him to check if he is wearing a wire. He then confesses everything to his girlfriend Kadene and invites her to go on the run with him to South America or Switzerland. Campbells says: "There's a lot I can tell you, and I will. For now What you need to know is that I've Laundered large amounts of drugs money, and the DEA and the British police are here to arrest me." In a tense climax to the episode Kadene turns Campbell in to the police, telling him: "I chose Tortola." And back in Spain, Palmer agrees to take on a new money laundering client, only to realise he has been set up by an under cover officer and everything he has said is on camera. Places to watch Black Sabbath's final gig in Birmingham if you didn't get Villa Park tickets
If there's one thing you can rely on Birmingham's music venues for it's keeping the joy of heavy metal alive for fans in this city, all year round. And with Black Sabbath's final gig less than two weeks away at the time of writing, they're once again stepping up for those who love alternative music in Birmingham. Some of our best rock bars are setting up big screens for the day on Saturday, July 5, streaming the Back To The Beginning show so everyone that couldn't get a ticket to the sold-out event can watch it together with fellow fans. Danny Boyle Is Planning A Whole 28 Years Later Trilogy – Here's Everything He's Said So Far
The latest instalment in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later saga is finally in cinemas, with 28 Years Later pulling us right back into the franchise's post-apocalyptic, rage-infected world nearly three decades on from the events of the first movie. Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and newcomer Alfie Williams, the Oscar-winning filmmaker is back in the director's chair (he famously did not helm the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, but stayed on as a producer) to continue the story. While the first movie starred Cillian Murphy as a hospital patient who wakes up from a coma to find London deserted in the midst of a zombie outbreak (yes, we know, they're not technically 'zombies') the new film revolves around a group of survivors living on an island before one ventures over to the mainland. With numerous rave reviews landing before the film's official release on Friday, fans of the franchise will be delighted to hear that the Trainspotting director has already expressed his hopes that 28 Years Later will mark the beginning of a brand new trilogy. A second instalment in the proposed new trilogy is actually coming sooner than you think. The next film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was actually filmed back-to-back with the new movie, and is currently slated to come out 16 January 2026. The Marvels writer Nia DaCosta will be directing that one in place of Danny (who is staying on as a producer), with Alex Garland on screenplay duties once again. The Slumdog Millionaire director explained that 28 Years Later should still be considered a 'standalone film' during a Reddit Ask Me Anything, adding: 'We hope all of the films in the trilogy will be, but also we want all to be seen satisfyingly as a trilogy'. So far, Danny has shared some key details about the future of the franchise to get us excited in the meantime (including the return of one very special A-lister). Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director explained that during a bidding war for the film, they were looking for a studio 'who was also prepared to invest in the second film', which had already been written by that point. The deal eventually went to Sony, and for both logistical and financial reasons, he said it would have been 'insane not to' shoot 28 Years Later and its sequel back-to-back. However, because the filmmaker was, of course, hard at work on the first, he said it would have been 'impossible' for him to simultaneously shoot the second. That's why American director Nia DaCosta, known for directing and co-writing both 2023's The Marvels and the 2021 Candyman sequel, was recruited for film number two, and according to Danny, she's 'done a great job of it' As for a third film, Danny explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he and the team are still trying to get money for that one, which he intends to direct if all goes to plan. Speaking to IGN this month, he explained that their finances for the third instalment will likely depend on 'how the first one does'. In a separate interview with the BBC he said he envisioned Alife Williams appearing in all three parts of the story, adding: 'Hopefully, if we do OK, they'll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody's standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.' Fans of the original movie will be elated to hear that the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer star will, indeed, be returning in the second movie of the trilogy, The Bone Temple. 'He is in the second one,' Danny revealed to IGN. 'I shouldn't give away too much. I'll get killed.' During Danny's Reddit Ask Me Anything, he added that Cillian's 'central character of Jim will be there as a theme through them all'. Danny is also hopeful that Cillian's star power could help get the third film greenlit. 'All I can say is you have to wait for Cillian, but hopefully he will help us get the third film financed,' he told Business Insider. Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman told Deadline in May last year that Cillian's character would be back in a 'surprising way and in a way that grows'. Viewers had previously speculated that Cillian's character may have become infected when they spotted someone who bore an uncanny resemblance to the Peaky Blinders star in one particularly chilling shot of the trailer – though this turned out not to be the case. 28 Years Later is in cinemas now. The sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is expected to arrive on 16 January 2026.
