Wenceel Pérez home run lifts Detroit Tigers past Rays, 9-3, as bats go crazy late
TAMPA, FL — The ball just kept carrying.
Switch-hitter Wenceel Pérez — one of the Detroit Tigers' best players since his May 27 return from the injured list — swung at a fastball from Tampa Bay Rays left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger, pushing it to right-center field. He didn't crush the ball, but it carried over the wall for a two-run home run.

The two-run homer propelled the Tigers to a 9-3 win over the Rays on Sunday, June 22, in the finale at George M. Steinbrenner Field. With the victory, the Tigers (49-30) snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided a series sweep.
Pérez has six homers in 22 games.

After taking a 3-1 lead, the Tigers tacked on six runs in the top of the ninth inning during a torrential downpour.
Riley Greene — the heartbeat of the Tigers — sparked the five-run inning with his 20th double, followed by Spencer Torkelson's 17th double. The back-to-back doubles from the former first-round picks extended the Tigers' lead to 4-1.

A single from Pérez pushed the score to 5-1.
And then, the big swing from Parker Meadows: He destroyed a first-pitch cutter — a middle-middle pitch — from right-handed reliever Forrest Whitley for a three-run home run to right-center field, increasing the Tigers' margin to 8-1.

It was Meadows' second homer this season.
Meadows, who typically serves as the leadoff hitter, has a .172 batting average in 17 games after missing the first two months with a musculocutaneous nerve injury in his right arm.

Zach McKinstry made it 9-1 with a sacrifice fly.
The Rays scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning — a result of left-handed reliever Brant Hurter loading the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch — but it was too little, too late for a comeback.
Casey Mize shoves
Right-hander Casey Mize looked sharp in his 13th start.
The 28-year-old exited after a drop in velocity on his final pitch and a mound visit from an athletic trainer in the sixth inning, following his 80th pitch.

Before the early exit, Mize allowed one run on six hits and zero walks across five-plus innings. The only damage was a solo home run from Junior Caminero in the fourth inning.

Caminero hit a hanging slurve.
Mize received help from Greene in left field in the second and third innings.
He made a diving catch with a runner on first base for the first out in the second. He added an incredible catch over the wall in foul territory with a runner on third base, ending the third. (He also completed a sliding catch for the first out in the eighth inning, with a runner on first base.)
The Tigers had two fielding errors in the third, with third baseman Colt Keith and catcher Dillon Dingler responsible. Those errors were the reason why Christopher Morel advanced to third base before Greene's catch.

Mize has a 2.88 ERA in 13 starts.

Scoring first
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Facing right-hander Zack Littell, Greene produced his first of two doubles in the game — putting himself into scoring position from the onset of the inning.
He then moved up to third base on Pérez's flyout.
With two outs, Dillon Dingler delivered a two-strike single off Littell's 95 mph fastball at the top of the strike zone, driving in Greene from third base for a 1-0 advantage.

Greene finished 3-for-4 with one strikeout, including this 19th and 20th doubles.
He is hitting .291 with an .875 OPS in 77 games.
Meanwhile, Kerry Carpenter went 0-for-2 with one strikeout. Since June 10, he is hitting .061 (2-for-33) with zero walks and 11 strikeouts across 11 games.

'I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build up for a couple years now of them just not, not protecting the star player in the WNBA. And so at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates, that's what I do," she said. Matt Dennish more than held his own against the pros at the Fanatics Games. (Credit: OBB Media) Dennish is a 39-year-old high school teacher at his alma mater, Red Lion High School in York, Pennsylvania. He was one of 50 average fans who got the chance to compete against the pros for the top prize of $1 million, and he finished in third place to win a 2003-04 LeBron James rookie chrome refractor card, last valued at $250,000. Dennish later traded the card to Brady for $250,000 cash, plus a signed Brady card and jersey. Brady said he would give $5,000 to every fan who competed and donate the rest of his earnings to charity. UFC fighter Justin Gaethje placed second and won a 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB. Six of the top 10 finishers were average fans. Dennish was clearly one of the best athletes in the competition. He stands 6-foot-6, was a standout cross-country and track runner and a basketball player in high school. He ran a 4:08 mile his freshman year at East Carolina, and he said his recent accomplishments included hitting a half-court shot at a Philadelphia 76ers game and working himself down to a two handicap on the golf course. Advertisement Dennish beat out such pros as Kevin Durant, Eli Manning, Dwight Howard, Rob Gronkowski, Denny Hamlin, Russell Wilson, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Julian Edelman. Contestants were scored in eight contests, and the lowest two numbers were dropped. Dennish came into Friday's competition most nervous about the WWE Superstar entrance since he isn't a fan of wrestling. "A friend who is a fan convinced me to do Joe Hendry," Dennish told cllct. "I got a belt that our high school women's wrestling team bought and took off my shirt." Dennish got 70 total points in the WWE event, good for 10th-best score of the day. The MLB pitching accuracy was next. Contestants were given six pitches to score as many points as they can by hitting targets. The top and bottom corners were worth five points. The middle strike zone was one, and all the rest were three. Dennish shined, hitting four five-pointers, a three and a one. No one did better. Next he hit the NHL washer-dryer puck shooting contest, an area he knew would be difficult. He's not a hockey guy. Given 12 shots, he failed to knock in one, only lifting the puck successfully once. Advertisement In the NFL QB skills, Dennish was impressive. He went 3-for-5 in the 10-yard toss and the 20-yard toss and missed the golden ball, a 30-yard toss, by a foot or two. The top three best contestants in this skill were not surprisingly: 1. Stroud, 2. Brady and 3 (tie). Russell Wilson and Eli Manning. Dennish came in a respectable 11th. Dennish also finished 11th overall in the UFC striking challenge, hitting the punching bag for a total of 75.5 points. The FIFA goal-scoring was a strategy game for Dennish. He hit six out of eight in the bottom corners for five points each, but then got greedy by trying the top corners for 10 points and missed them all. He came in sixth. Streamer Adin Ross finished with Friday's best score. Advertisement In the last event, the Dick's closest-to-the-pin golf contest, Dennish knew he would be among the best. And he was right. "It's basically all I do these days," he said. The challenge? The contestants had five chances to get the ball on the green at a 105-yard par-3 hole, simulated from Oakmont Country Club, the site of last week's U.S. Open. One point for the green, two points for within 15 yards. Dennish came away with a respectable four points, placing three on the green and one within 15 feet. Brady finished first, and Dennish was fourth, one spot ahead of Manning. After competing, Dennish sat around eating some pizza and reloading the scores. Before he headed home on his train back to Pennsylvania, he saw he was in third place behind Brady and just ahead of Manning. Advertisement Although he dropped to third Sunday after Gaethje passed him, Dennish managed to hold onto the third spot and finish on the podium.
