‘That is a great recipe': Trainer James Cummings cooks up Randwick rout with four top chances in last race
Godolphin maestro James Cummings was reluctant to rate his four sprinters but hinted the price assessors had it right with Kerguelen as favourite for the Switzerland At Coolmore Handicap (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Cummings will also saddle up Contemporary, Pereille and Razors in the Randwick closer with all four of the stable's sprinters prominent in TAB Fixed Odds betting. But Kerguelen is the $2.40 favourite even though the promising gelding is only third emergency and needs another scratching to gain a start. 'Kerguelen's going really well and it would be nice to get him into the race carrying 52kg,'' Cummings said. 'For a horse on the rise that is a great recipe.'' • A five-year-old son of former champion racehorse and sire Lonhro, Kerguelen has only been to the races six times for three wins and three seconds. But Kerguelen resumed with a strong win over the talented Brave One at Rosehill and drops 5.5kg for the Randwick sprint, albeit he is up sharply grade. 'We have been so patient with this horse,'' Cummings said. 'Although we have always held him in high regard, he's needed time to mature and I would like to think our patience will be rewarded now. 'This might be one of the drier tracks he's raced on but he's going along so sweetly and is a chance to rocket through his grades.'' 'I thought it was good work from Razors the other day in his trial and he's coming into this race looking pretty athletic for a horse coming off a long break,'' he said. Pereille ran fourth behind Headley Grange in a strong form race at Randwick last start and Cummings feels the sprinter is at his peak after two runs from a spell. 'He is going well and has come on from that last run,'' Cummings said. 'This does look a suitable race for him.'' Cummings, who will take a break from training at the end of next month before moving to Hong Kong for the 2026-27 season, also has three-year-old fillies Amusing and Glorioso entered for the Quayclean Handicap (1300m) although the trainer hinted only the former was a certain starter. 'I like the look of Amusing, her trials have been good and I'm happy for her to go back to the races,'' he said. Tough four-year-old Hooligan Tommy drops to 58kg and is at $8.50 behind Callistemon at $3.40. 'Hooligan Tommy is on top of his game and is right in the race,'' Sargent said. 'He is better on a firmer track which he will get on Saturday, and a good, hard run mile will suit him. He's worked well during the week and looks great in the coat.'' Hooligan Tommy seems to have found his niche race distance around 1600m after being tried as a stayer last season when he ran unplaced behind Riff Rocket and Ceolwulf in the ATC Australian Derby. Trainer Joe Pride expects another bold showing from 2025 Civic Stakes favourite Headley Grange
Trainer Joe Pride is yet to find Headley Grange's ceiling but expects the bombproof galloper will be up to the challenge of Saturday's Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick. Pride will launch a three-pronged attack in the feature with Headley Grange the clear pick of the litter in the main event of the 10-race card alongside Cool Jakey and Estadio Mestalla. Headley Grange has been a revelation for Pride over the past 12 months and hasn't finished worse than second in nearly a year with four wins in his past eight starts. The son of Exosphere was a well-backed favourite when scoring first-up from a break with a strong victory in Benchmark 94 grade at Randwick. 'I can't remember the last time he missed the place, he is very honest and genuine,' Pride said. 'I think he is one of those ones where you don't need the trainer to recommend him to punters. I am sure they will all pile in. 'He is the clear favourite for a reason, very consistent. I guess if you have to pick holes in what he has to do on Saturday, it's his first time in Listed grade so that has to be against him. 'The conditions of the track are neither here nor there for him. He goes just as well on wet or dry. 'The 1400m is spot on so there's seemingly not many chinks in his armour.' Headley Grange has been one of the most consistent horses in Pride's stable and has continued on an upward trajectory. 'He could well go to another level. I figure he has a ceiling there somewhere,' Pride said. 'He has got the engine there and he won like a Listed race would be well within his mark. He is a going well.' Headley Grange, to be ridden by Jason Collett, is the $2.70 favourite for the Civic Stakes with Cool Jakey at $10 and Estadio Mestalla at $23. Cool Jakey is dropping back in trip with Reece Jones aboard after leading from the front and tiring late in a mile event at Randwick a fortnight ago. • Ray & Duff's Randwick tips: Punters should plan their Exit on Saturday 'It was a mile race and he was OK at the mile on a leaderish track two starts ago but last start at a mile at the pace he went it was too far for him,' Pride said. 'Back 200m here. He has been fortunate enough to race on some wet tracks of late and it's been to his advantage. 'Saturday will be the driest he has had. It could be an issue for him.' While Estadio Mestalla is the outsider of Pride's trio, he's expecting an improved effort from the gelding. Estadio Mestalla finished five lengths off Headley Grange first-up from a break with Chad Schofield to take over the ride. 'He will run much better than his place in the market suggests,' Pride said. 'I can't quite put my finger on what happened to him first-up but he has pulled up well and is a horse that is very capable at this level. 'He has run second in a Little Dance and placed in this race last year. 'I am not asking him to do anything he hasn't before and I think he can get back to that form on Saturday.' He will saddle up another in-form galloper when Storm The Ramparts ($4.20) goes in search of a third consecutive victory in the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1000m). Storm The Ramparts will have to lug the topweight of 61.5kg after scoring back-to-back victories at the same venue this prep. 'He keeps creeping up in the weights but weights in 1000m races don't matter as much,' Pride said. 'I am happy with him. He is honest and genuine. 'He is another one that has been able to hit those soft and heavy tracks at those last three runs. 'Coming back to a track that is a soft 5 is he disadvantaged? Probably.'

