Edu dept issues notice to 207 schools over poor SSLC results
Koppal: The education department of Koppal district has issued notices to 207 school principals, including 132 from govt schools, whose performance fell below the district average in this year's SSLC examination. "We wish to identify the teachers' duties and the impediments to better results," said DDPI Srishail Biradar. The district achieved a 56.6% pass rate, with 92 schools scoring below 40%. Koppal district, which ranked 16th in the state three years ago, dropped to 32nd position with 66.2% two years ago. The recent results show a further decline to 56.6%. Koppal district contains 342 high schools: 107 in Gangavathi, 85 in Koppal and Yalburga and 65 in Kushtagi educational taluk. The distribution includes 219 govt, 32 aided and 91 unaided schools, with govt schools showing a significant decline. Schools scoring below 40% include 25 in Gangavathi, 29 in Koppal taluk, 17 in Kushtagi taluk and 21 in Yalburga educational taluk. There are concerns regarding the quality of children's reading, the teaching capabilities of teachers, the state of the school environment and the consistency of student attendance. The notice aims to gather information for improving results in the next academic year. The education department will analyse the headmasters' responses to create a comprehensive report. Govt school headmasters have voiced their opposition. One headteacher, speaking anonymously, notes, "According to govt rules, schools should run for 220 days a year. However, this is only possible on paper. A lot of time is being wasted on works for govt departments and local administration programmes." The headteachers said the department failed to implement measures to uphold the quality of education at the primary level. "It does not hold primary school teachers accountable for the academic shortcomings of students," they said. They said, "Most crucially, children who do not achieve even a basic level of learning are not permitted to fail. As a result, these underperforming students are advancing to SSLC, leading to a decline in overall results. How can only high school teachers be blamed for this?" Teachers have expressed worries about local political meddling, SDMC (School Development and Monitoring Committee) involvement, their deployment for non-teaching duties and harassment from education officials under the guise of inspections, all of which negatively impact teaching standards. Teachers are also deliberating on what would constitute an appropriate response to the notice without risking consequences.

Schools in DK expect a rise admissions to Class 1
Mangaluru: Schools in the district expect an increase in admissions to Class 1 this academic year due to the relaxation of the minimum age limit — from six years to 5 years and 5 months. According to officials, this will be the last academic year for such an exemption to be granted. The state has announced that it will adhere to the Right to Education (RTE) and National Education Policy (NEP), which will allow only those who have completed age six as of June 1 from next year. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, is hopeful that they expect to see an increase of an additional 500 to 600 admissions to Class 1. "These additional admissions we expect are more than targeted for the current academic year. Last year, 30,860 students joined Class 1 in DK district," said Madivala, adding that higher primary schools also see an additional 2,000 students' admissions every year, especially from class 5 or 6, as students from other districts join here. "We will be able to get a complete picture only after July, as the admissions process is open till then," he explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Berlin: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo "Admissions are going on at full swing in govt schools. It was initially affected by recent heavy rain, which stopped many students from other districts, particularly from north Karnataka, from getting admissions. The numbers are likely to go up after their return," said a school head. A block education officer (BEO) confirmed the same and added: "With this relaxation, children who went to anganwadis or whose names are not registered in the Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) and are 5 years and 5 months old are now eligible. Those who attend kindergarten (LKG/UKG), registered in SATS, and not completed UKG are not eligible even if they are 5 years and 5 months old." The BEO further explained that the SATS database contains comprehensive information, and this new flexibility in admission criteria will particularly advantage students entering govt schools, as they typically do not attend kindergarten programmes.

568 teacher posts vacant in Kodagu govt schools
Madikeri: As students resumed their studies following their two-month summer holiday, despite the rain, the district's govt primary and high schools are experiencing a considerable shortage of teaching staff. The district houses 623 govt educational institutions, comprising both primary and high schools. The vacancy in Kodagu district's govt schools shows 568 unfilled teaching positions, with 143 vacancies in primary schools and 425 in high schools. This shortage existed before the academic year started. In Madikeri taluk's govt primary schools, while 97 teaching positions are sanctioned, only 51 are occupied, leaving 46 vacant. Somwarpet taluk currently employs 132 teachers out of 195 sanctioned positions, with 63 positions unfilled. Virajpet taluk's govt primary schools have 86 teachers working against 120 sanctioned positions, leaving 34 vacancies. The district's govt primary schools have 412 sanctioned permanent teaching positions, with 269 currently filled, requiring 143 additional permanent appointments. Virajpet taluk has 484 sanctioned positions, 294 filled positions, requiring 190 additional appointments. Govt high schools require 1,412 permanent teachers, currently have 987, and need 425 more appointments. Reliance on guest teachers The current situation forces existing teachers to work under considerable pressure. The absence of permanent staff has led to increased reliance on guest teachers for maintaining educational standards. The teacher shortage in govt high schools correlates with declining SSLC results. Teachers often must handle multiple subjects, with headmasters and physical education instructors taking additional teaching responsibilities. The shortage particularly affects SSLC performance in Mathematics, Science, and English. And Kannada teachers must also teach English classes. While private schools can partner with companies for appointments, govt schools depend on guest teacher appointments. Some primary schools lack headmasters, with co-teachers serving as acting headmasters. Govt plans to appoint 384 guest teachers in Kodagu district against the 568 vacancies. Statewide, the govt intends to appoint 51,000 guest teachers, avoiding permanent appointments. Kodagu DDPI C Rangadhamappa said 384 guest teacher posts have already been sanctioned for Kodagu district. If there is still demand, guest teachers will be appointed. 70% of the textbooks and other supplies have been supplied. Work is under way to supply it to all schools, he said.
