Having trouble keeping up with all the new establishments popping up? Here are some noteworthy restaurants opening around Miami this June.
Located inside the Orcidea Hotel, Donatella offers classic Italian fare such as polipo al Insalata, carpaccio gambero rosso, rigatoni nduja, and black truffle cacio e pepe. Dishes are made with fresh ingredients and feature artisanal pastas.
The Empanadas, founded in Key Biscayne, opened its sixth location in South Miami. Choose from 25 different empanadas ranging from standards like beef and chicken to sweet varieties filled with apple pie or Nutella and brownie. There are also vegan choices, so everyone can enjoy empanadas.
Celebrity chef and humanitarian, José Andrés, opened Aguasal and Bar Centro at the Andaz Miami Beach Hotel. Aguasal, named for agua salada, the Spanish term for saltwater, is a restaurant celebrating coastal Mediterranean fare. Dishes include mussels saganaki with feta and chives; roasted cauliflower with tahini, sesame seeds, ground coriander, pomegranate, and puffed quinoa; and a whole snapper. Fans of chef Andrés will be familiar with Bar Centro, an indoor-outdoor bar with ocean views. Enjoy a key lime pie daiquiri and snack on Spanish tapas and sandwiches.
Macchialina's Michael Pirolo, along with managing partners Jennifer Chaefsky and Jacqueline Pirolo, have opened Fluke, a combination cocktail lounge and seafood spot inside the former Macchialina space. As the name implies, martinis are the house drink, paired with seafood selections from a rotating menu of raw and fried items and crudos. There's also a great burger, rosemary-dusted, hand-cut fries, and a selection of natural, biodynamic wines. Stop in for the Lucky $7 Martini Happy Hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring a selection of martinis for seven bucks.
Francesco, a Coral Gables favorite for Peruvian cuisine, has reopened after a seven-year hiatus. The restaurant, which attracted celebrities such as Gloria Estefan and Pitbull, recently reopened at a new location on Miracle Mile. Dishes include a cannelloni stuffed with chicken stew, a New York strip with gnocchi, and a catch of the day. If you're seeking romance, 'Wednesdate' nights offer live music, starting at 7 p.m.
Located inside a former Lutheran church, Jay's may be one of Fort Lauderdale's most unique venues. With stained glass windows, arched windows, and vaulted ceilings, you might just exclaim, 'holy cow' (pun intended) when your steak arrives. St. Augustine's Odd Birds Cocktail Lounge and Kitchen pops up in Little Havana for an open-ended run inside Pocho's Express. Can you bring your dog to the mall? Here's what the rules say in South Florida
One of South Florida's biggest malls is a big fan of your dogs. Aventura Mall, ranked as the most popular mall in the country, not only welcomes dogs to stroll with their humans, it even offers two dog parks. 'The guest is at the heart of the experience, and that means their best friends, too.' mall management said in a statement to the Miami Herald. The mall, at Northeast 195th Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Northeast Miami-Dade, features dog hydration stations, pet relief areas, dog-friendly patios, and of course those pet parks. David Moskowitz, owner of Broward Bark, a local newsletter for pet owners, said businesses benefit when they're pet-friendly. 'Being able to bring them along to pet-friendly places makes errands fun,' he said. 'It also benefits retailers. Shoppers tend to stay longer since they're not rushing home to let their dogs out, by visiting more stores.' The dog rules at the mall Despite the welcoming atmosphere, there are still dog rules at Aventura Mall. And those rules listed on signs. Dogs must be accompanied by a human 18 or older. They have to stay on a leash or in a stroller. Their humans must clean up accidents. And the animals have to stay away from fountains and off the escalators. Dogs generally aren't allowed in restaurants and some stores might not be as dog-friendly as the mall in general, so check before you enter those areas with your pooch. At least one dog was spotted in the new Eataly on Thursday, but not in any of the Italian market's restaurants. Even though dogs are welcome to window shop, the mall doesn't extend the same hospitality to your pet bird or reptile, according to the rules. Do other South Florida malls allow dogs? Other malls in South Florida aren't as transparent when it comes to dogs. Simon-owner Dadeland and Miami International Mall declined to comment on their policies. The only Simon Malls property that allows dogs, as mentioned by several pet-friendly location trackers, is the outdoor Falls in Kendall. According to Pet-Friendly Travel, the mall features a 'dog comfort station' at guest services and allows dogs small enough to fit in a stroller, carrier, or held by the owner during the visit. Though the shopping center features various places to walk around, they aren't considered a 'dog-walking' friendly location. The Shops at Merrick Park, an open-air complex in Coral Gables, also allows dogs in accepting stores, common areas and public spaces. What you should know about bringing your dog to businesses? The best advice is to check with a business before bringing your dog inside. Some stores have different policies and don't always throw down the welcome mat for your pup. At the popular Miromar Outlets mall off Interstate 75 north of Naples, the outdoor center allows dogs, and individual stores post signs in their windows if canines are welcome inside. Under Florida law, restaurants generally don't allow dogs, but service animals are always allowed inside. And last year, Publix made it clear that dogs other than official service dogs, aren't welcome inside the supermarket. Florida's largest grocery store chain posted signs outside and the lobby to hammer home that point.

