Simba seal semi-final berth after penalty triumph over Al Masry
Published: Wednesday, 09 April 2025
Tanzanian giants Simba SC overcame a two-goal first-leg deficit to knock Egypt's Al Masry out of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup in dramatic fashion, winning 4-1 on penalties after a 2-0 win in regulation time in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.
Goals in the first half from Elie Mpanzu and Steven Mukwala gave Simba the cushion they needed to level the tie on aggregate, following their defeat by the same scoreline in the first leg in Suez.
The shootout saw the home side dispatch four well-taken penalties, while Al Masry missed two of their three attempts. Simba storm back to level the tie
Backed by a vocal crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Simba wasted no time asserting dominance. Mpanzu opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing off a solo run with a precise shot past Mahmoud Gad in the Al Masry goal.
Just ten minutes later, Mukwala doubled the lead with a powerful header that left the goalkeeper stranded.
The first half was marred by stoppages, including an injury to Al Masry's Beninese defender Samadou, who was later substituted. Despite their efforts to respond, the Egyptians struggled to gain a foothold in the match. VAR drama and missed chances
Al Masry looked brighter in the second half after introducing Mido Gaber and Mohamed Hashem. A controversial moment arose when Simba were awarded a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned after a VAR check.
Mahmoud Gad redeemed himself with several crucial saves, denying Simba from extending their lead in open play. However, he couldn't repeat those heroics during the penalty shootout. Penalty heartbreak for the Egyptians
In the shootout, Simba were flawless. Jean Ahoua, Mukwala, Kibu Dennis, and Shomari Kapombe all converted their penalties with clinical precision.
Al Masry, on the other hand, faltered under pressure. Fakhreddine Ben Youssef was the only scorer, while both Mido Gaber and Mahmoud Hamada failed to convert, sealing their side's elimination.
The result ends Al Masry's hopes of returning to the Confederation Cup semi-finals, a stage they last reached in 2018.
For Simba, it marks a major milestone as they head into the semi-finals, awaiting the winner between Zamalek and Stellenbosch.

Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall
Taarek Refaat A tragic accident overshadowed MC Algiers' (Mouloudia Club d'Alger) celebration of its ninth Algerian Ligue 1 title on Saturday, after a fan died and 11 others were injured in a fall from the upper stands of the July 5 Stadium. MC Algiers secured its second consecutive league title with a goalless draw against NC Magra on the final day of the season. However, the joy quickly turned into sorrow when several supporters fell from the southern upper stands shortly after the final whistle and before the championship trophy ceremony could begin. — abd ennacer el bar/عبد الناصر البار (@nasronasro1988) June 21, 2025 The Algerian Civil Protection agency released a statement confirming the incident: 'One death has been recorded and 11 others sustained injuries. Emergency medical teams provided on-site assistance and transported the injured to hospital for further care.' The statement also noted that a mobile medical unit was set up inside the stadium and that ten ambulances were dispatched from the National Training and Intervention Unit. Ceremony Postponed, Mourning Nationwide In response to the incident, the title ceremony was postponed as emergency responders secured the area. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune publicly mourned the deceased fan, expressing his condolences to the family and the MC Algiers community via social media. The deceased has not yet been officially identified, and an investigation is reportedly underway to determine the cause of the fall. Witnesses at the scene said the crowd had surged forward in celebration, leading to a partial collapse or slip near the barrier of the upper tier. A Night of Mixed Emotions For MC Algiers, the title marks a historic achievement — the club's ninth national league championship and a rare back-to-back win — but the emotional high has been deeply muted by the tragedy. League officials, players, and fans have expressed their sorrow, calling for improved safety measures in stadiums and crowd management during major events. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is expected to issue a statement and may open a review of stadium protocols for large-scale fixtures. read more 2 Most Inspirational Green Projects in Egypt AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT to Strive over Viewership Tonight Egypt Marks 70th Anniv. of 2011 Revolution, National Police Day In Depth: WWE NXT Halloween Havoc In Depth: AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT Tuesday Viewership Strive Videos & Features WATCH: Egyptians Break Ramadan Fasts in Matariya Videos & Features GrEEk Campus Hosts Jobzella Fifth Career Fair Videos & Features 3 Iconic Ramadan Songs of All Times Videos & Features Top 4 Destinations to Visit in Upper Egypt News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Messi strikes as Inter Miami stun Porto at Club World Cup
The Argentine superstar found the top corner with a second half set-piece to clinch a surprise victory for the MLS side and give them a strong chance of progressing from Group A. Inter Miami and Palmeiras have four points each, after the Brazilian side beat Ahly 2-0 earlier on -- the Egyptians like Porto have one point. Samu Aghehowa's early penalty gave the Portuguese side the lead as they had the better of the first half and could have scored more. However Telasco Segovia blasted Miami level and then Messi's free-kick helped them claim a noteworthy scalp, in a match many thought would be straightforward for Porto. Co-owned by former England international David Beckham, Inter Miami played their first MLS match in 2020 and signed Messi in 2023, raising their profile significantly. This was the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, in their second encounter after Chelsea beat Los Angeles FC earlier in the week. Even with Messi, arguably the face of the tournament, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium was under half-full at kick-off, hamstrung by another 3:00 pm kick-off on a working day as it was for Chelsea's opener at the venue. More fans entered throughout the game, keen to get a glimpse of the 37-year-old widely considered to be the game's greatest ever player, with nearly 32,000 present in the end. Messi did not disappoint and was the game's outstanding player, involved heavily from the off. The former Barcelona great clipped a dipping ball in behind for veteran striker Luis Suarez, who could only prod it at the goalkeeper and had strayed offside in any case. Porto took the lead in the eighth minute after being awarded a soft penalty after a VAR review, as Miami defender Noah Allen made light contact with Joao Mario in the box. Spain international Samu Aghehowa beat Oscar Ustari, who had saved a penalty in the goalless draw against Al Ahly, even though the stopper got a hand to his low effort. Uruguayan striker Suarez, 38, might have levelled after Messi threaded him through on goal but, forced to use his weaker left foot, Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos denied him. Javier Mascherano's side almost levelled through US international Benjamin Cremaschi after a charge forward from Suarez broke open Porto's defence, but Ramos made a smart near post stop to thwart him. Maximiliano Falcon brilliantly headed off his own goal-line with Ustari beaten by Rodrigo Mora's effort to keep Inter Miami hopes alive. Ustari denied Aghehowa and then scrambled the ball to safety as it rolled towards his net after Alan Varela crashed a shot off the upright and it hit him on the back, as Porto turned the screw before the break. Miami comeback Inter Miami levelled right at the start of the second half, with Segovia blasting home Marcelo Weigandt's inviting cut-back to stun the Portuguese side. Messi then sent Miami ahead with a goal all of his own making after 54 minutes. The playmaker was brought down outside the area and dusted himself down before arrowing a classic Messi free-kick into the top right corner. Miami battled hard to keep Porto at bay and groans travelled around the stadium after seven minutes of stoppage time was announced. Mascherano's players thew themselves in the way of shots in a way the former Argentine defensive midfielder would have done himself, and Inter Miami were eventually able to claim their much-craved victory.
