SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) — A $2 million infrastructure improvement grant has been awarded to Sharon Regional Medical Center.
Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) made the announcement on Friday. The grant is being awarded through the Commonwealth's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).
'This funding for Sharon Regional demonstrates the commitment at the state level to ensure additional quality healthcare remains sustainable and available to the residents of Sharon and surrounding region,' Brooks said in a news release. 'The successful reopening of Sharon Regional Medical Center has been a critical victory for increased capacity, and the overall health and safety of our community; in addition, the investment of these funds will continue the established commitment from local and state leaders to help the hospital grow and thrive.'
The release said a minimum of $500,000 will be for enhancements to the hospital's catheterization laboratory, and the remaining funds will be to enhance the hospital's physical plant. Medical Properties Trust, the company Sharon Regional leases the hospital's property from, is also working on projects such as replacing the hospital's roof.
'These infrastructure upgrades are an important step forward for Sharon Regional,' said Butch Eavenson, interim CEO of Sharon Regional, in the release. 'They lay the foundation for consistent, high-quality care and reflect the commitment of those working hard to restore essential services in our community.'
Patient care services will continue during construction. Timelines for construction are still being finalized.
'The work underway at Sharon Regional is focused on creating a strong and sustainable foundation for care delivery,' said Radha Savitala, founder of Tenor Health Foundation. 'Investing in the facility is a critical part of ensuring patients can rely on the care they need, close to home.'
The RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.

Children's cough syrup recalled over bacteria concerns

(WKBN) – The presence of a bacterium that can cause two types of foodborne illnesses has prompted the recall of multiple lots of a children's cough syrup, a notice posted to the Food and Drug Administration's website announced this week. Medtech Products Inc. is recalling five lots of Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup due to the presence of Bacillus cereus, as well as the 'loss of shelf-stability,' the company explained. The recalled products were distributed nationwide. They were sold 4-ounce bottles, both in stores and online, between Dec. 14, 2022, and June 4, 2025. Identifying information, including the UPC and lot numbers, as well as the expiration dates, can be found below: No other Little Remedies products were included in the recall. While no serious adverse events have been reported in connection to the cough syrup, the FDA warns that Bacillus cereus can cause short-term illness and, in some cases, lead to death. Bacillus cereus, or B. cereus, is a spore-forming bacterium that commonly exists in our environment, the Cleveland Clinic explains. Exposure to the toxin it creates can result in one of two types of illness — one described as a diarrheal syndrome and another as a vomiting syndrome. The first is characterized by cramps and watery diarrhea, while the second more commonly causes nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, Bacillus cereus infection can lead to death. Those who believe they may be suffering from an illness caused by Bacillus cereus are urged to contact a healthcare provider. Customers who purchased the recalled Little Remedies cough syrup are being told to discard the product. Those with questions or refund requests can reach Medtech at 1-800-754-8853, by email at medicalaffairs@ or through the company's website.

Reasons why companies are choosing Pennsylvania

expand PA DCED Pennsylvania is powering a new era of business growth — one defined by innovation, speed and opportunity. From cutting-edge startups to global manufacturers and data powerhouses, companies aren't choosing Pennsylvania for its industrial past — they're choosing it for the momentum it's building right now. With bold investments in infrastructure, a business-friendly tax structure and a pro-growth mindset, the Commonwealth is setting a new standard for what it means to compete in today's economy. Whether you're scaling up, starting fresh or seeking a more strategic home base, Pennsylvania delivers the space, talent, connectivity and cost advantages to make your next move your smartest yet. Here are five reasons why businesses are saying yes to the Keystone State. Available sites One of the biggest roadblocks to business expansion? A lack of development-ready land. Pennsylvania knows it — and is taking action. Across the Commonwealth, creating shovel-ready sites has become a top priority as the state ramps up its efforts to attract major investment projects. The new PA SITES program is a game-changing initiative designed to accelerate site readiness. Communities throughout the Commonwealth now have the opportunity to apply for grant funding for infrastructure and other improvements at proposed industrial and commercial sites. When competing for projects, speed to market is everything. Businesses don't just want ready-to-build sites — they need them. With PA SITES, Pennsylvania is stepping up to meet that demand and giving regions across the state the tools to compete. A prime location When it comes to doing business, Pennsylvania is perfectly placed. Situated in the Northeast corridor and at the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, the Commonwealth provides immediate access to customers and suppliers along the East Coast. Nearly 40% of the U.S. population — and 60% of Canadians — are within a day's drive. But proximity to major markets is just the beginning — Pennsylvania keeps business moving. With more than 120,000 miles of roadways and a robust rail network, companies can move products quickly and efficiently to key markets. Six international airports connect people and cargo to virtually every business hub around the globe. And with three strategic ports — in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Erie — Pennsylvania offers unmatched shipping flexibility. It's the only state in the Northeast with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes, making it a true powerhouse for commerce and connectivity. Next-gen talent A state's economic success depends on its workforce — and Pennsylvania's is among the nation's best. With more than 6.5 million workers and nearly 300 higher education institutions fueling the talent pipeline, the Commonwealth is a magnet for top-tier talent. From Ivy League universities and cutting-edge research centers to nationally ranked trade and technical schools, Pennsylvania offers one of the most diverse and educated labor pools in the country. This talent ecosystem powers industries ranging from advanced manufacturing and life sciences to robotics, tech and agriculture. Whether you're innovating, scaling or competing globally, Pennsylvania's workforce delivers the skills and expertise businesses need to thrive. Cost of doing business In Pennsylvania, growth comes with fewer barriers and a smarter bottom line. The Commonwealth gives companies a competitive edge through lower tax rates, streamlined permitting and cost advantages that make expansion more accessible. By 2031, Pennsylvania's corporate net income tax will drop to 4.99% — lower than all neighboring states with a corporate income tax, where rates currently range from 6.5% (West Virginia) to a steep 11.5% (New Jersey). Add to that the PA Fast Track Permit Program — the first of its kind in the nation — which helps businesses cut through red tape and move from planning to groundbreaking faster.* And with no tax on machinery, equipment or inventory, Pennsylvania removes critical barriers to capital investment, making it easier and more cost-effective to build, expand and compete. Quality of life In Pennsylvania, life doesn't stop when the workday ends — it gets even better. Consistently ranked among the top states for quality of life, the Commonwealth offers the perfect mix of affordability, adventure and access. Whether you're drawn to the energy of big cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the charm of walkable small towns, or the peace of tree-lined suburbs, this is a place where careers thrive — and families do too. Love the outdoors? Each season brings its own adventure — hiking, kayaking, fishing, skiing and more. Prefer the arts? Discover world-class museums, live music and award-winning theaters across the state. From historic landmarks to big-league sports and vibrant college towns, there's always something to experience. Pennsylvania means business. With shovel-ready sites, a strategic location, a skilled and diverse workforce, vibrant communities, and a business climate built for growth, the Commonwealth checks every box for companies looking to expand, invest, and win. It's no surprise more and more companies are choosing Pennsylvania. * According to Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development
