Ranchi: Gleaming new flyovers, built to ease urban congestion, are being defaced by the citizens. The Siramtoli and Kantatoli flyovers, two of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Ranchi, are now facing an unexpected challenge; rampant public misuse.
From empty beer bottles tossed into corners to paan stains splattered across railings, the new structures are fast turning into open-air bars and dumping grounds.
"These flyovers were supposed to be city's landmarks. What kind of message are we sending if we can't keep them clean for even a few weeks? This isn't about the govt, this is about us as people," said Mukesh Tiwari, a city resident and a daily commuter.
The 2.34-km Siramtoli flyover was inaugurated on June 5 to reduce travel time in central Ranchi.
Similarly, the Kantatoli flyover, inaugurated in October last year to ease traffic snarls near the Kantatoli Chowk. "There are broken beer bottles every morning on both Siramtoli and Kantatoli flyovers. People drink on them at night, spit paan from their bikes, throw plastic wrappers," said Arun Dey, a shopkeeper near Kantatoli flyover.
Ranchi Municipal Corporation's (RMC) deputy municipal commissioner Ravindra Kumar said, "We will begin by cleaning the flyover.

We appeal to the public to refrain from polluting or defacing public infrastructure. There is a provision in place to impose fines on individuals captured on camera littering the surroundings."
Sunil Kumar, secretary of the road construction department acknowledged the problem. "We will get the flyovers cleaned and ask RMC to ensure regular maintenance. But this is a behavioural problem. People must understand that these flyovers are for their benefit, not dumping grounds," he told TOI.

Air India crash: Crew member Irfan Shaikh laid to rest in Pimpri Chinchwad after DNA match; emotional farewell as family recalls his aviation dreams

NEW DELHI: The remains of Irfan Shaikh , a 22-year-old crew member of the ill-fated Air India flight AI 171, were laid to rest at Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra on Saturday after an emotional farewell by relatives and friends. Shaikh was among the 241 passengers who died when the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a building at a medical college complex in Ahmedabad on June 21. The Shaikh family received Irfan's remains following a DNA match on Friday, which were then transported to Pune in the early hours of Saturday. The final rites took place at a graveyard in Nehru Nagar, attended by family members, neighbors, friends, and political leaders from various parties. The crash, which occurred moments after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, also claimed the lives of 29 people on the ground. "Irfan joined the aviation industry as a cabin crew member two years ago after completing a course. He initially worked with Vistara, and after the Air India-Vistara merger, he began flying on international routes," a relative said. A family member shared that the young crew member had aspirations to excel in the aviation field, but the tragic crash cut short his dreams.

Joy Turns Into Grief: Soon-To-Be-Parents Were On Doomed London Flight

Vaibhav Patel (29) and Jinal Goswami (27) were soon going to be parents to their first child. Jinal was seven months pregnant, and the final couple of months were nothing less than a mix of excitement and anxiety. The couple's families also couldn't wait to celebrate and welcome a new member onboard. There was a strong urge to prepare the nest for the little one's arrival. On June 2, they celebrated Jinal's baby shower with a traditional ceremony and intimate gathering. But their joy soon turned into grief. On Monday, Vaibhav and Jinal were cremated amid hue and cry. The couple were among the 274 victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. They belonged to Keliya Vasna village of Dholka tehsil but lived in London and even recently moved to Southampton in Hampshire. They had travelled to Ahmedabad for Jinal's baby shower and were scheduled to return to London via flight AI 171 that ultimately crashed minutes after take-off. Friends and relatives close to the two families said a baby shower was held for Jinal on June 2, with a traditional ceremony and an intimate gathering, comprising close friends and relatives. The anxious long days of never ending wait was soon to be over. The couple's close friend Nirav Patel told the BBC that they were very happy and excited for the birth of their first child. "Vaibhav did not have a father, so he was the big son supporting the family back in India," he said. "He had rung me two days before the flight to tell me he was coming home. We were very good friends and had so much fun together... many trips around India, like to Goa or Rajasthan. This is a massive loss," he added. Only an idol of Lord Krishna, which friends and families claimed was held by Jinal at the time of the flight, has so far been recovered from the crash site. There were 242 people - 230 passengers, two pilots and 10 crew members - onboard the aircraft that crashed into a medical college seconds after taking off for London Gatwick Airport from Ahmedabad. Of these, only one - an Indian-origin British national - survived the crash. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Several people on the ground were also killed in the incident.
