Drive launched to assess activities of govt schools
Hubballi: The education department is set to launch a drive titled 'Minchina Sanchara' to assess the activities and conditions of all govt schools in the district.
A total of 11 teams, including 150 officials, will visit around 800 schools and review their activities.
The officers will gather information regarding various aspects of the schools, including their startup procedures, developmental progress, infrastructure, and past academic results.
They will collect the required data using a predetermined format that encompasses 30 key points of evaluation. The drive, which is slated to run until June 13, is aimed at ensuring that school management is not lax at the beginning of the academic year.
Shanamuk Swamy Keladimath, deputy director of public instruction, told TOI that the officials were directed to spend about 1 hour inspecting facilities such as the condition of classrooms, toilets, sports centres, distribution of notebooks and textbooks, attendance of students and staff, registration, mid-day meal scheme and drinking water facilities.
SM Hudedmani, deputy project coordinator, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan at the DDPI office, said the team comprises block education officer, block resource persons), and cluster resource persons and education officers to visit schools.
Hudedamani said he visited some schools and received information from school management about the distribution of notebooks, uniforms, cleanliness of toilets, etc. After visiting the schools, the officials will send a report to DDPI for further action.

LKG, UKG classes to commence in 120 anganwadis this year
Hubballi: In a move to strengthen early childhood education at govt-run anganwadi centres, the women and child welfare department will introduce LKG and UKG classes at 120 centres in the district starting this academic year. The education department has already initiated similar efforts in govt primary schools. The state govt earlier announced the launch of pre-primary education in various districts, which is now being implemented. Admitting children to pre-KG has become expensive in private institutions. Today, the obsession with English-medium schools has increased among parents. Parents want their children to study in convents even if they have to work. This is also causing enrolment in govt schools to decline. Realising this, the Women and Child Welfare Department decided to teach pre-primary education across the state. In the district, PM SHRI schools that have started pre-KG are running at full strength. The classrooms for these children have been designed to be attractive and colourful. Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Dharwad, Huligemma Kukanur, said that there are 1,622 anganwadis functioning in the district. The department asked for a list of anganwadis to start pre-KG classes. Therefore, a list of 120 anganwadis has been sent to the govt for approval. Soon, after directions from the govt, the classes will start, she said. Shobha Karikatti, a contract teacher at PM SHRI School, Amargol, said that in UKG, 35 children and in LKG, 27 children were admitted, running at full strength. Teaching methods are different in private institutions. Activity-based education is our first priority. For that, we revised many toys, materials, flashcards, notes for teachers, etc. Pre-KG teachers will be trained at the District Institute of Education and Training every year. The English language is also included for children. For the intellectual and mental development of children, activity-based teaching is provided, she said.

New policy to safeguard intangible assets unveiled
Panaji: Biodiversity sites like sacred groves and khazan lands will be safeguarded as govt has unveiled a comprehensive 182-page Goa Heritage Policy on Friday aimed at preserving both tangible and intangible heritage assets. The heritage policy's categories under intangible assets are natural, cultural and eco-cultural. 'This policy was put together because we have a lot of concern for all of Goa's heritage sites,' said archives and archaeology minister Subhash Phal Dessai. 'Sacred groves, khazan lands, wetlands, rivers, tidal agro-ecosystems and biodiversity zones will be protected under the policy. It will also include the gaanvkari communidade system and village governance. This will be done without encroaching into other departments such as agriculture and forests,' he said. He said that documentation of shigmo, romtamel, intruz, cantaram, mussol khell, tiatr and various other folk forms will be done. 'There is a need to preserve our intangible heritage, which is slowly disappearing. We will make video documentation of the folk forms and preserve it in our library to be accessible to future generations. We will also promote research work on heritage,' he said. 'There will be detailed guidelines, acts and schemes that will be implemented under this policy.'

Yoga Day prep stresses youth participation
Lucknow: This year's World Yoga Day is being marked by two campaigns. 'Yoga Unplugged' is aimed at youth participation in the event, while 'Harit Yoga', focuses on environmental sustainability. Yoga Day is on Jun 21 but is marked by week-long activities in the state. A major initiative will be to popularise yoga as a way of life, for which yoga parks are being developed across the state, with participation of local bodies such as municipalities and gram panchayats. A govt spokesperson said three yoga parks will be developed in districts with divisional headquarters and two in all other districts. District magistrates have been instructed to identify suitable sites, formulate plans in coordination with department of urban development and forward plans to govt. "Each park will be developed with a green, clean and peaceful environment, accessible to all sections of society. The parks will include facilities such as trained yoga instructors, open gyms, resting spaces, clean drinking water and adequate lighting. The campaign is being run across govt AYUSH colleges, vocational training institutes, universities, and degree colleges in a bid to reach out to students directly. Events under the programme will include elocution contests on benefits of yoga and mental well-being, live yoga demonstrations by students showcasing various asanas and meditation techniques, rangoli, debate and poster-making contests highlighting relevance of yoga, award ceremonies to honour top performers at the state level and social media promotion of events, visuals and results using hashtags like #YogaUnplugged. Harit Yoga campaign will strive to bring together discipline of yoga with conservation of nature, spreading the idea that "true yoga is harmony of self-discipline and environmental protection". The message will be reinforced through open-air yoga sessions at scenic natural sites like riverbanks, lakesides, parks, and Amrit Sarovars, plantation drives at every yoga gathering, cleanliness campaigns before and after yoga events by students and local residents, and community involvement through participation by panchayats, local bodies, NSS/NCC cadets and school children.
