Trainer Joe Pride expects another bold showing from 2025 Civic Stakes favourite Headley Grange
Trainer Joe Pride is yet to find Headley Grange's ceiling but expects the bombproof galloper will be up to the challenge of Saturday's Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.
Pride will launch a three-pronged attack in the feature with Headley Grange the clear pick of the litter in the main event of the 10-race card alongside Cool Jakey and Estadio Mestalla.
Headley Grange has been a revelation for Pride over the past 12 months and hasn't finished worse than second in nearly a year with four wins in his past eight starts.
The son of Exosphere was a well-backed favourite when scoring first-up from a break with a strong victory in Benchmark 94 grade at Randwick.
'I can't remember the last time he missed the place, he is very honest and genuine,' Pride said.
'I think he is one of those ones where you don't need the trainer to recommend him to punters. I am sure they will all pile in.
'He is the clear favourite for a reason, very consistent. I guess if you have to pick holes in what he has to do on Saturday, it's his first time in Listed grade so that has to be against him.
'The conditions of the track are neither here nor there for him. He goes just as well on wet or dry.
'The 1400m is spot on so there's seemingly not many chinks in his armour.'

The Civic Stakes will be the first time in his 17-start career that Headley Grange has been tested in stakes grade but Pride believes his four-year-old is more than worthy of the opportunity.
Headley Grange has been one of the most consistent horses in Pride's stable and has continued on an upward trajectory.
'He could well go to another level. I figure he has a ceiling there somewhere,' Pride said.
'He has got the engine there and he won like a Listed race would be well within his mark. He is a going well.'
Headley Grange, to be ridden by Jason Collett, is the $2.70 favourite for the Civic Stakes with Cool Jakey at $10 and Estadio Mestalla at $23.
Cool Jakey is dropping back in trip with Reece Jones aboard after leading from the front and tiring late in a mile event at Randwick a fortnight ago.

'It was a mile race and he was OK at the mile on a leaderish track two starts ago but last start at a mile at the pace he went it was too far for him,' Pride said.
'Back 200m here. He has been fortunate enough to race on some wet tracks of late and it's been to his advantage.
'Saturday will be the driest he has had. It could be an issue for him.'
While Estadio Mestalla is the outsider of Pride's trio, he's expecting an improved effort from the gelding.
Estadio Mestalla finished five lengths off Headley Grange first-up from a break with Chad Schofield to take over the ride.
'He will run much better than his place in the market suggests,' Pride said.
'I can't quite put my finger on what happened to him first-up but he has pulled up well and is a horse that is very capable at this level.
'He has run second in a Little Dance and placed in this race last year.
'I am not asking him to do anything he hasn't before and I think he can get back to that form on Saturday.'
He will saddle up another in-form galloper when Storm The Ramparts ($4.20) goes in search of a third consecutive victory in the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1000m).
Storm The Ramparts will have to lug the topweight of 61.5kg after scoring back-to-back victories at the same venue this prep.
'He keeps creeping up in the weights but weights in 1000m races don't matter as much,' Pride said.
'I am happy with him. He is honest and genuine.
'He is another one that has been able to hit those soft and heavy tracks at those last three runs.
'Coming back to a track that is a soft 5 is he disadvantaged? Probably.'

Brisbane Roar eyeing off former Adelaide United defender Giuseppe Bovalina
Brisbane Roar have expressed an interest in bringing former Adelaide United defender Giuseppe Bovalina back to the A-League, and also haven't ruled out convincing winger Nikola Mileusnic to rejoin the club. Roar insiders have confirmed that both Bovalina and Mileusnic are in the club's sights. Bovalina, 20, joined Major League Soccer Club Vancouver Whitecaps in April last year from the Reds on an initial contract that will expire in 2026. However, Bovalina is struggling for game time, and could be tempted to kickstart his career at the Roar under the club's new coach, former Adelaide captain Michael Valkanis. Another former Red in Mileusnic left the Roar after three seasons to join Perth Glory last year. His Glory contract expires this month, and having started in only nine A-League games for Perth in the club's dismal 2024-25 campaign, a return to Brisbane could very well be on the cards for the 31-year-old attacking weapon, particularly with Valkanis having replaced Ruben Zadkovich as coach. Meanwhile, former Roar playmaker Keegan Jelacic has signed a two-year deal with Melbourne Victory. Jelacic, 22, left the Roar last month after joining the club on loan from Belgian outfit Gent in January last year. The Australian under-23 international has now parted ways with Gent permanently to link with the Victory, who have lost the past two A-League grand finals. 'Joining one of the biggest clubs in the league is always an exciting prospect,' Jelacic said. 'I'm looking forward to experiencing the passion of the club and doing my part on the pitch.' Victory coach Arthur Diles said Jelacic was an 'example of outstanding young Australian talent with valuable experience both locally and internationally'. 'Keegan's arrival at the club ahead of our 2025-26 campaign will bolster our midfield as we aim to go one better than we did last season,' Diles said. 'We have a strong foundation to build on, and we're looking forward to seeing Keegan bring his best to the team and contribute to our success.'

AFL: Gold Coast Suns intent on keeping Sam Flanders
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Suns coach Damien Hardwick has suggested rival clubs shouldn't waste their time trying to lure midfielder Sam Flanders away from the Gold Coast. Flanders, 23, is contracted to the Suns until the end of the 2027 AFL season; however, reports have emerged that St Kilda and some other Victorian clubs are keen to bring Flanders back to his home state sooner. However, Hardwick has no intention of letting go of the Gippsland product. 'We're not in the business of trading our very best players, so Sam Flanders won't be going anywhere,' the Suns coach said on Friday. 'I've got a real soft spot for Sam. He's one of my favourites. He's been really challenged this year with injury but … we're really positive about his back end of the year. 'He's the solution for us. He's an outstanding player. When he plays at his very best with Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson and Touk Miller … we're a different side.' Gold Coast midfielder Sam Flanders is among of Suns coach Damien Hardwick's 'favourites'. Picture: Gold Coast Suns Flanders isn't the only Suns star being reportedly chased by Victorian clubs, with off-contract on-baller Rowell and forward Ben King also linked with moves south. However, Hardwick said the Suns – who have won eight from 12 this season ahead of their clash on Sunday against the GWS Giants at Engie Stadium – were set to become a club that top players from other teams would want to join in a similar way to fellow Queenslanders and reigning premiers Brisbane. 'We've got to make sure this is the very best environment for players,' the former Richmond three-time premiership-winning coach said, 'We've got opposition clubs speaking to our players and we're speaking to opposition players. 'We want to keep our very good players, (and) we're also happy to take a few as well.' Hardwick's Suns are hoping to avoid a third successive defeat on Sunday after suffering back-to-back loss before their bye last weekend. 'We're really bullish about how far we can go,' he said ahead of the 'next shift' in the Suns' battle to play finals football for the first time. 'We've put to bed the first part of the year. This part of the year is really important. The contenders stand up and the pretenders fall away. That's the challenge from here on in. 'We're really excited about the next block of four games (against the Giants, Melbourne, Essendon and Collingwood) that's going to present an opportunity for us. 'We're firmly zone in on what that looks like. We've got some areas of our game that we really like, but we've certainly got a lot of improvement left in us as well.'