Cyprus' lyrical duelists spit fierce rhymes as they battle it out to the licks of a fiddle
LARNACA, Cyprus -- Lyrical duelists in Cyprus spit rhymes in head-to-head contests, keeping alive a tradition known as 'tsiattista' that emerged centuries before the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Konstantinos Christou Grilias and Adamos Peratikos are among a new group of poets in this Mediterranean country who battle it out live on stage to the rhythms of the lute and fiddle. The battles are fierce, but you won't find any Kendrick-Drake style beef. Tsiattista made UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. The similarities with American hip-hop diss songs and battle rap are many: two duelists using their wits and turns of phrase to boast how superior they are, giving opponents a schooling in an onslaught of lyrical beatdowns. It's complete with assertive gestures and the hands-behind-the-back patience of the poet waiting to pounce. 'Even if you'd been a paramedic, I'd send you to hospital with a heart attack,' Peratikos told one adversary — a line with more snap in the Cypriot Greek dialect, whose syntax is akin to ancient Greek. Grilias dissed his opponent as a lightweight and a laughingstock. The audience of hundreds along a seaside promenade murmured in approval. Tsiattista battles which have been around since at least the end of the 19th century, are undergoing a bit of a revival, thanks to performers like Grilias and Peratikos. 'We urge other kids who like it to come along to safeguard this institution,' said Peratikos, 41. 'The goal isn't about awards, the goal is to keep tradition alive.' The 44-year-old Grilias said he's never really delved into the world of Kendrick Lamar or Jay-Z. 'Honestly, I've never listened to rappers. They told me that they battle in their own language, in their own way,' Grilias said as he prepared for a tsiattista duel at the peak of a festival for the Orthodox Christian Pentecost. 'Rappers don't know where Cyprus is," he added. The new group of performers, known as tsiattistaes, started to replace the older generation about 15 years ago at the premier competition in Larnaca during the annual Pentecost festival known as Kataklysmos, said ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou, who is director of the island nation's Music Archive. The new generation includes women, though few participate because of lingering social exclusion, Demetriou said. The current tsiattista format of a two-verse rhyme with a total of 15 syllables was developed in the late 18th to early 19th century, evolving from the introduction of the rhyming verse to the Greek-speaking world in the 15th and 16th centuries, Demetriou said. It draws on a tradition of poets matching wits from the times of Pericles in ancient Greece. The structure and musical accompaniment are simple, so that the rhymes are clear and understandable for both the audience and the adversary. Contests can address a range of themes, but the underlying premise is to determine who's the best at the diss. 'It's usually a fight, meaning 'I'd clobber you, kill you, bury you,' Grilias said. 'But I believe the public likes more a bit of humor, too.' For contestants, it's about who shows up ready, can stay cool and make the fewest mistakes in front of a crowd. 'Truth is, you're stressed, you're under pressure," Grilias said, and 'the person who can best handle this has the advantage.' One useful strategy is guessing how to get into your opponent's way of thinking, predicting possible responses to your lines, Peratikos said. He dismissed AI technology as incapable of coming up with effective rhymes in the Cypriot Greek dialect. 'There are words that we've heard but we don't even know, so there's no way artificial intelligence does,' Peratikos said. At the end of a long night of battling, Grilias and Peratikos finished fourth and fifth, respectively. A judging panel composed of men and women determined the winners. The two contestants took their places in stride. 'We're all friends, that's what's important,' Grilias said.
