Depending on how you look at it, this is either the best or worst time for the Mets to play a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.
On one hand, you could say that a series with the Phils is just what the doctor ordered to snap the Mets out of their current funk.
The Amazins have lost six in a row to the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves, which has allowed the Phillies to get on even terms with the Mets (45-30) atop the NL East.
What better opponent to get back on track against than your biggest rival, who just happens to be tied with you for first place right before the midway point of the season?
On the other hand, you could say this is terrible timing, as the Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10, and should be buoyant about their chances of pulling in front of the Mets in the standings.
No matter how you look at it, you'll need to come to terms with the odds, which have the Phillies as a decided favorite for Game 1 of this pivotal series.

Mets vs. Phillies betting preview
The reason that the Phillies are such a decided favorite is because they have Zack Wheeler on the mound opposite Blade Tidwell, who is making just the second start of his career.
A former second-round pick in 2022, Tidwell has pitched to a 4.76 ERA in 13 outings for Triple-A Syracuse this season. He made his MLB debut on May 4 against the Cardinals, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Obviously, having Tidwell start a game of this magnitude is not ideal for the Mets, let alone against Wheeler.

The former Met has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since leaving Queens, but he could be putting together his best season yet.
The 35-year-old has pitched to a 2.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 88 innings. Wheeler's peripheral numbers also stand out, as his 11.25 strikeouts per 9 innings would be a career-best, as would his 2.34 xERA.
Zack Wheeler is averaging over 11 strikeouts per 9 innings this season.

Mets vs. Phillies pick
It may be a bit jarring to see the Phillies close to -200 against a team with the same exact record (and a much better run differential), but this pitching matchup is stacked in the home team's favor.
As long as Wheeler is on point, the Phils should be able to get separation in this game and get home as comfortable winners.
THE PLAY: Phillies -1.5 (+105, FanDuel)

Blade Tidwell sharper in second Mets' spot start despite little notice: ‘Just hopped in the car'

Try it free PHILADELPHIA — After a rainout in Syracuse, Blade Tidwell was finished for the day. He was about to begin playing some 'Fortnite' on Thursday night when his plans changed. The pitching-desperate Mets burned Justin Hagenman's arm in relief in their finale in Atlanta. So at about 10 p.m., Tidwell was told he was starting Friday. To make roster space for Tidwell, the Mets optioned Hagenman 'Just hopped in the car,' Tidwell said, he and his girlfriend making the 4 ½-hour trip south and preparing in a hurry for one of the better offenses in baseball. Tidwell was better, if not excellent, in an emergency spot start during a 10-2, series-opening loss to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. After a May 4 debut in St. Louis went wayward — six runs in 3 ²/₃ innings — the 24-year-old prospect held his own over three scoreless innings. Blade Tidwell throws a pitch during the first inning of the Mets' 10-2 blowout loss to the Phillies on June 20, 2025. AP He ran into trouble in a fourth inning he would not escape, perhaps a victim of circumstance. For the first time all season, he was starting consecutive games on four days' rest. He typically gets at least five days' rest with Syracuse. In his outing Sunday, he had thrown just 66 pitches. For that reason, manager Carlos Mendoza did not want to give him much of a leash. Tidwell did well to induce a ground ball from Otto Kemp, but the Brett Baty-Jeff McNeil-Pete Alonso turn was a half-step slow, allowing the game's first run to score. The righty was pulled at 74 pitches, having allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four, and Jose Castillo entered and allowed one more run to score. 'I thought the fastball had life. I thought the cutter, shorter slider, to go with the sweeper, was a lot better, as well,' Mendoza said. Tidwell added: 'It went better than the last, but there's still work to be done.'

Mets' Juan Soto just needed to play Rockies to hit dingers again

The post Mets' Juan Soto just needed to play Rockies to hit dingers again appeared first on ClutchPoints. As New York Mets star Juan Soto snapped his 17-game home run drought on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, he would hit another one on Sunday afternoon, making it back-to-back games with a dinger. While some may think that Juan Soto has been disappointing with the Mets thus far, what was needed for him to get back on track was likely to face the Rockies. Advertisement During New York's 5-3 win over lowly Colorado, Soto would hit a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the team a two-run cushion. It's the 10th home run of the season so far with Soto as the ball looked huge coming to the plate, with the star capitalizing on it. Many teams have got the upper hand on the Rockies since they're 9-50 on the season, as it could have been what Soto needed to live up to his over $700 million contract. Speaking after Saturday's game, Soto acknowledged there is a 'long way to go,' according to ESPN. 'It's a great feeling when you feel the support like that,' Soto said. 'There's still a long way to go. It feels good, but we've got to keep working.' Mets' Juan Soto headed in the right direction Brad Penner-Imagn Images With Soto achieving some history with the Mets, the back-to-back games with a home run are a great step in the right direction, as he had a relatively slow start to the season. New York manager Carlos Mendoza spoke after Saturday's contest about his swing. Advertisement 'He put a really good swing on it,' Mendoza said. 'For him to hit it out of the ballpark like that on a day that the conditions are not in his favor, that's pretty impressive.' The 8-2 win on Saturday included Soto hitting a home run shortly after Brandon Nimmo, who said that 'it's a sign of good things to come.' 'Francisco [Lindor] and I were doing our picture down there,' Nimmo said. 'Heard the sound of the bat and the crowd going wild. We looked out and were able to see him go the other way. That's when he's the best. I think weather's starting to heat up, we're flipping the script into June, this field will start to play a little more fair. I think it's just a sign of good things to come, great to go back-to-back with him.' New York starts a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night as they are first in the AL East with a 37-22 record.
