Springfield educators receive Excellence in Teaching awards
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Twenty-one Springfield Public Schools educators have been selected as recipients of the 2024 Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching awards, recognizing their outstanding contributions to students, schools, and the community.
The award winners will be celebrated during the Springfield School Committee meeting on April 10, and later at a regional banquet at the Log Cabin in Holyoke on May 13.
Six Holyoke educators awarded for excellence in teaching
The annual awards, presented by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation, honor educators across western Massachusetts who demonstrate dedication, innovation, and leadership in their schools. The initiative is supported locally by the Irene E. & George A. Davis Foundation, among other community partners.

Other perks include a WGBY membership, providing access to a wide range of digital educational resources, and a complimentary three-month membership to the Springfield Jewish Community Center or a regional YMCA.
The awards program, now a longstanding tradition in the district, is made possible through the support of several local organizations and sponsors, including American International College, Arrha Credit Union, Country Bank, and Meyers Brothers Kalicka.
'These educators are making a lasting difference in the lives of their students and the success of Springfield Public Schools,' Dinnall said. 'Their hard work and dedication continue to inspire us all.'

Springfield city officials announces more than $420K worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than $420,000 worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs in Springfield. 16 local summer programs in the city are to benefit from this funding. The Jewish Community Center will be part of hosting some of the summer programs. Officials like Mayor Domenic Sano and the Springfield Public Schools superiendent gathered there today to make the announcment. This funding was made possible through a multi-grant the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education gave to Springfield Empowerement Zone Partnership. Officials explain the importance behind providing these programs to hundreds of youth. 'Programs like this affords students who otherwise students and families who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to take advantage of these programs. It gives them access and that for us is a a powerful and and really moving way to support a community,' said Co-Executive Director for Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership, Matthew Brunell. Officials add the programs will also increase student engagement in the classroom and build core life skills. More than 5,000 middle and high school students across Springfield are to benefit from each of the programs. Springfield Family Expo provides student support resources
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Public Schools spent the day on Saturday celebrating the power of community. The third annual Family Expo was held by Springfield Public Schools inside the MassMutual Center. The second floor was filled with over 100 organizations, with live entertainment and artwork from the students in the district. Golf tournament raises funds for new veterans monument in Springfield This fun-filled event was to help families understand what resources are out there to support them, such as early literacy, middle school transition, college and career readiness, or post-secondary success. This year's theme, 'Believe in the Power of CommUNITY,' was inspired by the superintendent of Springfield Public Schools. 'It's believing in our students and the capabilities that they have, believing in our families, believing in our community,' said Assistant Superintendent Jose Escribano. 'And just the opportunity when all of us come together, we can accomplish great things. But we just have to believe that we can all come together to do that.' Every family also got the chance to complete exit surveys to give feedback about the event and the district. Those surveys led to raffle prizes like PlayStations and grills.
