Dodgers-Padres game erupts into chaos in wild benches-clearing scene

Yahoo5 hours ago

The Dodgers and Padres are starting to feel like a genuine rivalry — and Thursday night's game with a benches-clearing incident only added to that.
After San Diego star Fernando Tatis was drilled on the elbow in the top of the ninth inning by Jack Little, Padres manager came out of the visitors' dugout and had some words for home plate umpire Marvin Hudson before barking at Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts.

That's when things got heated as Roberts came off the bench and got close to Shildt, appearing to give the Padres manager a bit of a shove, leading to players from both teams exiting their respective dugouts and bullpens.
Mike Schilts took exception to something from the Dodgers.
The teams came close to one another in the incident.
Both Mike Shildt and Dave Roberts were ejected.
Shildt and Roberts had to be held back as the fracas moved toward the first row of the stands behind home plate.
When everything was settled, there were two ejections — Roberts and Shildt — in the Padres' 5-3 win over the Dodgers.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Is About To Get A Lot Hotter

Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain cools down in the hot weather during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 ... More group B match between Paris Saint-Germain FC and Club Atletico de Madrid at Rose Bowl Stadium on June 15 in Pasadena, Calif. While some teams – particularly those from milder European climbs – have already complained about oppressive heat at games across the United States through the first week of the tournament, forecasts are calling for conditions to worsen significantly over the next several days. So far, the heat has been mostly seasonal in June in the U.S., particularly on the Eastern Seaboard where the majority of tournament matches are being played. That has prompted some kidding from local observers of the tournament, who are accustomed to regularly playing through such conditions in domestic play as well as the currently ongoing Concacaf Gold Cup. But the next few days could be truly dangerous in places where group stage matches are scheduled. And possibly compounding matters are FIFA's decision the schedule the majority of those matches before sundown locally, to be shown in more favorable TV windows in Europe and elsewhere around the world. There are currently five group stage games scheduled where the forecast high is 94 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and the match is scheduled entirely. (All data is from as of Saturday evening.) Sunday Tuesday Wednesday Borussia Dortmund vs. Ulsan HD (Cincinnati) There are no current plans to reschedule kickoff times, though as recent weather delays have shown, that sort of thing is always subject to change. But part of the issue is that final group games from Monday to Thursday are scheduled tkick off simultaneously to avoid giving any team a competitive advantage on the final day of group play. So if one match is rescheduled for later in the day, presumably the corresponding other match in the group would also need to be. Of course, temperature is only part of the story. The heat index and WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) use additional factors such as relative humidity and sun intensity to measure how adverse conditions are. But were these MLS fixtures, it appears likely they would be rescheduled to night kickoffs. According to information from the league's website published in 2016, matches will go into a delay if and when the WBGT rise above 92.3. Given that all of these kickoffs occur before sundown – and given that in the Eastern United States, heat and humidity go together – it's very likely conditions will exceed that threshold at least at some of these scheduled fixtures. Looking forward, there may be even more potential for heat to have extreme impact on the knockout phase. Of the 15 scheduled single-elimination matches, 11 are scheduled to kick off at 4 pm ET or earlier in outdoor conditions. Temperatures aren't expected to be quite as hot into early July as they are the first few days of the coming week, but summer forecasts in particular are turbulent, and another wave of extreme heat before the competition ends wouldn't be all that surprising.

Kliundikova answered with a layup 24 seconds later, McBride added a 3-pointer and a three-point play and Williams made a pull-up jumper with 4:48 left that gave Minnesota a nine-point lead. Dearica Hamby made a layup to cut the deficit to seven before Alanna Smith and McBride hit 3s 31 seconds apart about a minute later. Kelsey Plum scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half, including a layup with 0.2 second left in the second quarter that gave the Sparks a 35-34 lead at halftime. Hamby finished with 13 points and four steals and Azura Stevens had 11 points and nine rebounds. Fernando Tatis Jr. hits 3-run homer to lead Padres past Royals

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a three-run homer to end his long power drought and Dylan Cease pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning as the San Diego Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday. Luis Arraez gave San Diego a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the third, and the Padres won for the third time in 10 games. The loss halted Kansas City's four-game winning streak. With the Padres ahead by one in the seventh, Jose Iglesias and Bryce Johnson hit consecutive singles. Tatis followed by smashing a 96 mph sinker from reliever Taylor Clarke into the left-field bleachers for his 14th homer this season and first since May 27. Cease (3-6) effectively mixed his four-seam fastball and slider to keep the Royals from mounting much offense. He gave up one run and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings. Adrian Morejon retired all five batters he faced to seal it for San Diego. Royals starter Noah Cameron (2-3) permitted two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jake Cronenworth had an RBI groundout for the Padres in the second. John Rave tied it 1-all with a run-scoring double in the third. Key moment With a runner on second in the eighth and the Royals trying to mount a comeback, Iglesias made a spectacular play at third base to rob Vinnie Pasquantino of a hit. Key stat Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts continued his torrid hitting with two more singles. He has hits in 10 of his last 13 at-bats spanning three-plus games. During that stretch, Bogaerts has a home run, two doubles and seven singles. Up next Royals RHP Seth Lugo (4-5, 3.05 ERA) starts the finale of the three-game series Sunday against RHP Randy Vasquez (3-4, 3.70). ___ AP MLB:
