In an era where warfare is increasingly defined by speed, stealth, and supremacy in the skies, fifth-generation fighter jets have become the ultimate symbols of military might. As nations race to outpace one another in aerospace technology, the United States, China, and Russia lead the charge, each wielding their own cutting-edge aircraft. But among them, one machine continues to soar above the rest, the US-built F-22 Raptor.
Developed jointly by Lockheed Martin and Boeing, the F-22 Raptor was first tested in 1997 and officially inducted into the US Air Force by 2005. With a minuscule radar cross-section, the F-22 is nearly invisible to enemy radar systems, allowing it to infiltrate hostile airspace undetected.
Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 engines generating a combined 70,000 pounds of thrust, the jet is capable of 'supercruise", sustained supersonic flight without the use of fuel-guzzling afterburners. It cruises at speeds exceeding Mach 1.5 (approximately 1,850 km/h) and can climb to altitudes over 50,000 feet.
Its agility in the air is unmatched, thanks to thrust vectoring technology that allows the jet to pivot and roll with astonishing precision. In dogfights, this maneuverability makes it nearly impossible to pin down.
Equipped with the AN/APG-77 radar, the jet can detect and track enemies at long range. With sensor fusion technology, it delivers a 360-degree battlefield view to its pilot, offering a critical edge in complex air combat situations.
Weapons-wise, the Raptor carries a lethal mix. It can house six AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, two AIM-9 Sidewinders, a 1,000-pound GBU-32 JDAM smart bomb, and a 20mm M61A2 Vulcan cannon with 480 rounds, making it equally deadly against both airborne and ground threats.
The F-22 was designed for air superiority. It's faster, topping Mach 2.25 (nearly 2,700 km/h), and more agile due to its advanced thrust vectoring. The F-35, on the other hand, is a versatile, multi-role combat aircraft tailored for a broader range of missions: air-to-ground strikes, electronic warfare, and intelligence gathering.
It comes in three variants for the Air Force (F-35A), Marines (F-35B for vertical landing), and Navy (F-35C for carrier operations). Though slower and less nimble, the F-35's strength lies in its adaptability and digital warfare capabilities, including its AN/APG-81 radar and Electro-Optical Targeting System.
Despite its staggering capabilities, the F-22 remains exclusive to the United States. In 1998, Congress enacted a strict ban on its export, citing the need to safeguard its highly classified stealth and avionics systems. The fear? That this top-tier technology might fall into adversarial hands.
Indeed, those fears weren't unfounded. In 2016, China was caught attempting to steal design blueprints of the F-22, F-35, and C-130 transport aircraft. Since then, Washington has doubled down on keeping the Raptor within American borders.
Allies such as Japan, Israel, and Australia have repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the F-22. In one case, Lockheed Martin even proposed a hybrid model combining features of the F-22 and F-35 for Japan. But concerns over cost and export laws killed the deal. Instead, the US has promoted the more widely available – and export-friendly – F-35, which shares some DNA with the Raptor but lacks its specialised air dominance pedigree.
India recently greenlit its own 5th-gen Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. While promising, it remains years away from operational deployment. For now, India, like many others, watches from the sidelines as the trio of aerial superpowers – the US, China, and Russia – unfold their futuristic wings.

SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son is reportedly planning a massive AI and robotics industrial zone in Arizona, a project that could cost up to $1 trillion if fully developed. The project, previously referred to as Project Crystal Land , aims to create a US-based manufacturing ecosystem for artificial intelligence and robotics technologies. The proposed site, informally dubbed the Arizona AI megaproject , is being compared to China's innovation and manufacturing hub. The project, as per reports, includes research and development labs, semiconductor production units, housing for tech workers, and integration with smart grid systems. Talks with Samsung, TSMC and US government Son has allegedly held discussions with major tech players like Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), as well as US government officials, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, to seek support for the initiative. The plan follows SoftBank's growing investments in artificial intelligence. The company recently committed $19 billion to Trump's Stargate Project, a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Oracle's Larry Ellison. SoftBank has also invested $40 billion in OpenAI and spent $6.5 billion to acquire Ampere Computing. To fund the Arizona project, SoftBank is likely to adopt a project-based financing model, similar to the approach used in oil pipeline development. This would reduce upfront capital needs while using the firm's existing $23 billion liquidity and its stake in Arm Holdings as collateral. Following the reports, SoftBank's stock rose by 2%, while TSMC shares increased by 1.9%, reflecting market optimism around the potential scale and impact of the project. No formal timelines or construction details have been confirmed yet. The project's future will depend heavily on regulatory approval and securing support from industry partners and federal agencies. YouTuber Gaurav Taneja, also known as Flying Beast, lauded the Air India pilots for refusing to fly unsafe aircraft after the unfortunate crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Contrary to this, the ex-pilot revealed that airlines habitually overlooked the safety measures, resulting in such tragic incidents. He ruled out bad weather as one of the significant reasons behind the incident and went on to explain the loopholes of the airlines. In a well-informed video on his YouTube channel, Taneja highlighted the safety standards in the Indian aviation industry while addressing various theories about the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash. He said the dual-engine failure was possibly the only reason the Air India flight crashed. 'In the event of bad weather, the aircraft warns the pilots to either delay takeoff or abort takeoff… A 787 has two radars, one on the left and one on the right. For dispatch, it is necessary for at least one to be functional," he said. He continued, 'If the aircraft has 100 pieces of equipment, the rulebook says that it can function even if 30 of them have failed. For instance, an aircraft can fly safely with even one functional weather radar. This is made to operationally assist the airline," further mentioning, 'Let's go with the theory that one engine failed on the ground and the other failed after takeoff… This theory makes a little sense. However, according to Taneja, the airlines often neglect to inform pilots about the MCAS system (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), a flight control system developed by Boeing, specifically for the 737 MAX aircraft, which was designed to enhance the aircraft's stability and wondered what if a different software issue could have caused the Air India crash. Further, highlighting the safety standards of the airlines, he said, 'A pilot told me that aircraft are in a pathetic state. Remember I told you about the MELs (Minimum Equipment Lists), and that a plane can fly with even one working radar? These snags are quite common. Every flight has snags. But they have a habit of overlooking these snags." For every snag that happens, a live report goes to the company. The company knows everything. The company is okaying these snags despite knowing about them, and leaving it to the pilot to deal with these snags during the flight," and puts direct blame on the internal conflicts between the internal departments, which ultimately results in such a situation. At least 274 people, including 241 of the 242 onboard the London-bound Air India flight, died when the Dreamliner 787-8 crashed moments after take-off in Ahmedabad. While Pakistan is restricted to most of its arms imports from China, India has two options with regards to purchasing a next-gen fighter aircraft– the Sukhoi Su-57E from Russia, or the US-made F-35A. India, Russia talks underway on possible Su-57E deal? Though no official announcement has been made, a report has claimed that talks are underway between India and Russia regarding the purchase of Su-57E stealth fighter jet. The report by the Defense Security Asia website, which has created a stir among defense analysts and strategic circles, stated that India wants indigenous integration and technology as part of the Su-57 deal with Russia, which will enable the country to indigenously manufacture 5th-gen fighters in the coming future. India wants indigenous radar in Su-57E As per the report, India wants Russia to replace several main systems, especially the radar, of the Su-57E with Indian-made parts. But India's demand has created concern and dissatisfaction in Russian defense department. India claims that the Russian N036 'Byelka' AESA radar used in the Su-57E, does not meet the requirements of a 5th-generation stealth aircraft, as its not jamming-proofs, and faces issues in areas like long-range detection and energy saving. India wants Byelka AESA radar on the Su-57E to be replaced with its indigenously-developed Uttam and Virupaksha AESA radars, which are Gallium Nitride (GaN) based, while their Russian counterpart used the older gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology. According to Indian experts, Indian-made radars provide better heat control, accurate signal capture capability and high jamming resistance, which is extremely important in modern warfare. F-35A or Su-57, which 5th-gen fighter will India buy? Earlier this year, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, US President Donald Trump had offered to sell the 5th-generation F-35 stealth fighter jet to India. Shortly after the announcement, news broke that Russia, New Delhi's trusted defence partner and top weapons supplier, has offered an even more enticing deal on the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet, offering to sell the 5th-gen fighter to India as well as an assured transfer of technology, something which the US is unwilling to do.
