BBC Condemns Comedian David Walliams for Making Nazi Salute During Panel Show Recording

Comedian and children's author David Walliams has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the BBC, for making two Nazi salutes during a recording of panel show Would I Lie To You? earlier this week.
The Times first reported that Walliams, also a former judge on Britain's Got Talent, made the gestures during a segment in which another panellist joked about injuring their wrist while waving.

The audience at Pinewood Studios, where the show's Christmas special was being filmed on Tuesday, was reportedly shocked when Walliams joined in to mimic the waves before holding his arm in a Nazi salute.
A journalist called Sebastian Topan contacted the BBC to describe the incident. 'Some other panellist was talking when David Walliams started doing the Nazi salute,' Topan told BBC News. 'I was shocked at what I had seen… [There were] patches of quietened gasps and awkward half-laughs and broken clapping.'
Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon, hosting the show, informed Walliams the program would be broadcast before the 9 p.m. watershed. But as discussions continued, Walliams is said to have done the salute again and added a sexual gesture with his other hand. 'The atmosphere was uncomfortable and weird,' Topan claimed.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Walliams' team for comment.
A spokesperson for Banijay U.K., which owns the show's production company Zeppotron, said that any attempt at humor regarding this 'deeply offensive gesture,' whether broadcast or not, is 'completely unacceptable in any context.'
'It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances,' they continued, 'and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.'
A BBC spokesperson also said: 'The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused.'
It isn't the first time Walliams has come under fire for controversy. Well known in the U.K. for his team-up on Little Britain and Come Fly With Me with Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids, Alice in Wonderland), he departed ITV's Britain's Got Talent in 2022 when a recording of him insulting contestants on the show were made public.

