Trainer Joe Pride expects another bold showing from 2025 Civic Stakes favourite Headley Grange
Trainer Joe Pride is yet to find Headley Grange's ceiling but expects the bombproof galloper will be up to the challenge of Saturday's Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick. Pride will launch a three-pronged attack in the feature with Headley Grange the clear pick of the litter in the main event of the 10-race card alongside Cool Jakey and Estadio Mestalla. Headley Grange has been a revelation for Pride over the past 12 months and hasn't finished worse than second in nearly a year with four wins in his past eight starts. The son of Exosphere was a well-backed favourite when scoring first-up from a break with a strong victory in Benchmark 94 grade at Randwick. 'I can't remember the last time he missed the place, he is very honest and genuine,' Pride said. 'I think he is one of those ones where you don't need the trainer to recommend him to punters. I am sure they will all pile in. 'He is the clear favourite for a reason, very consistent. I guess if you have to pick holes in what he has to do on Saturday, it's his first time in Listed grade so that has to be against him. 'The conditions of the track are neither here nor there for him. He goes just as well on wet or dry. 'The 1400m is spot on so there's seemingly not many chinks in his armour.' Headley Grange wins first up to give @PrideRacing a Randwick double! 🙌 @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 7, 2025 The Civic Stakes will be the first time in his 17-start career that Headley Grange has been tested in stakes grade but Pride believes his four-year-old is more than worthy of the opportunity. Headley Grange has been one of the most consistent horses in Pride's stable and has continued on an upward trajectory. 'He could well go to another level. I figure he has a ceiling there somewhere,' Pride said. 'He has got the engine there and he won like a Listed race would be well within his mark. He is a going well.' Headley Grange, to be ridden by Jason Collett, is the $2.70 favourite for the Civic Stakes with Cool Jakey at $10 and Estadio Mestalla at $23. Cool Jakey is dropping back in trip with Reece Jones aboard after leading from the front and tiring late in a mile event at Randwick a fortnight ago. • Ray & Duff's Randwick tips: Punters should plan their Exit on Saturday 'It was a mile race and he was OK at the mile on a leaderish track two starts ago but last start at a mile at the pace he went it was too far for him,' Pride said. 'Back 200m here. He has been fortunate enough to race on some wet tracks of late and it's been to his advantage. 'Saturday will be the driest he has had. It could be an issue for him.' While Estadio Mestalla is the outsider of Pride's trio, he's expecting an improved effort from the gelding. Estadio Mestalla finished five lengths off Headley Grange first-up from a break with Chad Schofield to take over the ride. 'He will run much better than his place in the market suggests,' Pride said. 'I can't quite put my finger on what happened to him first-up but he has pulled up well and is a horse that is very capable at this level. 'He has run second in a Little Dance and placed in this race last year. 'I am not asking him to do anything he hasn't before and I think he can get back to that form on Saturday.' He will saddle up another in-form galloper when Storm The Ramparts ($4.20) goes in search of a third consecutive victory in the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1000m). Storm The Ramparts will have to lug the topweight of 61.5kg after scoring back-to-back victories at the same venue this prep. 'He keeps creeping up in the weights but weights in 1000m races don't matter as much,' Pride said. 'I am happy with him. He is honest and genuine. 'He is another one that has been able to hit those soft and heavy tracks at those last three runs. 'Coming back to a track that is a soft 5 is he disadvantaged? Probably.'

