SCTIMST to resume surgeries after deal with HLL
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) is set to resume surgeries that were postponed due to a shortage of implant devices, following a new agreement with HLL Lifecare.
Under the deal, Amrit Pharma – a division of HLL – will supply the necessary devices to the institute. 'To address the immediate requirements, SCTIMST has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amrit Pharma. The hospital will now procure essential supplies through them to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations,' said Dr Kavita Raja, medical superintendent of the institute.
However, the hospital has not yet announced when the delayed procedures will be rescheduled. The current arrangement with HLL is viewed as a temporary measure, while the hospital works on streamlining its procurement process.
Earlier this week, the Department of Imaging Sciences and Interventional Radiology (IS & IR) at SCTIMST had suspended all peripheral and neuro-interventional procedures due to a critical shortage of devices. The disruption affected patients from across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other regions referred to the hospital.
The delay in procurement was further aggravated by a Union government directive mandating purchases through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal.
Though intended to improve transparency, doctors have criticised the policy for slowing down the supply chain and impacting patient care. As some of the surgeries were suspended, the Union Minister Suresh Gopi called an emergency meeting to arrange the materials through HLL Lifecare. Youth wing of Congress and CPM staged protests against the apathy of the authorities of the premier institute.

KOCHI: At a time when Union minister Suresh Gopi has cast doubts on Kozhikode being selected to host the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kerala, the state government has reaffirmed its decision in an affidavit, filed with the High Court, stating that the land in Kinaloor is most suitable for the premier institution. The government also said that the allegation that Kasaragod and other districts have been neglected in considering the site has no standing. The affidavit was filed in response to petitions challenging the decision. One of the petitioners — AIIMS Kasaragod Janakeeya Koottayma — sought a directive to resubmit a list to include Kasaragod as a potential site for the establishment of the medical institution, while Greater Piravom Development Forum, Ernakulam, sought to explore the feasibility of proposing land owned by the state government -- the first respondent -- at Mevalloor Newsprint Nagar at Velloor as an alternative. Opposing the pleas, the deputy secretary of the health department said the state has chosen Kinaloor as the most suitable location for establishing the AIIMS, considering various factors. Moreover, the government has taken all possible steps to develop medical facilities across the state, without discrimination. Action is being taken for establishing a medical college in Kasaragod district. The application has been submitted to the National Medical Commission and the government plans to enrol 50 students in the 2025-26 academic year itself, the official said. Last year, secretary of the central ministry of health and family welfare was requested to depute a team to study feasibility of the land earmarked in Kerala. Further, in a letter of the minister of health, the Union finance ministry was requested to give its 'in principle' approval for the AIIMS in Kerala and to include the same in the next phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Senior citizens, children participate in Yoga Day events held in Kochi
Several people, including children and senior citizens, participated in the International Yoga Day programmes held here on Saturday (June 21, 2025). Union Minister Suresh Gopi, who led the programme held at the Bolgatty Palace event centre, said Yoga should become a daily habit among people to build a healthy nation. 'Good health is essential for the country's development, and Yoga is the only way to achieve it,' he added. Actor Mohanlal participated in a programme held at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) convention centre in Nedumbassery. Several children joined him in demonstrating Yoga techniques. Speaking on the occasion, the actor urged the youth to stay away from the menace of drugs, describing it as a cancer that destroys one's health. A mass Yoga session was organised by the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 4 (Kerala & Mahe) at its headquarters in Fort Kochi. The event was held in association with the Kochi Cultural Heritage and Tourism Society and Brahma Kumaris Foundation. Around 300 participants, including officers, enlisted personnel, defence civilians, and family members of the Coast Guard fraternity, took part in the session. At the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training headquarters in Kochi, Director M. Habibullah inaugurated the International Yoga Day programmes.
