Manchester United confirm release of Ireland international Aoife Mannion
MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE confirmed that Aoife Mannion will leave the club at the end of her contract this month.
The Republic of Ireland international joined the Women's Super League club in 2021 and earned a new contract two years later after overcoming a serious knee injury.
The centre back was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in 2024 and made 55 appearances for United during her time in England's north west.
For Ireland boss Carla Ward it adds another player to the list of those internationals looking for a new club.

Heather Payne's exit from Everton was confirmed earlier this month while Izzy Atkinson's contract was not renewed by Crystal Palace, and London City Lionesses release goalkeeper Grace Moloney and defender Megan Campbell following their promotion to the WSL.

Drogheda up to second after ending turbulent week on a high
Drogheda United kissed goodbye to their European dream this week and if their victory over Sligo Rovers was another farewell of sorts, it was certainly more joyous. Douglas James-Taylor's fourth minute goal proved the difference in the end as United climbed back above Bohemians and into second place in the Premier Division. Their quest for European qualification via the league route takes on a whole different dimension now in light of their expulsion from the UEFA Conference League this summer. While a good display against Shamrock Rovers on Monday did not deliver a positive result, they displayed a determination and rigour against Sligo that will likely form the backbone of the remainder of their season. James-Taylor hadn't hit an open play goal of any description since his header in the FAI Cup semi-final last October. He has battled with a thigh injury this term though and his early strike against Sligo Rovers as just his second of the season. His loan spell ends in just 10 days time. The striker belongs to United's sister club Walsall and has certainly been one of the positives of their multi-club model involvement. If this was to his final home outing for the club, he provided a memorable send-off. There were just three minutes on the clock when Warren Davis harried Jad Hakiki off the ball and midfield and scurried forward. Somehow, there were no more in the opening 45 minutes. Davis failed to get a shot on target from eight yards when teed up by his strike-partner and Andy Quinn curled an effort just over the bar. In first half injury time, Conor Kane rattled the joint of crossbar and post. That was soon after a 60-yard run from Quinn that ended with James-Taylor poking a shot just wide of the goal. Sligo – who lost Gareth McElroy to concussion – played their part in a pulsating first half too. Wilson Waweru's near post flick was saved by Luke Dennison and then the Drogs goalkeeper was behind Owen Elding's shot from Will Fitzgerald's pull back. John Russell's team were producing quick, incisive play in dangerous areas. United's defence was being made to work hard for their clean sheet. They had the best chance of the opening minutes of the second half. Will Fitzgerald's volley was scooped over the bar by United's Californian stopper. Later on, both Hakiki and substitute Cian Kavanagh were guilty of failing to find the target when on each occasion, the net should have rippled. Both were especially damning on a night when a good Bit O'Red display was undermined by misfortune and misfire in front of goal. As expected, Drogheda owner and co-chairman Ben Boycott was present at the game. He addressed Kevin Doherty and his players in light of their UEFA Conference League expulsion. The Trivela Group CEO was also seen speaking to supporters prior to kick-off, likely offering apologies and assurances in equal measure. His team at least demonstrated that for failings off the pitch, they are still motoring along nicely on it. First-half dominance paves way for Galway United win over St Pat's
First-half goals from Edward McCarthy, David Hurley and Robert Slevin powered Galway United to a 3-1 victory over St Patrick's Athletic 3-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park. On an immaculate Terryland surface on a sunswept evening in Galway, it was John Caulfield's team who started the encounter on the front foot. With just two minutes played, United goalkeeper Evan Watts cannoned a goal kick in behind the St Pat's defence, which Edward McCarthy benefitted from, before his swivelled effort found the bottom corner to put the home side in front. One goal soon turned into two when David Hurley, making his 160th appearance for the club, demonstrated his technical ability to find the opposition's net from his own half. In the 11th minute, Hurley took full advantage of Joseph Anang's poor clearance, and his well-placed attempt before the halfway line dropped into the empty goal to send the United faithful into euphoria. The St Pat's defence looked shaky throughout the opening 45 minutes, as further chances fell to McCarthy and the lively Moses Dyer, while at the other end of the pitch, Stephen Kenny's side struggled to create many clear-cut chances. That was until youngster Mason Melia brought life into their attacking play as the first half progressed. Melia first tested Watts with a close-range strike, before the Tottenham Hotspur-bound talent began another advance on the United backline, which led to a Saints lifeline in the 34th minute. Simon Power was the man who eventually got on the end of an Axel Sjoberg through ball, and the winger's fine finish into the top corner halved the deficit. St Pat's optimism was soon dashed, as within a minute, the Tribesmen claimed their two-goal cushion back as the cracker on Corribside continued. Robert Slevin beat Anang to a Hurley corner kick, and the centre-back's header made it 3-1 with 10 minutes to play before the break. In the second half, St Pat's brought more quality in possession, as opportunities landed to Aidan Keena and Jamie Lennon, but the United defence held firm. A crucial call came in the 71st minute. A long-range Power shot was well saved by Watts, with Melia being quickest to react to the rebound, and an outstretched Greg Cunningham leg seemed to take Melia down. To the dismay of the Saints' bench, the referee adjudged the tackle not to be enough to award a penalty kick. The Saints continued to push for a reply, but it wasn't to be for the Inchicore outfit, as Watts produced some top saves before the final whistle to retain his side's lead, as the Tribesmen picked up three valuable points.
