Yiwugo App Sees Overseas Downloads Surge as Hiking Poles and Fitness Equipment Sales Skyrocket
YIWU, China, April 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Yiwugo.com, the official website of the Yiwu Commodity Market, is the largest commodity wholesale market in the world. Since April 14, 2025, the downloads of the Yiwugo app has surged by 200% in the Trending and Top Free charts of Google Play, driven by international tariff policy adjustments. The app has climbed into the top 30—and even top 10—download rankings across shopping app lists in countries such as the U.S., France, and Malaysia. Many merchants on the platform have reported a notable increase in direct inquiries from international buyers.
According to the Yiwu Index, the outdoor and leisure product sales in Yiwu market exceeded 2 billion yuan in 2024, maintaining an annual growth rate of approximately 9%, underscoring significant market potential. As an emerging sector, outdoor sports equipment has demonstrated robust performance in both domestic and international markets.
Big data analysis conducted by Yiwugo also reveals that transaction volumes for hiking poles doubled year-on-year between January 1 and April 1, 2025. Growing enthusiasm for mountaineering, hiking, and skiing has fueled domestic demand, while markets in Europe, the U.S., Russia, and Malaysia have also driven a spike in orders. Additionally, the National Health Commission's advocacy for balanced diets and weight management has sparked a wave of purchases for fitness and weight-loss equipment across China.
Zhu Jinming, owner of Haoyang Outdoor Articles Firm which has specialized in mid-to-high-end hiking poles for over two decades, noted a steady rise in orders from clients in Russia and Brazil since 2021. One long-term Russian client, purchasing from Haoyang since 2007, now places annual orders exceeding 1 million yuan. The durable materials and reliable after-sales service of the company keep clients returning, even after trying other suppliers.
Similarly, Haoyang also performs well in the domestic market, with an average of around 500 cases per scenic spot during peak tourist seasons like 'May Day' at destinations such us Mount Huangshan and Mount Sanqingshan.
Yan Peng, founder of Linuo Vanguard Sport, has been a stalwart in Yiwu for over two decades, serving clients primarily from Europe, North America, and beyond. The company's flagship products—dumbbells, barbells, and exercise bikes—have become synonymous with quality. By investing hundreds of yuan more per ton in chrome plating to ensure rust resistance, or adding an extra inner cloth layer to sandbags to prevent leakage, Linuo has cemented clients' trust over 20 years. This dedication has also drawn growing recognition through the Yiwugo platform and word-of-mouth referrals.
One Spanish client family spanning two generations has collaborated with Yan for nearly eight years. Since partnering with Linuo, their order volume has doubled, with each shipment now amounting to at least one container.
Domestically, Yan notes a clear surge in sales of home fitness equipment like dumbbells, barbells, and competition bikes, driven by China's national push for fitness and weight management. 'Purchasing trends are shifting toward more professional-grade gear,' he observes.
The philosophy of embracing nature and prioritizing health has transcended elite circles, evolving into a lifestyle embraced by billions worldwide. As transaction figures pulse on the Yiwugo platform in early 2025, they may well hint at the blueprint of the next global trend.

Trump says the US doesn't have to meet NATO spending goal
President Donald Trump said Friday that the U.S. shouldn't have to abide by the same defense spending standards as the rest of NATO — potentially antagonizing leaders from the rest of the alliance days before he's to meet with them in The Netherlands. Trump has long demanded that NATO states spend 5 percent of their GDP on defense but has never said if the U.S. should be included in that or not. The U.S. is currently at 3.4 percent. 'I don't think we should, but I think they should,' he said, responding to a question about his 5 percent defense spending goal. 'We've been supporting NATO so long. … So I don't think we should, but I think that the NATO countries should, absolutely,' he added. The summit kicks off Tuesday in The Hague with the leaders of 32 member states coming together to plan spending goals and reaffirm NATO force structure and deployment plans. Most NATO states spend just over 2 percent of their GDP on defense currently, with a growing number having outlined plans to get to around 3 percent over the next year or two. Trump's spending demand has hovered over the alliance since his reelection however, and the alliance has come up with a novel solution: Call for 3.5 percent on defense, with the remaining 1.5 percent taken up by domestic infrastructure and cybersecurity spending. Trump's apparent opting out of the higher target is unlikely to sit well with Republicans on Capitol Hill who've pushed for larger Pentagon budgets and have clashed with the administration over defense spending. Both Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), the chairs of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees respectively, have been pushing to drive U.S. defense spending to 5 percent of GDP. They and other GOP leaders criticized Trump's budget plans for keeping annual defense funding flat, save a one-time investment from Republicans' megabill of spending and tax cuts. Hitting that goal would mean a roughly $1.4 trillion defense budget for the Pentagon. Only Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have committed to 5 percent number so far, but most of the rest of the alliance is expected to follow suit at The Hague. There are outlines, however. The Spanish government, which is one of the lowest spenders on defense in the alliance, flatly rejected the 5 percent goal this week. In a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte obtained by POLITICO, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said his government 'cannot commit to a specific spending target in terms of GDP at this summit.' Other allies who have spent more on defense in recent years are also grappling with how to keep pumping more money into their militaries. 'We have to find a realistic compromise between what is necessary and what is possible, really, to spend,' Germany's defense minister, Boris Pistorius said this month during a NATO meeting in Brussels. Seth Jones, president of the defense and security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in a press call Friday that U.S. defense spending, at 3.4 percent of GDP, is 'lower than during any time during the Cold War,' and the Trump administration's defense budget as a percentage of GDP 'is likely to be lower than the Carter administration's defense budget in the 1970s.' Connor O'Brien contributed to this report.

Microsoft to reportedly cut thousands of jobs, focusing on sales teams
Microsoft is reportedly planning to cut thousands of jobs, primarily targeting its sales workforce, according to Bloomberg. The layoffs are part of an effort to streamline operations amid significant investments in AI infrastructure. The company is spending heavily on servers and data centres to support AI development. The job cuts are expected to be announced in early July 2025, following the close of Microsoft's fiscal year. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the reductions will mainly affect sales teams but may extend to other areas. The timing could still shift, and the company has not provided official comments, the report said. In April, Microsoft informed employees it would rely more on third-party firms to manage software sales to small and mid-size customers. This follows a previous round of layoffs in May 2025, which eliminated 6,000 positions, mostly in product and engineering roles, while largely preserving customer-facing teams such as sales and marketing. Earlier in June 2025, reports emerged that Microsoft is planning to reduce more than 300 jobs as part of its cost management strategy. In May 2025, Microsoft reduced its global workforce by about 3%, affecting around 6,000 employees across various levels and regions. The AI boom has significantly affected the tech labour market, with companies prioritising AI-focused roles and leveraging AI technology to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. As of June 2024, Microsoft employed approximately 228,000 full-time employees, with 55% based in the US. The company continues to implement organisational changes to position itself for success in a rapidly evolving market. Recently, reports of Microsoft Rus, the company's subsidiary in Russia, filing for bankruptcy also surfaced. This followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's statements against foreign service providers acting against Russian interests. "Microsoft to reportedly cut thousands of jobs, focusing on sales teams" was originally created and published by Verdict, a GlobalData owned brand.
