Year before retirement, traffic cop gets 4-year jail for bribery

Time of India09-06-2025

New Delhi: A court sentenced a
Delhi Traffic Police
officer, who was just a year short of retirement, to four years in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a driver.
The court of special judge Deepali Sharma observed, "Corruption is one of the most significant barriers in the growth of the country.
The PC (Prevention of Corruption) Act was formulated to bring about transparency and honesty in public life and to combat corruption in govt departments.
"
The court was hearing a case against assistant sub-inspector Yatender Kumar, who was posted at a traffic police booth at Pul Mithai Chowk, at the time of the incident. He was convicted on June 4 under Prevention of Corruption Act for demanding and obtaining gratification other than legal remuneration—bribes—from a man in lieu of releasing his impounded vehicle in Sept 2022.
Kumar requested the court for leniency, citing his age of 59 years and that he was the sole breadwinner of his family, as well as his clean antecedents. The judge noted that Kumar abused his position in public office for his personal gain. "Considering the ramifications of the offence and the victimisation of the public at large, and also considering the impact of the offence on society, the convict does not deserve any leniency from the court," the judge said.

Opposing Kumar's plea, the prosecution submitted before the court that corruption was a menace to society and needed to be eradicated to restore the faith of people in good governance, as it adversely affected the progress of the country and corroded the entire system. Hence, no leniency should be shown to the convict, the prosecution argued. TNN

Bizman duped of 51.8L by share-trading co

Kolkata: A 37-year-old restaurant owner from south Kolkata has filed a complaint against a share-trading company for allegedly defrauding him of Rs 51.8 lakh through unauthorised deductions and questionable trading practices. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The businessman reported that he was approached by a company executive in early May, and after initial discussions about investment opportunities, the complainant transferred the funds through multiple transactions. However, when attempting to withdraw his investments on June 12, the complainant was informed about a mandatory 10% service tax deduction, which he claims violates Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulations. "This appears to be a replica of a modus operandi now being used by cyber crooks targeting business owners. We are investigating similar complaints against the same organisation," said an officer. The anti-bank fraud section at Lalbazar has also launched an investigation into the matter, focusing on the company's trading licences and regulatory compliance. Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused company may have targeted several other investors in the region using similar tactics. Cops have advised investors to verify trading companies' credentials through SEBI's official channels before making substantial investments. "Licensed trading firms cannot impose arbitrary service tax on withdrawals," an official said. Cops have registered a case and the cyber cell is tracking the digital trail of the transferred funds.

Couple killed in Hazaribag as portion of roof collapses

1 2 3 Hazaribag: A couple was killed after a part of the roof of their house collapsed at Rasoidhamna village under Barhi police station limits here on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Johan Tudu, Barhi sub-divisional officer, said the deceased were identified as Hadis Ansari (52) and his wife Zamira Khatun (48). Zamira was also a ward member of the Rasoidhamna panchayat. "They were sleeping in their room when the roof of their thatched house collapsed, killing them on the spot," he said. While the SDO said there was no rain during the time of the collapse, recent heavy downpour might have led to the roof's collapse. Other members of the family, who were sleeping in separate rooms, were unharmed. "Relief and rescue operations have started, and compensation will be provided as per govt rule. The debris is being cleared by the rescue team," Tudu said. The district administration will now survey old houses to take corrective measure to prevent such incidents, officials said. The couple had five children. While one of the girls was married off, the remaining children are minors. "We have paid an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the next of the kin for their last rites. A sum of Rs 4 lakh in compensation will be given to the kin from the state disaster management coffers after documentation process is over." The administration has also provided 50kg ration so that the deceased couple's children do not starve.

Call of duty: Police ring in relief, return 265 stolen phones

New Delhi: For many, a stolen phone is a lost cause, a frustration resigned to memory. However, Delhi Police 's Crime Branch has brought a smile — and solace — on the faces of 265 individuals, achieving a remarkable feat of recovering their mobile devices. As part of its ongoing initiative, Operation Track Back–II, the Crime Branch recovered these stolen mobile phones and handed them over to their verified owners at an event held at Police Headquarters on Monday. The operation also led to the arrest of 29 individuals and helped solve 72 related cases. This event marked the second such mass handover since Feb, when 216 phones were returned under the first phase of the initiative. According to Devesh Srivastava, special commissioner of police (Crime), the special programme is aimed at strengthening the cops' connection with the citizens. "Recognising the incidents of mobile phone theft in Delhi-NCR and the associated risks to citizens' personal data and security, the Crime Branch launched the operation with the tag line that says 'Returning happiness to the citizens'. We made a significant breakthrough in tracking and recovering stolen and lost phones," Srivastava said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The officer added, "The initiative aims to provide relief to innocent victims who suffer distress due to the loss or theft of their valuable mobile devices. Besides solving heinous cases, these are small steps which can restore happiness to common people." The latest operation follows months of targeted raids and investigations by teams from various units of the Crime Branch. Among the key recoveries, a team led by inspector Gurmeet Singh seized 117 phones over four months from several accused individuals. Of these, 25 devices were tied to online FIRs and 34 were flagged in lost reports, both from Delhi and other states. Another team arrested two men and recovered 40 stolen phones, an office revealed. However, restoring the phones to their owners was not easy. According to joint commissioner Surendra Kumar, many phones were either locked or completely drained, rendering the task of determining their owners challenging. "There were a large number of recovered devices and linking these phones to the registered FIRs and lost reports required meticulous efforts. But the team did a remarkable job," Kumar said. The process involved using a combination of technical tools and investigative techniques, particularly IMEI analysis, according to sources. A team of police officers spent several hours tracking IMEI numbers, FIRs and the new numbers of phone users whose stolen devices they had recovered. The laborious task required the team to meticulously sift through volumes of data for details and follow up on every lead to identify the rightful owners of the phones. Despite the complexity and time-intensive nature of the effort, the team successfully reunited many stolen devices with their owners. Delhi Police has urged citizens to promptly file e-FIRs and keep IMEI numbers safe to aid recovery.
