Big Man, the first offering from his #Merky Films company, follows the story of Tenzman, a rapper whose career is fading — until a chance meeting with two young boys, Klevis and Tyrell, changes the course of his life. It has already had almost a million YouTube views in less than 24 hours. Arrogant Merky Films has been in the making for a long time, as Stormzy explained: 'We've been working on this for five years. We've done our due diligence. 'I think sometimes it's very arrogant to think that because you've got a profile elsewhere, you can just step into a space with all the bells and whistles. 'We didn't want to do that.' Stormzy is impressive in the leading role, and the tenderness he has towards young actors Jaydon Eastman and Klevis Brahja feels completely organic. Stormzy's US superstar ex breaks silence on dating star for first time since they were spotted snogging at airport 'They absolutely killed it,' Stormzy says, 'I was like a duck out of water. 'They made me feel comfortable and gave me confidence. I was the biggest amateur there.' Stormzy's not doing himself justice. Don't get me wrong, this film isn't pushing an agenda. The messaging is an undercurrent that makes you think but it doesn't take away from the fact it is genuinely hilarious and heartwarming. Screams Thanks to the brilliant rising stars Jaydon and Klevis, the improvisation feels so natural and authentic — you can't help laughing out loud. In one scene, Stormzy — who towers over me at 6ft 5in — screams as he's riding a rollercoaster with the lads. But he's not hollering because he's afraid of heights. 'That rollercoaster is too small for me,' Stormzy admits with a laugh. 'My knees are literally banging against the thing. I'm screaming in pain.' Stormzy promises there is more to come. 'We've got a lot of things in development,' he explains. 'I just want people to feel something. To enjoy it in the most pure, sentimental way.' Michael Omari, better known as music icon Stormzy, takes on his first lead acting role in 'Big Man,' a short movie directed by Academy Award Winner Aneil Karia. It was entirely shot on iPhone 16 Pro. Stormzy in Big Man Merky The film is about Tenzman, a musician who's seen better days, who has a chance encounter with two teenagers. The film is the first from Stormzy's Merky Films. Omari talked about it on Instagram: 'This is something we've been working on behind the scenes for a long time: a platform for bold, authentic and powerful British storytelling. A home for original and unexpected art. It's a natural extension of everything we do at #Merky — telling our stories, shining a light on real voices and creating space for those who deserve to be seen and heard. I'm proud to share our very first official production: Big Man, produced in partnership with Apple — out on June 18th. A short film directed by the legendary Aneil Karia,' he said. This is not the first movie shot on iPhone — I'm sure your camera roll has several masterpieces of your own — and it's becoming an increasingly popular way to shoot. But as an official Shot on iPhone piece, this is the first that has been made in the U.K., as well as the first lead role by Stormzy. Directors love the way that something as small and light as an iPhone can be used, especially for dramas, where the director of photography can get up close to actors without the disorienting effect that a full-size Hollywood camera can cause. With an iPhone, directors say they can find performances that are intensely naturalistic and simple. The director of this movie commented that "It's much smaller than the traditional cameras... the lightness and flexibility that comes with that is boundless," he said. Stormzy has said his acting debut is 'all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth'. The 31-year-old British rapper has just launched his new production company, #Merky Films, and the performer – real name Michael Omari – will be taking the leading role in Big Man, a 24-minute short film and the first project from his new company. He said in a statement quoted by Variety: 'I hope you love our first project, Big Man, as much as we loved making it. 'For me, it's all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth – that feeling like life is one big adventure and the world's your playground. 'I hope it inspires you to dream bigger, live louder, and hold on to that unapologetic energy that comes with being young.' The film, directed by Academy Award-winner Aneil Karia, tells the fictional story of Tenzman, a former rap star facing an uncertain chapter in his life. It is set for release on YouTube at 8pm on Wednesday 18 June, and was made in association with Apple. Stormzy's new venture builds on the expanding #Merky brand, which already includes #Merky Books, #Merky FC and the #Merky Foundation. Merky Films aims to increase access to television and film for Afro-Caribbean and other underrepresented communities. Its stated mission is to champion new voices by creating projects that 'connect communities, celebrate culture and inspire meaningful change'. A development deal is already in place with Netflix to create multiple projects, including a 'powerful drama series' and a 'seminal biopic', with additional talks ongoing with other film companies. Speaking about the launch of #Merky Films, Stormzy added: 'I always say: music is my first love, but film is my second. #Merky Films is something I've been dreaming about for ages – a space for powerful British stories and a solid home for fresh, unexpected art.
