Reality star Jax Taylor 'always knew there was something wrong'

Perth Now09-05-2025

Jax Taylor knew there was "something wrong" with him years before his bipolar disorder diagnosis.
The 45-year-old reality star has revealed that he relied on drugs and alcohol to "shut [his] brain off", before he was diagnosed with the mental health condition.
He said on 'In the Mind of Jax Taylor': "I never got checked. Did I know I had something wrong with me for years? Absolutely.'
Jax attended rehab in 2024 and that's when his mental health issues came to the fore.
The former 'Vanderpump Rules' star - who has Cruz, four, with his estranged wife Brittany Cartwright - shared: "I'm like, 'Something is f****** wrong with me. Something is wrong. I'm flying off the handle. I'm angry. I'm easily triggered.'
"I'm happy one minute. I'm sad the next minute. And there's absolutely no reason to be this way because on paper, I have it all. Home, cars, toys, healthy child, healthy wife."
Although Jax has battled problems with drugs and alcohol, he actually considers his "ego" to have been an even bigger issue.
The reality star said: "It was really, really bad, man.
"My ego got in the way of me ... Drugs and alcohol were a problem, but they weren't the problem. I used drugs and alcohol to mask all my problems. Validation, insecurity, ego, manipulation, narcissism, all these things that people told me, anger issues ... my family issues."
In April, Jax suggested that an earlier diagnosis could've saved his marriage.
The TV star was diagnosed with the mental health condition in September - but by then, his marriage to Brittany had already fallen apart.
He said on 'In the Mind of Jax Taylor': "This is the first time in my 45 years of life that I had to ask for help because I just couldn't do it anymore. I just, I couldn't bear the weight. And I just - I surrendered. I surrendered."
Jax has been using a mood stabiliser called Lamotrigine over recent months, and it's actually changed his life.
He explained: "I'm on it, and I absolutely love it."
Jax now regrets that he didn't start using Lamotrigine even sooner.
He said: "I never miss a day, and it's literally changed my life. I wish I would've took it sooner. Probably would've saved my marriage."

Jax Taylor 'devastated' by divorce from Brittany Cartwright

Jax Taylor found being served divorce papers to be "devastating". The 45-year-old TV star emerged from a stint in rehab to find that Brittany Cartwright was planning to divorce him, and Jax has now admitted to feeling overwhelmed by the situation. Jax - who has Cruz, four, with Brittany - said on The Valley: "Imagine coming out of a facility, dealing with your mental health issues and then being slammed with divorce papers. And then, on top of it, it going public before you've even had the time to digest it. It's hard. "Getting those divorce papers, it's devastating. "We're both so hurt. We both hurt each other so much in the last couple of years. We don't have anything left." Jax felt "safe" during his stint in rehab, but reality hit him when he returned home. The TV star - who married Brittany back in 2019 - said: "You walk out the doors, and it's like, life just hits you. "Now, okay, I got to remember everything that I've learned, I got to move into this new place, I got to see my son, I got to face everybody. It's a lot to take in at once. I just don't want to go back into my old ways, because it's very easy to slip." Meanwhile, Jax previously admitted that he's been battling a cocaine addiction for more than 20 years. He said on the Hot Mic podcast: "I have substance issues - primarily with cocaine. It's hard to say out loud. I've been dealing with this on and off since I was 23 and now I'm 45. "There was times where I would stop doing it but then there were times where I'd go heavy on it. "I just want to let people know this is a really, really tough disease and it's a really tough sickness." Brittany subsequently claimed that she spent years trying to help Jax to "get better". She said on When Reality Hits: "No one wants Jax to be better more than I do, let's be real. "I tried and tried and tried for years to help this man get better and for us to be a happy family, I was deeply and madly in love with him, there's no one that can ever deny that."

Brittany Cartwright details why she finally filed for divorce from Jax Taylor

Brittany Cartwright filed for divorce when Jax Taylor became "more and more aggressive". The reality stars - who have four-year-old Cruz together - separated in January 2024 and Brittany finally made moves to officially end their marriage in August that year, and the decision came after Jax "stopped paying the mortgage" on their family home and their arguments became more explosive. The latest episode of The Valley showed Brittany meeting a divorce lawyer the day before Jax was due to leave rehab. She said: "I think it's the right time before he gets out. We separated in January of this year, I moved into an Airbnb for a while. We continued fighting, and nothing's getting better." Asked why she had made the appointment, Brittant told how Jax's "blow-ups [are] getting more and more aggressive." She added: "He's throwing furniture and punched walls and stuff but he hasn't laid his hands on me. Really bad. He is in rehab right now, he gets out tomorrow. He's still been rage-texting me." Brittany showed the texts she had received the night before until she "had to block him", in which Jax told his estranged spouse he knew she was "drinking" and that "everyone" would tell him "if you tattle on me again". She said: "He's so worried about me being with guys. He was looking at me through the cameras and telling me what I was wearing. He is obsessed." The 36-year-old star went on to detail their financial issues, as she claimed Jax had "stopped paying the mortgage" as soon as she moved out of their family home. She said: "He's always paid the mortgage, and I've always paid all the bills. He was so far behind on his taxes before we got married, I think it was $1.2 million behind. He was going to go to jail if I didn't allow him to put it on our house. "Our mortgage went from $8,000 to like, $17,000 right now because of his stuff. They even took $100,000 out of my bank account just because I was married to him. He got a lease at a condo without telling me as well, and now moving forward he wants me to take over the house completely." Asked Jax's contribution now, she said: "I pay for everything for my son, never asked him to pay anything because he was taking care of the mortgage this whole time, I thought." Brittany also told her friends that the 45-year-old star had written her a "really long email" warning the house "was in foreclosure". She said: "He could actually ruin my chances of owning another home or anything. "My name is on it just as much as his is. I would lose the money I put down, the equity we put in ... If he doesn't fix this I'm ready to fight." And Brittany told the group Jax had lied about being taken to hospital. She explained his therapist had told her that Jax "made the girl who answers the phone cry because he told her that if anybody calls, lie and say he was on his way to Urgent Care." She added: "She was sobbing, crying. He made her feel like she had to tell people that, so the therapist had to tell all of us the truth that he never went to the hospital. I'm going through hell."

Jax Taylor quits social media 'to prioritise mental health'

Jax Taylor has quit social media in an effort to protect his mental health. The 45-year-old reality TV star - who previously confessed to battling a drug addiction - has announced that he's taking a break from social media platforms, as he focuses on his "mental health and recovery". Jax - who has Cruz, four, with Brittany Cartwright, his estranged wife - wrote on Instagram Story: "I've made the decision to stay off social media for the next while to prioritize my mental health and recovery. My team will be running it for the time being. (sic)" Jax confessed that certain posts on social media can be triggering. Speaking on 'In the Mind of Jax Taylor', he explained: "My brain is so fragile, and if I see certain things, they might trigger me. Something might hit a chord, and I don't think I'm strong enough to read certain things. "For me to grow and get better and be a better person, there are some things I need to see in order to know what's going on. But I think I took it so much to the extreme of blocking everything and living in my own little world." Jax feels he now needs to cut himself off from social media platforms. He said: "The phone has become a problem. Do I need to be on social media? No, I don't." Meanwhile, Jax previously admitted that he's been battling a cocaine addiction for more than 20 years. He said on the 'Hot Mic' podcast: "I have substance issues - primarily with cocaine. It's hard to say out loud. I've been dealing with this on and off since I was 23 and now I'm 45.
