In collaboration with Dubai National Theatre, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library Library hosted a dynamic workshop titled 'The World of Shakespeare: Literature and Performance.'
Presented by renowned artist Jehad Sa'ad, the two-day event drew a remarkable turnout and engaged an audience of literature and theatre enthusiasts.
This event is part of a series of unique programmes hosted by the library to nurture the cultural and creative arena in the UAE.
The first day focused on the theoretical aspect, where Sa'ad reviewed William Shakespeare's career, as one of the key figures of world theater and the most influential in the history of literature.
The workshop addressed his main theatrical works, namely 'Romeo and Juliet,' the tragedy that became an icon of love, and a deep conflict between emotion and destiny.
The workshop also delved into an in-depth analysis of the 'Shakespearean character,' characterised by a complex psychological makeup and profound internal conflict, evident in plays such as 'Hamlet' and 'Macbeth,' where will clashes with destiny, and duty with emotion, in a solid dramatic structure that continues to inspire generations.
On the second day, participants participated in a live theatrical performance experience, with live rehearsals of selected scenes from Shakespeare's works, under Sa'ad's supervision.
During these rehearsals, Sa'ad offered the attendees guidance on recitation, movement, and vocal expression. This allowed them to get closer to the spirit of the theatrical text and bring it to life on stage.
Dr. Mohammed Salem AlMazrooei, Board Member at Mohammed Bin Rashid Library Foundation, said: 'Hosting these events supports our unwavering commitment to stimulating the cultural movement, and enhancing the status of literature and the arts in the UAE, particularly in Dubai. This reinforces its position as a regional and global hub for culture and creativity through pioneering initiatives that celebrate talent, and embrace cultural dialogue between people.'
AlMazrooei added: 'This workshop is part of a series of programs launched by the library, aiming to empower literary and theatrical talents and provide interactive platforms that open new horizons for those interested in this field. Strategic cultural partnerships play a pivotal role in supporting knowledge development, enhancing the sustainability of the cultural sector, and building an environment conducive to creativity and innovation. We look forward to working with our partners on new, pioneering initiatives.'

Misty Copeland is retiring and moving to the next stage

Ten years ago this month, Misty Copeland sat in front of a hastily arranged news conference at American Ballet Theatre, fighting back tears of pride over her new role: principal dancer. 'This is it,' she said, with emotion. 'This has been my dream since I was 13.' The occasion was highly unusual — normally, when a dancer is promoted, a brief press release is issued. But this was Copeland, a crossover star with fame far beyond the insular world of ballet. And now she was becoming the first Black female principal in the company's 75-year history — just days after her New York debut as the lead in 'Swan Lake' brought a refreshingly diverse, packed audience to the Metropolitan Opera House. Now, a decade and many accomplishments later, Copeland is retiring from the company she joined as a teenager. 'It's been 25 years at ABT, and I think it's time,' Copeland, 42, told the Associated Press last week ahead of Monday's official announcement of her move. 'It's time for me to move to the next stage.' The company is planning a splashy farewell on Oct. 22, featuring performances by Copeland — for the first time in five years — and other dancers. There will be speeches and film clips. And Copeland, who's been heavily involved in the planning, will get a chance to venture one more time onto that balcony in Verona; she'll dance again in the beautiful 'Romeo and Juliet' pas de deux. Honorary chairs for the evening will be Caroline Kennedy and Oprah Winfrey. A lot has happened in a quarter-century. Copeland, whose success brought new energy to an art form that has always been overwhelmingly white, has authored a number of books, including a memoir and and several works for young people. The second installment of 'Bunheads' arrives in September, and more are already planned in a series she calls 'a reflection of my journey, showing the range of cultures and types of people that can be a part of the ballet world.' Copeland has also made a short film with her production company. And her philanthropic organization, The Misty Copeland Foundation, works on increasing diversity in the dance world and giving more kids who grew up economically disadvantaged, like she did, the chance to dance. What does this moment mean? Is ballet a chapter that's now ending for you? You know, I've become the person that I am today, and have all the opportunities I have today, because of ballet, (and) because of American Ballet Theatre. I feel like this is me saying thank you to the company. So it's a farewell. (But) it won't be the end of me dancing. ... Never say never. Who are some of the partners you've most enjoyed working with? I think about my partnership with (former ABT principal) Roberto Bolle and him giving me so many opportunities to travel the world with him ... (Former ABT principal) Marcelo Gomes, he's been such a such a big part of my journey, and of course Herman Cornejo. We've had a beautiful partnership throughout my career and I'm excited to dance with him again (at the October farewell,) So you've got the foundation, you've got the writing career, the production company. Which of those areas do you think you'll be focusing most on? It's been pretty evenly split between all of then. I think it just depends on what's at the forefront and what needs my focus. ... But it's exciting to be able to utilize dance in so many different mediums, and to me, that's how you get true diversity - by giving people different entry points into learning about dance and feeling like they can be a part of it, which has been my goal. How do I bring dance to as many people as possible in a way that really works for them? Associated Press

MBRL to host several poetry and literary events in January

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library (MBRL) is preparing to welcome 2025 with a lineup of literary, poetry, and musical evenings in January; with the participation of elite writers, creators, and musicians. This comes as part of its sustainable strategy to promote the cultural and knowledge sector over the next fifty years. The first of these events is a poetry evening entitled 'She, the poet.' This event will feature poems about love, pride, description, and sentimental poems, alongside a unique oud performance. It will also be attended by some of the most prominent contemporary poetic voices in the Arab region, who will present renowned poetry collections and poems. In January, the library will host a group of Arab and foreign writers and creatives who have written works in languages other than their mother tongue in an evening entitled 'Literary Bridges: A Dialogue of Cultures.' The event will shed light on cross-border literary creativity, discuss the challenges faced by writers in expressing their ideas, and the cultural impact of these works in deepening cultural communication between societies. Furthermore, it will include readings of selected works from key literary works, discussions about the writers' experiences in writing in other languages, as well as reviewing the role of translation in reaching a global audience. The evening will conclude with a book signing ceremony that reflects the diversity of cultures and ideas. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is also collaborating with Dubai National Theatre and Sharqiat Choir to present an artistic evening about Al Rahbani musical theatre, entitled 'A Night With the Rahbani.' Set to showcase Al Rahbani's pioneering experience in blending Lebanese music, poetry, and theatrical performance, the event will discuss the importance of musical theatre, its cultural role, and ways to develop it to meet the tastes and aspirations of new generations. The event highlights a selection of Al Rahbani Brothers' popular works with Fairuz, including the film 'The Ring Seller' and the play 'The Moon Bridge,' which combined drama and music in an innovative style that blended authenticity and modernity. Since its establishment, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library has been leading efforts in spreading knowledge, promoting creativity, and supporting the cultural movement locally and regionally. To do this, the library organises and hosts programmes and events throughout the year to meet the interests of all community members. Those interested to learn more about the library's events in January or throughout the year, must visit the MBRL website and follow its social media channels. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library was founded by Law No. (14) of 2016 Establishing the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library, as part of His Highness's vision to develop a knowledge-based society in Dubai and across the UAE. The Library has become one of the most ambitious cultural and knowledge based initiatives in the Arab World. MBRL aims to spark the passion for knowledge across all social groups in the UAE, especially the youth, in addition to the conservation and promotion of Arabic literature, culture and heritage by supporting and promoting reading, research, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