Randwick Inside Mail: Gerald Ryan-trained Grebeni poised for breakthrough in 2025 Civic Stakes
Grebeni can snap a frustrating run of feature race near misses in the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou -trained Grebeni is racing very consistently without winning this preparation with four minor placings from five attempts. The striking chestnut resumed with a close third to Sandpaper in the Group 3 Newcastle Stakes before a narrow loss to Lavish Empire in the Muswellbrook Cup. Grebeni had excuses when unplaced behind Punch Lane at Randwick but he then ran a good third to Tavi Time in the Scone Cup before he ran Loch Eagle to less than a length in the Racing To Win Handicap. Ryan said there was some consideration given to saving Grebeni for a stakes race at Eagle Farm next week before it was decided to give the five-year-old his chance in the Civic Stakes. 'We were originally going to go to Eagle Farm but the way that track is racing we didn't want to risk him,'' Ryan explained. 'So, he will have this run then probably have a breather and we will get him ready for the Little Dance or the Big Dance in the spring.'' . @KPMcEvoy gets Grebeni home to win by half a length after going head to head in the last 200 with Riyazan! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 30, 2023 • Grebeni, who has drawn well in barrier four, is at $10 in latest TAB Fixed Odds betting behind Civic Stakes favourite Headley Grange at $3. 'There is good speed in the race and Grebeni is coming back to 1400m so I thought he would be off the pace to midfield,'' Ryan added. Grebeni's stablemate, Green Shadows ($14), gives Ryan and Alexiou dual representation in the Civic Stakes. Green Shadows, part-owned by popular Sky Thoroughbred Central presenter Gavin Carmody, has also returned to racing this campaign in very good form but has drawn off the track. He ran a close second to Name Dropper in the Tamworth Cup then was beaten three-quarters of a length by Headley Grange over 1300m at Randwick last start. 'Green Shadows comes in to either 14 or 16 after the scratchings,'' Ryan said. Trainer Matt Smith chasing back-to-back wins with Millie De Lune at Royal Randwick as stakes test looms
Trainer Matt Smith could be willing to contemplate a late Queensland winter carnival raid if Millie De Lune can put together back-to-back Royal Randwick victories this Saturday. Smith has the Group 3 $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m) in the back of his mind for his progressive daughter of Puissance De Lune as she prepares to tackle the Elite Sand & Soil Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m). Millie De Lune has shown an abundance of potential this preparation with two victories in five starts and scored her biggest win to date last time with a dominant win over 2000m on soft ground in town. 'She is going really good and has progressed nicely since that last run,' Smith said. 'We have tried her a couple of times on better ground and she doesn't like it much … she might be a bit better in time but I thought she would make a reasonable nice staying filly and have always thought that. 'She has taken time to come around.' It's Millie De Lune on the inside who gives @AshMorgan6 a Randwick treble! ðŸŒ @mcsmithracing @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 7, 2025 Saturday's run will determine if Smith puts Millie De Lune over more ground again or drops her back to a mile for the Queensland stakes assignment. The emerging three-year-old will already be dropping back a furlong from her last-start win when she lines up on Saturday. 'She was really strong late the other day so if we get tempo she will be fine with the drop back in trip but if not, it might be tricky from the barrier (12) as well,' Smith said. 'It's always a concern coming back in trip.' Ashley Morgan pilots Millie De Lune, which is a $3.70 favourite to continue her winning ways. Smith is also in the hunt for the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) in which Astero ($34) links up with Andrew Adkins. But Astero will need to do something he's never done in 13 attempts – win at Randwick. 'I don't know why Randwick doesn't suit him,' Smith said. 'I think at Rosehill, it suits a horse that wants a bit more speed. 'The other day he was pulling behind them and he runs his best races when he is not right up on the bridle that much. 'But he hasn't been beaten that far and his three runs this time have been better than they look.' Smith also has Time Quest ($101) as the fifth emergency.

Coffs Harbour previews: Trainer Donna Grisedale focuses on mental mastery with Piedi Veloci for racing success
His name translates as 'fast feet' but right now it's Piedi Veloci's brain that trainer Donna Grisedale is working hardest on. A three-year-old son of Widden Stud's flying machine, Supido, Grisedale 's gelding left an immediate and lasting impression when winning a barrier trial at home at Coffs Harbour in the middle of September last year. Piedi Veloci has raced three times since, and while unplaced at each of them, there was merit in all, albeit hidden from those outside his orbit. 'He's getting there,' Grisedale said. 'He is a massive work in progress this horse. Mentally not there yet, or physically, but plenty of ability. Success at @InverellRaces1 to Four Degrees who breaks his madien at start number 3! ðŸ' â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 23, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He's just got to put it all together still. He did a few things wrong there at Grafton but ran home nicely. 