Mets at Phillies prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends, and stats for June 20

NBC Sports5 hours ago

It's Friday, June 20 and the Mets (45-30) are in Philadelphia to take on the Phillies (45-30). Blade Tidwell is slated to take the mound for New York against Zack Wheeler for Philadelphia.
The Phillies are 7-1 in the last eight games and 8-2 over the past 10 to follow up a 0-5 and 1-9 stretch of play. Philadelphia took three out of four against Miami despite outscoring the Marlins 14-13.
The Mets are on a six-game losing streak after being swept by Tampa Bay and Atlanta. New York has scored 14 runs in that span with three games of one or fewer run.
New York swept Philadelphia earlier this season at home, so this appears to be good timing for the Phillies to win the series and attempt to extract revenge in the form of a series sweep.

Yankees activate Luke Weaver after the right-hander missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees activated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the injured list Friday after he missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring. Weaver was injured warming up before a June 1 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game on Tuesday after throwing side sessions. Weaver has a 1.05 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 24 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27. A 31-year-old right-hander who can become a free agent this autumn, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to appear on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021, though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Sandridge was called up Thursday when Yerry De los Santos went on the injured list with right elbow discomfort. ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox reactions: Rookie homers, Lucas Giolito K's 10 in post-Rafael Devers Era win

SEATTLE — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners here at T-Mobile Park on Friday. 1) The Red Sox improved to 1-0 in the post-Rafael Devers Era. It marked their sixth straight win and ninth victory in 11 games as they improved to two games over .500 (38-36). Advertisement 2) Roman Anthony belted his first MLB home run in the first inning. It was a 391-foot blast to right field and left his bat with a 104 mph exit velocity. The rookie hit it in his seventh career big league game and 20th plate appearance. He connected on a 96.2 mph sinker from Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert with the count even 2-2. 3) Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito got to work after loading the bases with no outs on three straight singles to begin the bottom of the third inning. He struck out J.P. Crawford, Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh all swinging. It was the first time in Giolito's career that he struck out the side with the bases loaded without giving up a run. And it was the first time a Red Sox pitcher has done it since Brad Ziegler on Aug. 13, 2016 vs Arizona, according to the Red Sox game notes. Advertisement 4) Giolito pitched 6 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 10. It marked his 17th career double-digit strikeout game. It also marked the sixth time in his career he has gone 6 or more scoreless innings while striking out 10 or more batters. 5) Boston went ahead 2-0 in the third inning. Jarren Duran tripled with two outs and Abraham Toro singled him home. 6) Duran is tied for the MLB-lead in triples with eight. 7) Greg Weissert walked the first two batters in the eighth inning, but then got Julio Rodriguez to line out to center field, Cal Raleigh to strike out swinging and Jorge Polanco to pop out to third base. Advertisement 8) The Red Sox and Mariners will play here again Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. eastern. Righty Walker Buehler (5-4, 5.01 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Mariners righty Bryan Woo (5-4, 3.39 ERA). More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Depending on how you look at it, this is either the best or worst time for the Mets to play a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies. On one hand, you could say that a series with the Phils is just what the doctor ordered to snap the Mets out of their current funk. The Amazins have lost six in a row to the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves, which has allowed the Phillies to get on even terms with the Mets (45-30) atop the NL East. What better opponent to get back on track against than your biggest rival, who just happens to be tied with you for first place right before the midway point of the season? On the other hand, you could say this is terrible timing, as the Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10, and should be buoyant about their chances of pulling in front of the Mets in the standings. No matter how you look at it, you'll need to come to terms with the odds, which have the Phillies as a decided favorite for Game 1 of this pivotal series. Mets vs. Phillies odds Team Moneyline Mets +164 Phillies -196 Odds via FanDuel Mets vs. Phillies betting preview The reason that the Phillies are such a decided favorite is because they have Zack Wheeler on the mound opposite Blade Tidwell, who is making just the second start of his career. A former second-round pick in 2022, Tidwell has pitched to a 4.76 ERA in 13 outings for Triple-A Syracuse this season. He made his MLB debut on May 4 against the Cardinals, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. Obviously, having Tidwell start a game of this magnitude is not ideal for the Mets, let alone against Wheeler. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The former Met has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since leaving Queens, but he could be putting together his best season yet. The 35-year-old has pitched to a 2.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 88 innings. Wheeler's peripheral numbers also stand out, as his 11.25 strikeouts per 9 innings would be a career-best, as would his 2.34 xERA. Zack Wheeler is averaging over 11 strikeouts per 9 innings this season. AP Mets vs. Phillies pick It may be a bit jarring to see the Phillies close to -200 against a team with the same exact record (and a much better run differential), but this pitching matchup is stacked in the home team's favor. As long as Wheeler is on point, the Phils should be able to get separation in this game and get home as comfortable winners.
