Malay Secretariat move deepens political rift

Focus Malaysia7 days ago

PLANS to establish a Malay Secretariat as an umbrella body to unite the Malays are facing criticism from top UMNO leaders, including party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Puad Zarkashi, thus cementing the existing divisions in the Malay political landscape.
Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said the Malay unity agenda should not be used as a political gimmick, adding that while UMNO is not against any parties who are attempting to unite the Malays, the motive for its struggle must be clear and not just for political purposes.
He added that UMNO would not accept any form of secretariat that supposedly aims to unite the Malays on a political basis.
At the same time, Zahid took jibes at former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who backs a Malay Secretariat, whom he said lost his deposit in the 2022 general elections.
Dr Mahathir had reportedly formed the secretariat to unite all parties fighting for the Malays under one big umbrella on June 4.
'I would like to wish the chairperson of the Malay Secretariat all the best, and I pray that he will succeed in uniting Malay parties and Malay non-governmental organisations for the benefit of the Malays.
'Let us unite in what is important in terms of thought, mindset, and conscience, not for any other purpose when the organising party is trying to unite the Malays after not having a winner in the last election, apart from all losing deposits,' he said last week.
Meanwhile, the secretariat idea was dismissed by Puad, who criticised Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Tan Sri Annuar Musa for initiating the so-called 'umbrella' initiative.
He considers the secretariat to be laden with political manoeuvring and suggested that Annuar should instead help PAS rectify its political approach rather than forming such a secretariat.
'What's with Annuar Musa now? Wanting to establish a Malay secretariat? You're a politician. Too much political scheming. Just stay in PAS. Strengthen your unity within PN first.
'Fix PAS' way of politicking, which hides behind religion and loves to judge. That's the reason Malays are divided,' he wrote in a Facebook post.
Puad also chided Annuar for what he saw as a failed attempt to unite the Malays with the Muafakat Nasional (MN). He urged Annuar not to add to the confusion among Malays with another 'secretariat'.
'You already have MN. We know MN wasn't born from the sweat of your struggle. It wasn't born from events like the Malays opposing the Malayan Union.
'Don't confuse the Malays. Big Malay umbrella, Malay Secretariat, Malays under threat. Turns out, you're the one threatening Malay unity,' he said. — June 15, 2025

222 Johor projects worth RM10b yet to start, says MB

JOHOR BARU: Johor has 222 projects scheduled between 2016 and 2024 that have yet to commence. The projects, worth around RM10 billion, include various public facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and clinics, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. "When I ask in meetings, they say, 'Don't worry, we'll check with the respective ministries, we'll get it approved.' "All these projects are for the people, but they still haven't started," he said in his speech at the 2025 Umno Tebrau division delegates' meeting here on Saturday. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairman, said Umno leaders in the state risk incurring public anger if the projects are not implemented. "Council members, village heads, community leaders – don't just attend meetings to look good. "If the projects don't go through, if the allocations are not used properly and appropriately, let me ask – who will the people be angry with? "At the agency? Or at the Umno leaders? They will be angry with us. That's why we need to go down to the ground and inspect things ourselves," he said. The Machap assemblyman said the federal government should place its trust in the state leadership to approve and implement projects in Johor. He suggested that the federal government initiate a pilot programme with Johor to evaluate the proposal's effectiveness. "If you don't want to implement it nationwide, make Johor the pilot state. "Insya-Allah, the Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor can be trusted and will shoulder these responsibilities for religion, race and homeland," he said. Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment at the lack of implementation. "I don't like making people angry. "But when it comes to the welfare of the people, don't test me. I will fight all the way for the people – for the people of Johor. That is the spirit of Johor Umno. "What we say is not just rhetoric. If we say it, Insya-Allah, we will deliver it," he said. Also present at the event were Johor Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Johor Umno secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman, who is also Tebrau Umno division chief.

Perlis MB loses in bid for Arau Pas chief post

ARAU: The Pas Arau division polls delivered several surprises as Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli failed in his bid to unseat incumbent Solahudin Azmi from the division chief position. Two state executive councillors in Shukri's state administration also failed in the race for the deputy division chief and vice chief positions. The biggest shock came with the defeat of Shukri, who is also the state Pas commissioner in a straight fight with Solahudin Azmi. He garnered only 43 votes, while Solahudin secured 128 votes. For the deputy division chief position, the state Youth and Sports Committee chairman, Mohd Ridzuan Hashim, who is also Guar Sanji asemblyman, won comfortably with 135 votes, defeating the incumbent and current Perlis state State Assembly speaker, Rus'ele Eizan, who received just 34 votes. In the contest for vice division chief position, the state Agriculture, Plantations and Consumer Affairs Commitee chairman Razali Saad, was defeated after receiving only 39 votes compared to the incumbent Mohd Yusairi Mansor, who won with 130 votes. The Arau Pas division held its annual general meeting today, with participation from 173 delegates representing 60 branches. In his speech, Solahudin expressed gratitude for being re-elected to the position. "This outcome reflects the delegates' confidence in the current leadership team, and it does not diminish the significant contributions of state leaders in steering the administration based on Islamic principles and collective leadership. "Losing in this election doesn't imply a rejection of the state government's leadership, but rather it's a normal process within Pas' mature political culture. "The fact that there was competition in this election proves that Pas practises genuine grassroots democracy," he said. He added that the defeat of several state leaders should not be interpreted as a sign of rejection. "Instead, it offers an opportunity to further strengthen each leader's role within the leadership ranks. "What's more important is that those elected must now shoulder the great responsibility of leading the community," he added. As for the Kangar Pas division, its annual general meeting is scheduled for June 28, where a contest is expected between the incumbent chief, Yussaine Yahya, and Senator Baharudin Ahmad. Meanwhile, in Padang Besar, the upcoming annual meeting on June 22 is also drawing attention as the incumbent chief, Saad Seman will be challenged by fellow state Exco member Muhammad Azmir Azizan.

UMNO division wants unconditional reinstatement of Hishamuddin

THE Sembrong UMNO Division has once again proposed the immediate and unconditional lifting of Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's suspension, saying it is the wish of the majority of delegates. Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said this marks the second year the division has raised this motion, adding that they want the former senior defence minister's return to active party roles ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). 'Last year, Sembrong UMNO made the same proposal to revoke Hishammuddin's six-year membership suspension. The members' wishes are clear—they want the suspension lifted without conditions,' Abdul Ghani said after the Sembrong UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting today. Meanwhile, UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani urged the party to form strong, cohesive teams in every division to prepare for the GE16, expected in about two years. Speaking at the UMNO Ketereh Division Delegates' Meeting in Kota Bharu, he emphasised training these teams now to avoid issues like sabotage and to identify capable leaders who align with public expectations. 'These teams need to be trained now so we can identify who is capable. We want to build the nation with leaders who meet the people's expectations,' he said. Johari highlighted that 40% of GE16 voters will be young, with diverse priorities, particularly among university students and graduates. He also stressed the importance of power-sharing to ensure political stability and national progress. 'They fall into three phases: 18-year-olds, university students, and recent graduates. Those aged 18 may vote based on their parents' influence, but the other two groups think differently and will consider leaders who can benefit future generations,' he added. — June 21, 2025 Main photo credit: PR Newswire
