Contractor, ex-wife jailed 34 years for maid's murder

KOTA KINABALU: A contractor and his now ex-wife were on Friday sentenced to 34 years' imprisonment each by the High Court here for murdering their domestic helper four years ago. Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos, 44, and Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 37, were found guilty and convicted by Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng of murdering Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, between 8 and 11 December 2021 at a unit in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue Condominium, Penampang.
Advertisement Ambree was also ordered to receive 12 strokes of the cane, while Etiqah was spared the whipping due to her gender. The court ordered the duo, who had been out on bail, to begin serving their prison sentences from the date of their conviction – Friday. His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed the development on Friday, stating Najib is relieved to have fewer cases weighing on him, particularly after multiple previous requests for a DNAA. The High Court allowed the DNAA application filed on June 11. The decision followed Najib's failed bid to have the charges dropped after the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation on July 31, 2023. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul had initially requested the court to set a new date for trial. However, Shafee again pressed for a DNAA, pointing out that the case had been ongoing since 2019 with over six years of delays. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Shafee clarified that the deputy public prosecutor cannot challenge the decision, as the prosecution retains the option to pursue the case again once they are prepared. 'Of course, we hope they do not, because this case has already prejudiced against Najib. So I hope the Attorney General will use his discretion and authority to close the case,' he said. Najib was charged on Feb 3, 2019, with receiving RM27 million from illegal proceeds through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014. The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which carries a maximum of five years in prison, a RM5 million fine, or both, upon conviction. Despite this discharge, Najib continues to serve his sentence at Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million from the same SRC International fund. He began serving his sentence on Aug 23, 2022. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, which were upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. However, a royal pardon petition filed on Sept 2, 2022, led to the Pardons Board reducing his sentence to six years and the fine to RM50 million.

Ex-Tronoh assemblyman's final appeal against his rape conviction and prison sentence to be heard on Aug 27

PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Court has fixed Aug 27 to hear former Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong Choo Kiong's (picture) appeal against his conviction and imprisonment for allegedly raping his maid. One of his lawyers, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, confirmed with Bernama the hearing date following a case management held today. Also representing Yong is lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh. Yong is appealing against the Court of Appeal's decision in upholding the decision of the High Court which convicted him for raping his 23-year-old Indonesian maid. The High Court, in July 2022, sentenced Yong to 13 years imprisonment, but the Court of Appeal in March, last year, reduced the sentence to eight years. He was alleged to have commited the offence in a room at his house in Ipoh, between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7, 2019. The Court of Appeal, in a 2-1 majority decision, dismissed Yong's appeal against his conviction but reduced his prison sentence to eight years, along with two strokes of the cane. The appellate court, however, granted a stay of execution, pending disposal of the appeal at the Federal Court and Yong was released on RM30,000 bail with one surety and ordered to surrender his passport to the court. In March this year, the High Court in Ipoh, Perak dismissed Yong's application to submit additional evidence in his appeal. A lawyer for the maid had testified in the High Court that the woman has withdrawn her rape allegations against Yong and she made the retraction through a statutory declaration affirmed in Indonesia. — BERNAMA