'Once he gets balanced and in a straight line, he just goes, but you can't be slow away and give them that much start like he did.' Piedi Veloci's assignment this week is the Northern Beaches Blues AFL Country Boosted Maiden Handicap over 1205m. 'Ideally, the 1400m would have been better suited to him, however, here at Coffs Harbour on the Heavy 9 or Heavy 10, I thought the 1200m would pull him up and test him out a bit so I'll stick to the 1200m,' Grisedale explained. Grisedale, meanwhile, is taking both a quantity and quality approach to the feature race, the Woolgoogla Diggers Cup Benchmark 82 Handicap (1305m) where he saddles-up lively trio Bow, Ostracised and Mallee Boy Express. 'Bow doesn't really appreciate the Heavy going, Soft is fine, Heavy is not really ideal for him but he's not a very good traveller so for me to just take him over the road here is an opportunity too good to knock back,' Grisedale said. This will be the second time in the space of eight days that sees stablemates Ostracised and Stage Hit descendant Mallee Boy Express square off on race day. Last Thursday at Ballina, Mallee Boy Express edged out his more fancied stable companion to win an uncommonly strong Benchmark 58 Handicap. 🚂 A tight finish at Ballina sees Mallee Boy Express get home! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 12, 2025 'Mallee Boy Express is a hard one to get a gauge on,' Grisesdale said. 'His form is up and down a lot but he just relished that Heavy track. I don't normally back any of my horses up that quickly but how could I knock it back. 'They're going to get the Heavy track again. 'And especially Ostracised, he's coming right down from 62kg down to 55kg, so that will bring him right into contention. 'It is definitely a stronger grade race, that's why we've got the 55 kilos, but hometrack, Heavy track, there are a few ticks.' Ostracised has covered more ground and had more change of address than most horses. Born at Rothwell Park in Scone, Ostracised was originally housed at Team Hawkes' Victorian lodgings. After that he went to Kody Nestor at Dubbo, Cody Morgan at Tamworth, Bjorn Baker in Sydney and now north to Grisedale's headquarters at Coffs Harbour. 'When I saw Cody Morgan at Inverell, he said this horse was a Kosciuszko horse and a Championships horse on a Heavy track,' the trainer revealed. Grisedale has 'multiple runners' in the last of the eight races on her hometown card with Speedy Target and Another Balconyboy engaged. Both are owned by former trainers with Another Balconyboy racing in Jim Jarvis' hot pink colours while Speedy Target sports the colours made internationally famous by Joe Janiak's four-legged fairytale, Takeover Target. â– â– â– â– â– Blame me, not the horse. So said trainer Todd Payne in the wake of Desert Cougar 's disappointing performance at Grafton 11 days ago. The Coffs Harbour bound chestnut's fading ninth (of 12) came 20 days after she shed her maiden status in the most emphatic fashion at Tamworth with Luke Rolls in the saddle each time. 'Definitely excuses,' Payne said. 'It was trainer error. Luke came out of the jockeys room and said we might snag her back to last and get a run up the fence and I said no, no, jump her out and push her forward and try and see if you can get the one-one. 'Silly me, in hindsight it was the wrong thing to do. It was all on me. Anyway, I'll cop that on the chin. 'She's drawn a bit wide there again but Luke will know exactly what to do and I won't give him instructions like I did last week, because they just did not work. 'It is the right sort of race for her.' Desert Cougar is the third foal of her six-time winning dam, Kalahari Princess. A granddaughter of Lion Hunter, Kalahari Princess's second foal is Payne's stable captain, Lisztomania whose second-place in this year's Country Championships Final all but guarantees him a spot in the Kosciuszko at Randwick this October. Payne, meanwhile, will make the 600km round trip from Inverell to Coffs Harbour with the former Newcastle housed gelding, Soobooco, as a partner for Desert Cougar. First sold for $100,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2021, the grandson of Snitzel next appeared at the Inglis April Online Sale in 2024 when knocked down for $9,000. The son of the now Indonesian-based stallion Sooboog, Soobooco's Payne stable debut was underwhelming to say the least, clocking in last at Tamworth on May 20. Soobooco improved dramatically when he resurfaced at Grafton 18 days later when runner-up in a Class 3 over 1120m. 'He's just an older type of horse with a few little issues,' Payne explained. 'I think he likes the wet. 'I thought he went a lot better the other day at Grafton. He just didn't show that zip that I thought he would so we have gone back to a 1000m which is his preferred distance and Luke suggested to put shades on too so we put a set of visors on him this week. 'I'm happy with him going into this, that's for sure.'

CODETTA (race 5) was hampered and taken wider by KING'S SECRET approaching the 600m. On straightening, she was again inconvenienced by King's Secret, which shifted out. Apprentice Jace McMurray told stewards that Codetta was slow to begin and settled further back than intended. He said when then unable to obtain cover Codetta was obliged to race wide throughout the event. KING'S SECRET (race 5) jumped out of the barriers and was bumped by Slinky, which shifted in.
