Kyren Lacy Died Days Before His Grand Jury Hearing for Hit-and-Run: What to Know About Legal Case

Yahoo14-04-2025

2025 NFL Draft hopeful Kyren Lacy died days before a grand jury was set to begin arguments over his alleged hit-and-run case.
News of Lacy's death was confirmed by local Louisiana outlet WAFB 9 just one day before the hearing was scheduled to begin on April 14, 2025.
The former Louisiana State University wide receiver was arrested in December 2024 and charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless driving after authorities presumed he was involved in a fatal car accident that killed one individual and injured others.
Lacy was released on bond two days before declaring for the NFL Draft. He had maintained his innocence in the legal case.

The Louisiana State Police alleged in December 2024 that Lacy was involved in a highway car crash that led to the death of an individual.
As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge,' a press release read. 'Traveling behind the pickup was a 2017 Kia Cadenza whose driver swerved left to avoid the oncoming Dodge Charger. As the Kia Cadenza took evasive action to avoid impact with the Dodge, it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento.'
At the time, Lacy's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, told ESPN in a statement that his client was 'fully cooperating with the authorities.'
Lacy turned himself into the police following the car accident and was arrested on charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless driving. He was released on a $151,000 bond — two days before declaring for the NFL Draft.

Lacy's lawyer claimed in a February 2025 statement that the athlete was not involved in the crash.
'On the day of the accident, Mr. Lacy was driving on a road with two lanes, one in each direction. While he briefly passed other vehicles, he safely reentered his lane without incident,' attorney Matthew Ory said. 'The collision that resulted in the death of [another driver] was not caused by Mr. Lacy's actions. The accident occurred directly in front of him when a second vehicle in the oncoming lane crossed the centerline and collided with [the] vehicle, in which he was a passenger.'
According to Ory, Lacy only 'cautiously went around the vehicles after passage was safe.'
'It is crucial to emphasize that Mr. Lacy did not cause or contribute to the crash. There was no suspicion of alcohol or drug use involved,' Ory added in his statement. 'Furthermore, contrary to some media reports, Mr. Lacy never 'returned' to the scene of the accident. … He did not believe he was at fault for the accident, and as such, he continued with his daily activities. Throughout his career, Mr. Lacy has been an exemplary community member and teammate. We ask that he not be judged prematurely, and we are confident that further investigation will show he acted within the bounds of the law.'
News broke one day before the grand jury hearing that Lacy had died at the age of 24. A cause of death has not yet been revealed.
'Rest easy lil bro 🕊,' NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. wrote via Instagram Stories on April 13, 2025, sharing a photo of the pair in a locker room.

Former Ohio State and NFL offensive lineman Kirk Barton has been charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree felony, following a fatal car crash on June 21 in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. Barton, 40, was allegedly speeding at the time of the early morning crash, which killed 24-year-old Ethan Wence Perry, according to a post on the City of Dublin's website. Police have not specified how fast they suspect Barton of driving at the time of the accident. On Wednesday morning, the former NFL star wrote on X, 'Cam Hayward is Magics son?' Brown was referring to Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson's son, EJ Johnson. Advertisement Cam Heyward caught wind of AB's joke and clapped back, 'Good thing you can't spell?! Let me know when you back in the states,' the All-Pro defensive tackle wrote on X. Brown is wanted in Miami-Dade County, Florida on a charge of attempted murder, according to court documents obtained by the Washington Post. Brown, 36, was allegedly involved in a shooting at a celebrity boxing event in May. He was initially detained by police immediately after the incident, but was released. The day after the incident, Brown said in a post on X that he was 'jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.' Advertisement Since the warrant was issued on June 11, the former NFL star has been traveling in the Middle East and remains overseas. He is not considered 'on the run, as Brown's trip began before the warrant was issued, according to the Miami Herald. The warrant calls for Antonio Brown to post a $10,000 bond and he will be subject to house arrest until the trial. Miami Police Chief Manny Morales on Monday afternoon told the Herald that detectives believe Brown is still in Dubai, have been in contact with his attorney and expect him to be taken into custody once he returns to South Florida. 'We're not going to be sending anybody there,' the chief said. Advertisement On Sunday, Brown claimed on X that he's been racially profiled by the media, fans and the NFL. 'How TF [the f—] You go from being victimized unto a attempt to murder you see they control the media,' Brown said in the post, which included a screenshot from ChatGPT. 'Took a month to change the narrative…' Two days after his warrant was issued, Brown posted a clip of him pedaling a two-wheeler, all with a huge smile on his face. The post was captioned, '#lovefromthemiddleeast.' Brown spent nine years with the Steelers from 2010-18 and then spent three more seasons in the NFL before quitting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers mid-game in 2021. He has been embroiled in numerous legal battles over the years, including sexual assault allegations, physical violence, failing to pay child support, and stiffing several vendors and contractors, including during his time as the owner of the Albany Empire indoor football team. After Years Behind Bars, Henry Ruggs Eyes NFL Comeback

PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 19: Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III (11) goes long for a touchdown reception during the game on September 19, 2021 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA. (Photo by Shelley Lipton/Icon Sportswire) Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III spoke publicly for one of the first times since the 2021 incident that led to his incarceration, expressing remorse and a desire to one day return to the NFL. Ruggs was granted special release privileges to appear at a 'Hope for Prisoners' event, where he reflected on the tragedy and his path forward. Advertisement 'Yes, I would love to [play again],' Ruggs said, via Bryan Horwath of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. 'I'm in this newfound spiritual space, and I'm confident in who I am and what I can do, so when the time comes, I'm sure I'll be ready.' On the night of Nov. 2, 2021, Ruggs was driving 156 mph when he rear-ended a Toyota RAV4, causing a fiery crash that killed 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her golden retriever, Max. His blood alcohol level was later revealed to be 0.161, more than twice Nevada's legal limit. The Raiders released Ruggs just hours after the incident. In August 2023, he was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. He is eligible for parole in August 2026 and has reportedly demonstrated good behavior during his incarceration, improving his chances of early release. If granted parole, Ruggs would be 27 years old, still young enough to realistically compete in the NFL. Former college and NFL teammate Josh Jacobs recently spoke about Ruggs during an appearance on The Pivot Podcast with Ryan Clark. Advertisement 'He's positive about everything. He's training. They let him train and things like that,' Jacobs said. 'I've been talking to some people for him. They've been saying a couple of teams are willing to give him a chance. I'm like, 'When you get that chance, man, you better not ever look back, and prove to yourself and prove to everybody that one decision doesn't define you and who you are as a man.'' Ruggs was selected No. 12 overall by the Raiders in the 2020 NFL Draft and appeared to be on the verge of a breakout second season, including a standout performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in which he recorded five catches for over 100 yards and a touchdown. Still, parole would only be the first step in Ruggs' long road back to the NFL. He would need to be reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and could still face league discipline. Any team that considers signing him would also face significant public backlash for taking a chance on a player responsible for a fatal DUI crash. There is precedent for players returning to the league after incarceration. Michael Vick served 18 months in federal prison for his involvement in a dogfighting operation but returned to play several more seasons, including a Pro Bowl campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles and a brief stint with the Steelers. 171110-N-VC599-106 NORFOLK (Nov. 10, 2017) Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, center, poses with referees during a flag football game held on board Naval Station Norfolk. Fox Sports coverage across the Veterans Day weekend provides the opportunity to showcase for the American people the professionalism and commitment of the men and women of the U.S. Navy. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Justin Wolpert/Released) Ruggs' case, however, involves the loss of human life, raising more complex questions about redemption and accountability. If he is released and proves to be in football shape, it is possible some teams will evaluate his potential. The former Alabama speedster ran a 4.27-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and still possesses elite athletic traits. Advertisement Whether he deserves another chance remains a deeply polarizing issue. But with teams reportedly monitoring his situation and August 2026 drawing closer, a Ruggs resurgence, even in a city like Pittsburgh, may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed.