Grebeni can snap a frustrating run of feature race near misses in the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou -trained Grebeni is racing very consistently without winning this preparation with four minor placings from five attempts. Trainer Matt Smith chasing back-to-back wins with Millie De Lune at Royal Randwick as stakes test looms
Trainer Matt Smith could be willing to contemplate a late Queensland winter carnival raid if Millie De Lune can put together back-to-back Royal Randwick victories this Saturday. Smith has the Group 3 $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m) in the back of his mind for his progressive daughter of Puissance De Lune as she prepares to tackle the Elite Sand & Soil Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m). Millie De Lune has shown an abundance of potential this preparation with two victories in five starts and scored her biggest win to date last time with a dominant win over 2000m on soft ground in town. 'She is going really good and has progressed nicely since that last run,' Smith said. 'We have tried her a couple of times on better ground and she doesn't like it much … she might be a bit better in time but I thought she would make a reasonable nice staying filly and have always thought that. 'She has taken time to come around.' But Astero will need to do something he's never done in 13 attempts – win at Randwick. 'I don't know why Randwick doesn't suit him,' Smith said. 'I think at Rosehill, it suits a horse that wants a bit more speed. 'The other day he was pulling behind them and he runs his best races when he is not right up on the bridle that much. 'But he hasn't been beaten that far and his three runs this time have been better than they look.' Smith also has Time Quest ($101) as the fifth emergency.

Trainer Gerald Ryan eyes winter reward before Grebeni and Green Shadows target Little Dance in spring
Trainer Gerald Ryan has one eye on a likely $750,000 Sydney spring date for Grebeni and Green Shadows but is hopeful either horse can claim a winter reward long before then at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Ryan and training partner Sterling Alexiou have both consistent stablemates prepared for this week's Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) but are sweating on a start for Green Shadows. Grebeni ($16) is in the field for the feature event while Green Shadows ($11) was stranded as the second emergency for the race. The early scratching of Another One has enhanced Green Shadows chances of making the field. Both Ryan and Alexiou horses are nearing the end of their winter campaigns after already ticking an important box this campaign by gaining Big Dance-Little Dance eligibility. Grebeni has placed in four of his five starts this preparation with his second to Lavish Empire in March's Muswellbrook Cup assuring him a run in the Little Dance. The son of Ocean Park can sign off on his campaign in style in the Civic Stakes. 'Grebeni will stop after this,' Ryan said. 'He has won just on $100,000 and hasn't won a race this time in. 'He has been a consistent horse. He has his issues but he has been consistent and puts in every time he goes around as long as he has firmer footing underneath him. 'After his break, he will come back and hopefully hit the (Little Dance) third-up.' A spell isn't too far away for Green Shadows either despite the gelding only having two starts this preparation. Green Shadows has been runner-up in both his runs this time in but snared all-important Big Dance-Little Dance eligibility with a first-up second to Name Dropper in the Tamworth Cup. 'We won't go too far now,' Ryan said. 'He went into the Big Dance last year at the end of a long prep of about seven or eight runs. 'Now he is qualified for the Little Dance, we just poke along quietly and probably only give him two more runs before a breather and get him ready properly for it.' In-form apprentice Braith Nock will continue his recent association with Green Shadows if the gelding gets a start in the Civic Stakes.