Seventeen years ago, Slumdog Millionaire swept the 81st Academy Awards, walking away with eight of the 10 Oscars it was nominated for. But Danny Boyle, who took home the 2009 Academy Award for Best Director for his work on the film, says he wouldn't be the right person to helm the Mumbai-set drama if it were in the works today. 'Yeah, we wouldn't be able to make that now,' Boyle recently told The Guardian. Released in 2008, Slumdog tells the story of 18-year-old orphan Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), who survives the violent, poverty-stricken slums of Mumbai to win big on the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The film, which loosely follows Vikas Swarup's novel Q & A, used a local crew for its Mumbai filming locations and featured actors speaking both English and Hindi. 'At the time it felt radical,' Boyle said. 'We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai. We'd work with a big Indian crew and try to make a film within the culture.' However, the intervening years caused Boyle to rethink that approach. 'You're still an outsider,' the Trainspotting director said. 'It's still a flawed method. That kind of cultural appropriation might be sanctioned at certain times. But at other times it cannot be.' As proud as the 68-year-old Brit is of the film, he acknowledged that a modern Slumdog would have trouble getting financed under that model. 'You wouldn't even contemplate doing something like that today,' he said. 'And that's how it should be. It's time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we've left on the world.' Boyle told to EW in 2009 that he dove into Slumdog because he wanted to make a 'very immediate and vital' movie after finishing work on the chilly sci-fi thriller Sunshine. 'I learned quickly that when you work in Mumbai you have to accept what you find,' he said at the time. 'As a Westerner you have this feeling that you can fight bad things and work on good things and separate the two. What you have to do is accept and absorb both. That's what changed me.' In a 2008 director's roundtable convened by The Hollywood Reporter, Boyle acknowledged that he didn't have a full grasp on India during Slumdog's production. 'I know nothing of it, really,' he said in THR's video. 'You get a tiny little glimpse and maybe if we've done it well, there's a bit of it that's convincing, for the time being until somebody makes something better. You absolutely have to humble yourself in front of it.' Boyle told the roundtable that he expected to be viewed as a colonialist when he arrived in Mumbai and was surprised that the people there viewed him as 'a footnote.' 'It lets you let go of that kind of attitude,' he said. 'Either you go home disappointed or you get home and make the film.'Today, however, Boyle told The Guardian that if he were to be part of the team bringing Slumdog to the screen today, he'd want it to be directed by a young Indian filmmaker. 'And that's how it should be. It's time to reflect on all that,' he said. 'We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we've left on the world.' Over two decades after 28 Days Later redefined zombie horror, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland return to their virus-ravaged world with 28 Years Later—the first in a newly planned trilogy. The $60 million sequel sees the Rage Virus still festering on British soil, while the rest of the world has moved on. Opening in theaters today, the film explores not just the ongoing fight for survival, but also the evolution of both the virus and humanity. Set on the remote Holy Island off England's northeast coast, 28 Years Later centers on 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams). who has never known a world beyond the fortified pathway linking his small community to the quarantined mainland. On his birthday, his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) takes him across the water for a harrowing rite of passage—only to find that the infected have evolved. Some crawl; others, now dubbed Alphas, lead organized hunting packs. The film also stars Jodie Comer as Isla, a housebound mother. 'There are moments that feel incredibly heightened—you're out of breath, facing elements of hysteria—but it's brilliant,' Comer told the BBC, describing the intensity of filming without CGI. While 28 Years Later doesn't revisit the immunity storyline from 28 Weeks Later, it does mark the beginning of a new arc that will stretch across two more films. Garland has already penned the second installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and due next year. Boyle, who hopes to return for the trilogy's conclusion, confirmed to Collider that Cillian Murphy's Jim—last seen alive in 28 Days Later—will appear in the second and play a major role in the third. Not yet. The film is currently playing in theaters, with a streaming release date to be announced. Given Sony's distribution history, the title is likely to become available via digital purchase first, followed by streaming on one of its affiliated platforms—though no official plan has been confirmed. The British director, who also made the films Trainspotting and 127 Hours, said that he was proud of Slumdog Millionaire, but that 'you wouldn't even contemplate doing something like that today'. The 2008 Oscar-winning movie, which Boyle directed, follows the story of a boy from the slums of Mumbai who is one question away from winning the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, before being arrested on suspicion of cheating. It was shot in Mumbai, partly in Hindi, and used a local crew, but the award-winning director said he couldn't make it today. He would instead be 'looking for a young Indian filmmaker' to direct the picture, because his directing of the film was 'cultural appropriation'. He told The Guardian on his press tour for the horror film 28 Years Later: 'That kind of cultural appropriation might be sanctioned at certain times, but at other times it cannot be. It wouldn't even get financed. 'We wouldn't be able to make that now. And that's how it should be. It's time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we've left on the world.' He said it was a 'flawed method' because it was filmed by 'outsiders'. 'At the time it felt radical. The film premiered at the 2008 Telluride Film Festival and won eight Oscars at the 2009 Academy Awards, including those for best picture and best director, as well as several BAFTA awards and Golden Globes. It was also a box office hit, making $378 million worldwide on a reported $15 million budget. Speaking about his directorial choices in the interview, Boyle explained: 'I value the popular audience. I believe in popular entertainment. 'I want to push the boat out, but take the popular audience with me.' Elsewhere, he discussed his direction of Isles of Wonder, the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics that featured Daniel Craig as James Bond and the late Queen Elizabeth II. The film, which was a celebration of British culture, also featured the National Health Service, Shakespeare, the Sex Pistols and Windrush migrants. However, Boyle said his 'biggest regret' was not featuring the BBC in it more, saying if he were to do it again he would 'big up' the 'precious' national broadcaster. He said: 'My biggest regret was that we didn't feature the BBC more. I was stopped from doing it because it was the host broadcaster. 'Every other objection, I told them to go f--- themselves. But that one I accepted and I regret that now, especially given the way that technology is moving. 'The idea that we have a broadcaster that is part of our national identity, but is also trusted around the world and that can't be bought, can't be subsumed into Meta or whatever, feels really precious.
